Back in college, at the student union, I used to play as a team of Ken, Ryu and Akuma and I managed to do pretty well. I would pick all white gis for them and constantly use assists. It would sometimes confuse my opponent on which character was the "legal" fighter and which was doing the assist. And I would often do fun combos of Ken's hurricane kick assist into Ryu's hadouken super while the opponent was still in the air. Got a lot of compliments from that. If I really wanted to show off, I'd do a triple hurricane kick super: Ken's into Ryu's into Akuma's. Probably not the best use of supers but it was pretty to look at. Got a lot of oohs and aahs from that one. I'm sure I would have gotten wrecked from anyone competent (and I did lose sometimes to others on that particular machine), but it was fun times regardless.

I always felt that Ryu was still stuck in his Alpha gameplay while His fellow Street, Fighters adapted more to the MVC style. Starting with TVC, he began to play more like he’s in a versus game as opposed to a Street Fighter game.

Thing is though, in TvC, he got a lot of boons. *Better footspeed/walkspeed than expected *Universal air dash mechanics (can air dash from one jump/super jump, then air dash again from the double jump) which gave him far better mobility for approach *Because of using his Street Fighter 4 version as a base, he now has effective poking range for hit confirms via being grown-up from his Alpha/Zero incarnation *Roster was a bit tamed down despite still existing clear top tiers *As a result his assist was an amazing combo extender *The whole cast having linear-yet-solid-zig-zag magic series chain combos for their normals gave them great hit confirms Then MvC3 made him the way he used to be: no air dash, no double jump, slapped back in the broken Marvel characters and even nerfed his footspeed and made his magic series no longer zig-zag. Yeah, he's been through shit again, arguably low tier in those games once more. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom was the one game in both versions where he was even high-to-mid tier.

One other note about Shinku Hadoken: using it in the air causes it to have instant startup, like AHVB. This does help for some punishes here and there that you normally can't get, even if it's not nearly as potent. There are two reasons why this isn't as useful as AHVB: the first is that the beam has a travel time, so if the enemy isn't in your grill, they still have time to block. And B: unlike AHVB, this has a bunch of end lag, so you can't do any obscene follow-ups. Still, it's a nice little extra thing to note about this guy, who can use all the help he can get.

One weird thing I realized when messing around with low tier teams is that if you throw Ryu's hurricane kick in the middle of an air combo and all the kicks land, it will do MASSIVE damage for some reason. You can 100% a Strider or Bonerine with it. At least, this was true in the arcades. Not sure if they fixed it in the DC/emulator versions.

I think they should just add a new balance mode to a rerelease. That way you can have both the classic 'balance' and then a new more balanced mode. Maybe they can get Justin Wong and couple other folks to consult on that mode. Also they can build the ratio mod into the game. Just make it so when you select a mode you then choose normal match or ratio match.

No, Ryu is objectively terrible in this game. He has nothing at close range (points to combo-off-medium attempts) He has nothing at long range (except Shinku-Hadoken, and that's meter-dependent) He has no mobility at all The only characters he can move in to throw loop are arguably more dangerous (and damage) than him in said close range, without the range deficiency If not for Shinku-Hadoken, he would easily be a Ratio 1 character

Ryu may be classified as bad, but when I play him as part of a zoner team(usually with cable and either cyclops or iron man) I often use him as a point character and do well. He kinda a speedy boi, and shinku hadoken is pretty good.

Not sure where Ryu ranks in 1, but he is also at the bottom in Infinite. But Infinite is actually really well balanced so the only characters that seem truly weak are Chris, Hulk, Black Widow, Captain Marvel and Black Panther. Ryu has been placed probably lower than some of those characters on tier lists before, but I really doubt he is that bad. Anyway, Ryu is basically bottom in every Marvel vs Capcom at that point. I find it funny that so many supers in this game seem to be improved in damage by mashing. It is a fun game design element but also not that practical.

Ryu can beat everyone except Sentinel. But you have to train with him extensively to make full use of him. His combos are meant to be less hits, Jab, HP, Hadouken into Shinkuu Hadouken is devastating. Ryu forces you to understand damage scaling. His tatsu hits harder than the other shotos too, if you have an assist that grabs the opponent (Akuma tatsu assist) hit them with a Hardkick tatsu for three hits and look at the damage count. Don't like your positioning after an attack do a tatsu into super jump (same as air hyper viper beam only backwards with one kick) Watch him take off at a 45 degree angle backwards, great for escapes and positioning against storm/doom and can be canceled into shinkuu hadouken for a little extra surprise (practice the timing). Ryu's ground to air fireball (Air hyper viper motion with one punch) is an annoying wide projectile, throw multiple jab versions when appropriate. It also goes through/over storm's wind projectile and simultaneous blocking her from air dashing forward for rush down forcing her to go high making her predictable. Same deal with magneto till the player realizes magneto has a fireball too (Some players never do). Ryu has an answer for everyone but sentinel if you really think about it.

