The Last Kumite has wrapped! I'm travelling home today, so there won't be a new episode as usual. But in honor of Kurt McKinney, who is in The Last Kumite and is a GREAT guy, we're re-releasing No Retreat No Surrender. This was copyright claimed a long time ago, but fortunately, we only had to make a few changes to make things right.

@ghost7524 Жыл бұрын
I laughed so hard at how the excitement level went up when Bruce Lee's ghost walked in🤣 I was waiting for that when y'all guessed it right. Corey Yuen, who had directed and choreographed lots of movies is also famous being being in the group that includes Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan who went to the same Peking Opera school. Corey Yuen in an interview said that he admires and respects the original Karate Kid. How he directed No Retreat No Surrender is how he thought The Karate Kid should've gone. The plot of the movie. The European version does go into detail more than the American version. The mob guys want to form a fighting syndicate of karate schools, so they go after the good schools. They wanted to get Jason's father's school to I guess start up the California syndicate. Because Kelly's brother became champion, they wanted to start a syndicate in Seattle. Van Damme's character just happened to be the baddest martial artist working for the mob guys, not necessarily it being Russia against the USA> It was the mob putting up Van Damme as one man instead of them going with the 3-man team they originally had, to go against the Seattle team "and whoever else has the balls". While calling Bruce Lee "Sensei" would be technically correct as far as in the context of a teacher, the Chinese word for teacher is obviously different. It makes sense that the word Sensei would be used since it's a word that most likely any person who have an idea of what it means. While I like the European version because of the more detail, I like the American version more because of the music; totally different music especially in the training, fight and the disco scenes.

I forgot all about the Bruce Lee stuff. LOL. I saw this as a kid when there were only, like, four Van Damme movies and I just had to see them all. Gonna say I was 11 or 12, and this taught me what the difference between a bad movie and a good movie was. The only part I remembered was the first time the dude said "Ne retreat. No surrender," and even as a no-nothing kid, I was like "That's some stupid shit."

I just wish you guys would have watched the US cut. It's a little less ridiculous and it also has a scene taken out with him and the girlfriend on a date and they stop at the pet store and they're looking at the bunnies. So the whole scene at the birthday party makes sense, unlike the euro cut where you feel like you had a stroke and missed some scenes or something. I have seen this movie at least a hundred times over the years. This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, I'm 40 now and still love this movie just as much. It's just cheesy fun and definitely a S.B.I.G. BTW, I don't know if y'all have seen The Last Dragon. If not, I would love to hear your commentary on a So Bad It's Good CLASSIC!

This was also Jean-Claude Van Dammes first Lawsuit he had. He kicked Loren Avedon (the father of our hero) so many times full force in the throat with his jump kicks. They had to sacrifice a whole day and 3 stunt people and decided to not do any throat kicks and go to the chest instead. Good old Van Dame didn't stop there. Did you see how realistic Devon delivered the kicks in his face ? They tried multiple takes and took the one where Avedon could still stay after the beating. Jean-Claude never retreats, not even when there is nothing to fight for.

I hope your flight went smoothly. I've been lucky in my travels, as I've climitized and adjusted to time changes pretty easily. Hopefully you do too. I was introduced to this movie back in '07 by a friend in Chicago. We were out one night and my friend yelled out, "No retreat, no surrender!". I thought he was trying to quote "Never give up, never surrender!", from Galaxy Quest. We went home and watched this wonderful movie. Also, I've been to Bruce Lee's grave here in Seattle. The scenes reminded me that it's not alone now as Brandon's grave is right next to it. The two finger push ups were faked. Wires were used to pull him up.

I just realized something. The guy fighting Jean-Claude van Damme did the equivalent to a "Flash Kick," which just so happens to be a move that Guile, from Street Fighter 2, happens to use regularly. Of course JCvD would go on to play Guile in the hot garbage known as "Street Fighter: the Movie."
