I just changed the battery on my spectre. It's an older model than the one shown in this video. I've had it since about 2015 and the battery finally went out. And even though I love upgrading to new tech I just couldn't justify getting rid of the laptop because it works perfectly otherwise. Still very fast and no other issues to speak of. So I just ordered a battery from amazon for about 30 dollars and a small tool kit to help. I watched a different video to help with the process and it couldn't be any easier really. Don't be afraid to replace your batteries people! All these companies gor rid of the replaceable batteries to make you buy new products.

Dude…you’re a hero. I bent the hell out of my back panel because I didn’t know about the two screws under the rubber things. HP doesn’t even mentioned those. I even bought those suction cups because I had such a hard time. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for a great tutorial. My daughter's battery started dying too quickly within 2 years which surprised me, but now I know from your tutorial that it's common with this HP laptop! It's really disheartening being that it was such an expensive laptop!

Great video and very helpful. The screw driver type I used was a TORX T5 that I picked up at Ace Hdwr. I came across this video because my Spectre was constantly rebooting and not shutting off - apparently a not uncommon problem with this model. Some Owners had their motherboard replaced to solve the issue, but it turns out to be a rather straight forward fix involving disconnecting the battery and the CMOS lead (red and black twisted pair next to the battery) for a few minutes. This video clearly showed how to get there - and much more. Thank You!

Thanks so much for the video. You are a good instructor. The battery on my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-choo8ca - purchased in 2017 - will no longer hold a charge. In fact, I fully charge it and shut it down. Next time I turn it on it is almost out of power. Can't believe it drains when I am not even using it. My problem with taking the cover off is that there are only two tiny screws that I can find. I took those out but the back seems to stuck somewhere in the middle and I don't want to force it. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM? Gave you a like but not interested in motorcycles. I am 78 years old but if I was younger I would be interested in bikes.Thank you.

Are there any plastic pads or rubber feet on the bottom panel? There may be some screws hidden beneath. In this video of my laptop, there are also some little feet with screws underneath that I show. The feet are stuck on with a double side of tape, so they can be peeled off and stuck back on a few times. If the cover is stuck directly in the middle it's possible, although I'm not certain, that there is something sticky like a double sided tape or some type of padding or material that transfers heat. I don't know specifics about your model laptop, so I'm just thinking out loud and giving you a couple ideas of things to look at or consider. I hope you figure it out!

Thank you man. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get my back cover off. My HP Spectre 15.6" x360 is slightly different. It has a long sticky strip underneath the back rubber foot that stretches from one side to the other. Now, I had the back rubber feet removed but didn't realize there were screws hiding underneath a black strip. I actually thought that it was part of the back casing. But the fact that you stated there are screws in the back prompted me to investigate further. Also, same issue with the battery. Oh yeah, and screen reliability (cracks with normal where and tear). Very tempted to avoid HP next laptop. Family has had 4/5 lemons with HP. That doesn't speak well to them. Edit:: apparently there's two screws underneath the front strip as well for me

I just replaced the swollen battery on my Spectre following your video. Newegg was out of stock of the battery but I was able to find the exact same HP battery on on Amazon. The only difference was that the “HP” logo was covered with black tape and a BOWEIRUI sticker was placed on the battery. The battery cost $48.96. Thanks! (Edit: Oh, and once I replaced the battery the trackpad went back to its normal position and the left-click function is restored. Also, this manufacturer said to discharge their battery no lower than 3% when doing the initial cycling)

Although the original battery in my 5 year old HP Spectre X360 is still going strong, I'm glad I found this video. I'll probably order one to keep on the shelf just in case mine finally bites the dust. Knock on wood I haven't noticed any significant drop-off in battery run time yet with my Spectre. The only thing I've replaced is the 512GB SSD with a 1TB SSD. I'm about to replace that one with a 2TB because I use this laptop for so many different things/projects and need the storage space. BTW: Newegg apparently no longer carries this battery. The least the link in this video brings up a product that no longer exists.

There are 8 screws securing the back cover of the HP SPECTRE 360 15". 2 on plain view in the middle of the left and right sides. 4 are under a plastic strip along the top side where the hinges are. You'll see this strip neatly concealed after removing the rubber legs. The bottom strip conceals 2 screws. You only need to lift the strips as fast as is necessary to remove the screws.

Wonderful video! Thanks for posting this. I've been frustrated with my Spectre 360 since I bought it about 4 years ago (the battery stopped charging fully almost immediately), but even more so with HP's awful "customer service" (where that term is used generously). Anyway, I really appreciate your thoughtful discussion, and the numerous tips. HP told me to buy "856" battery (which I did today, from Amazon), but now (after watching your video) I wish I had taken the back off before I ordered (it's probably an "855"). Thanks again!

Make sure you UNPLUG your power source before removing the laptop cover or doing any work inside it!!! It took me 2 days on my own just to learn everything you mentioned here, including HP not selling the battery part and which numbers to look for when searching online (your Spectre's specific model number is on the backside of the laptop - use that model number to help you match up the generic part number for the matching batteries for sale). I ended up buying a battery on Amazon - check the customer reviews not just on the item page but on the seller's storefront page where it shows percentage of positive vs. negative reviews of the company itself. You can also see the address of the seller on there which helps. I also ordered a toolkit that contains the *T6 and +1.5 bits because those were pictured with some of the batteries for sale for the Spectre. Lastly, my particular generic battery part number comes in two shapes, and many of the sellers called attention to that so you don't buy the wrong one.

Great video but beware this may not go as smoothly as shown here. In my case all screws were very difficult to remove - a real fight - one corner screw would just just not remove, so I had to rotate the bottom case backward and forward until it pulled clear of the screw. Once I got the case bottom off and the screw was revealed I managed to remove it with pliers and a hacksaw. Otherwise the new battery worked well.

I did upgrade the ram. You can go up to 32GB. In this video, in the description, you'll find a link to the specific ram that I used. If it didn't work for you it may be because you need to update the laptops driver files. You can find those on the HP website. So basically, get the laptop fully up-to-date, shut it down, and then plug in the new ram.

@jmatley
@jmatley 3 жыл бұрын
Hope the videos helps. I don't exactly show the removal process. The panel just pops up once all the screws are out. I just upgraded my memory this morning and found that prying under the corner with your fingernail, credit card, or something thin and stiff will do the trick. I wouldn't use anything metal. Don't want to risk scratches. Flex the laptop a little and you'll see the panel want to pop out. It's better to first pop the rounded corner up because that is a more rigid area. Less chance of bending anything. After that the whole thing will come out easy. The back edge has some little tabs, so you'll have to angle the panel up and then pull it away. And when putting the panel back on, place the back edge in first, making sure the little tabs are under the surrounding frame of the computer. Good luck with the speakers. I had some strange crackle and silence issues. Turned out to be removing and/or updating some software did the fix. They started working again after I uninstalled my Samsung Galaxy phone USB drivers, and installed the updated drivers. Might have been the issue... might have been coincidence.

@Justin Matley - I'm currently trying to upgrade the hard drive and memory for my hp spectre 15-bl012dx. First time ever doing in a laptop. How do I make these upgrade without losing data/memory?
@jmatley
@jmatley 4 жыл бұрын
You'll need a new SSD, a portable SSD adapter/encloser/housing with the correct USB cord, and software such as Macrium Reflect ( www.macrium.com/reflectfree ) that will copy your entire harddrive to the new drive/adapter connected via USB. Run the software. Pretty easy stuff, and you look up settings if you're not sure of something. When finished, you can replace your old drive with the new one and it should work. If it didn't work, you just put your old drive back in. No harm. Sometimes there's a step involved to ensure that your computer recognizes the new drive properly. I don't know this by heart. I think it has something to do with BIOS settings or installing the driver for the SSD. But like I said, it's possible your machine will fire up with that new drive. Sometimes the SSDs will come with software and good instructions for doing this sort of thing. As for the memory, you just pop out the old memory and put in the new memory, then boot your machine up. Piece of cake.

Great vid, thanks. Just ordered the needed battery. Question, since you're well versed in the innards of this thing. My touchpad has become unseated from the frame it rests in, and the edge closest to the front edge of the laptop sticks up, perhaps a quarter inch above the lip of the area it is supposed to be seated in. When I go to replace the battery, will I be able to correct that? Any tips on what I'll find when I go to do that?

I've had that issue as well. My left speaker would go out and sound buzzy. Not sure if that is the same issue you're facing. It was like that for at least a year or more until recently. My Samsung Galaxy S9 phone failed an update and crashed. I had to manually flash the phone with the latest Samsung/Android software. In doing so I had to install software on my laptop called ODIN, and also update the Samsung Kies Phone/USB drivers... and I believe the laptop sound is all fixed. This just happened like 2 weeks ago, but it seems the speakers are working better now. I can only assume it was the Kies driver/software update. Do you also have a Samsung Galaxy phone? If we solve this problem a TON of people are going to be happy.

Hi Justin. Greetings from Indonesia...!!! Thanks for the video - it certainly helped me when replacing the battery in my HP Spectre X360 13". I ordered the battery from Battpitt and installed. After some teething issues (had to update the BIOS and then the battery drivers in Windows 10) it is finally working. Have calibrated the new battery using the BIOS calibration tool and now having some issues with battery life - the original battery was giving me 6 - 7 hours when new BUT this Battpit battery is only giving about half that (no more than 4 hours with normal usage). Just wondering if you found any similar issue with your battery or if you are getting the "as new" battery life? BTW when updating the Windows 10 battery drivers (because Windows was not recognising 100% charge - it stopped charging at below 60%) you need to fully shut down the laptop, disconnect the power, open it up and unplug the battery and then hold the power button down for at least 30 seconds to drain all power. This helped me getting Windows to recognise the battery charge 0 to 100%. Anyway, thanks again for the video and best regards.

Wow, I'm so glad the video helped. And thanks for writing! It is possible my laptop also doesn't run as long as the "claimmed" original specs, but with my larger screen and often running many resource heavy programs, that is to be expected. I haven't timed it, but I think I'm able to work most the morning and then plug in around noon. So maybe I'm also falling in the 4+ hour range. I'll pay attention and report back. Regarding bios, I was fortunate to not have that issue. I just followed the battery manufacturer's instructions for install, and allowed the laptop to fully die and shut down on its own which helps it understand when the battery was dead and thus how many amp hours to pump back in for a full charge. So far so good.

@@jmatley Hi Justin. Yes, I ran the battery calibration 3 times using the BIOS battery calibration app which is the HP recommended method. Right now I am getting around 4 hours, up to 5 hours if I don't run any graphic intensive programs. The battery I replaced was down to about 3 - 4 hours (from original 6 - 7 hours) which was the reason I decided to replace it so will keep the old battery in case I have any issues with short life with the Battpit unit. Next time I visit HP here in Jakarta I will ask them about this and why on earth I cannot buy a HP genuine replacement battery (when I checked before buying the Battpit unit I found, as you did, they don't carry them).

Yes, I upgraded the memory to 32GB. I didn't find a lot of different memory options. The one I used is linked in the description of this video. This is an affiliate link, but it is the exact memory that I've been using in my laptop for 4 or more years. Just be sure that your laptop's bios is up-to-date before plugging in the new memory. You can download the BIOS on the HP website. When you run the BIOS update file it will allow you to backup your current BIOS on a thumb drive just to be sure you don't have any problems. So create the backup first. Then run the BIOS update. Then with the laptop shutdown of course, plug in the new memory and you are good to go. I haven't had any issues with the memory upgrade.

I've been happy with the replacement battery. As for the new drive, I used Macrium Reflect (free) to copy my old drive entirely to the new drive. I put the new drive in an adapter/enclosure, and connected it via USB to make this all happen. I later put the old SSD into the adapter so that I had a nice 500GB portable drive. I have HP Spectre 360 convertible with swelling battery, I just stopped by a repair place that said it would be a week without my pc hahaa I wont make any money to feed myself without my computer 🙃 While I was there they said there is a risk that when they disconnect the battery it could wipeout the whole computer 🤯 I had considered doing the battery replacement myself until I heard that. What are the chances of that happening 🤔 also are there ways to prevent that your tutorial looks pretty straightforward. I have the model without the sticky feet in corners and have the one with 2 long rubber strips.
@jmatley
@jmatley 2 жыл бұрын
You're not going to wipeout the computer. Well, not unless you spill your sweet tea all over the insides while making the repair. 😄 The different model doesn't change anything. Just unplug the old battery, plug the new one in, plug the computer in to let it charge. Allow it to fully charge before starting it. If you don't see your charge light come on you'll either have to start the machine and then shut down, or do a reset to get the computer to understand it should start fresh with regard to the batter level and whatnot. Usually this is done by holding the power button for 10 seconds of so. Not sure about your exact model. What model do you have? What's the exact model number?

Shoot, you could do it both ways to be sure. Just so you know, the Tom's Hardware article has a warning. I just wants you to know that doing this reset does not affect your harddrive, Windows, or other programs, files and settings on your computer. Only what's in memory, like if you had software or files open and the computer was in hibernate mode. But if you weren't working on anything, you won't lose anything. It appears this is your battery: amzn.to/3byywQX (affiliate link) There are others that are cheaper, but this one comes with the tools and a little wedge tool to pry up the feet and back panel of the laptop.