I've always been more of a Ken/Gōki player than Ryū in any given game just because I have more fun with combos than large single hits, and Ryū's never been big on combos; if I want what he tends to bring for me MvC2, I'll just play Cable or sidestep to a contact hyper like the Servbot horde or Weapon X or Final Justice or maybe Max Spider. But then I'm 100% garbage at assists, so probably I suck at this game despite it being my all-time fav fighter.

I loved playing Ryu as a low tier character but yes, he needs a lot of help from assist and usually has to be up close for his most damaging combos. Ken's tatsu assistant is a good link for Ryu Shinkuu Hado, as well as Cyclops Gene Splice, there's more but that's was what I like to do when I played MVC2 in the arcades.

he's not a combo character. he's a counter character. you have to be better than your opponent to play him, but when you are that is where he shines. he is all about single hit punishes. ryu isnt meant to be played like the rest... he's ryu.

I played Hayato for one reason, and that was to learn the new controls. You'll want to (arguably) learn his Plasma Combos (sequences that start with back + LP); and how to combo into qcb + KK super

If you land qcb + KK super (and he glows), then Hayato (not your team!) gets unlimited meter for 10 seconds. Abuse the other two for chip. He also has a Raging Demon equivalent (LP, LP, fwd, LK, HP in sequence to use it); except it's blockable and the whole gimmick of RD is that it's *not.* Otherwise, he plays just like a lesser Wolverine, but without Drill Claw.

It's better to use his plasma field super after his DP in the corner (light DP for air combos, heavy DP for ground combos) to setup his Raging Demon for good damage. His Demon can also be easily comboed after Shiden, and his plasma combos. Basically Hayato can be a threat if he lands a combo, or punishes the point and assist character with his plasma combos, but his rushdown being unsafe due to many of his normals having a good amount of lag is what makes him a rather weak character.

There's a ratio mod now. You can patch the DC version with it. It's actually pretty sick. I'm diggin on it. Hopefully more folks patch it in and we can have rollback ratio matches very easily.

I think that if I just lowered the damage and life bar of top tier characters, increased the damage and life bar of low tier characters, this would already bring a great increase of possibilities in matches even if FrameData and Hitboxes are broken. my god the 4 god tiers do a lot of damage without spending any resources and Sentinel has a lot of health. For example if you take Ryu and increase your damage, Wolverine and increase your life or decrease Sentinel and Storm's DAMAGE AND LIFE. this would already bring a slight balance without changing framedata or hitbox.

So you select arcade or vs mode or ratio mode, then you select classic or new balance. I think that's they way to do it. Ryu is a rather fun character to play. He's a main when I play lower tier team (Ryu, Doom, C. America). He's not as combo oriented as Ken or Akuma, but he seems to get a boost in defense after falling below 25%...or it could be just me... Something you should know about Shinku Hadoken: it's best at mid-range, as it's pitiful up-close and only decent full screen. You can also "Cable-style" super (air HVB but without recovery for repeat) for a near-instant, surprise activation (great against whiffed assists). As for combos: a dash-in standing jab, jab, fierce, hadoken into shinku hadoken is a standard ground combo that does great damage. Only do 1 jab for non dash-ins or at start-of-round. Just be careful is you have 3 levels of super as you probably will trigger shin-shoryuken instead of shinku hadoken. For air combo: the standard 4 hit, hadoken into (this is hard) shinku hadoken. The timing has to be spot on because the normal hadoken causes knockdown, although it is easily done against an assist. It can do fairly good damage and looks cool as a bonus.

Thing about his "good" fireball super is that on the ground, its slower (and can be super jumped out of on reaction), if you do it in the air/Tiger knee it, its faster, but since you can't control it like a beam, some characters may be able to crouch under it (especially if you screw up the timing) He's basically "horribly-normalized-nerfhammer'd-cable" :(

@@SpiderMan2012channel exactly! I havent tested it in a while, but in theory cable can ahvb you before ground shinkuu hits him, but not when its done in the air. Maybe its distance specific too, but again, i havent tested it in a long time and i have no way to at the moment, but in theory TKSH will beat ahvb if the ahvb super flash comes after ryu's fireball leaves his hand midscreen. (Feel free to correct if i mis-remembee this) Not like its ever gonna happen in a real match lol, but mvc2 is crazy and thats why I love it.

Would be great if you could comment and show us the strengths and weaknesses of the characters during the match-ups. Pause. Rewind. Slow-mo. Show us what is happening when something significant happens. That’d be icing on the cake!

Ironman unibeam and assist version have the same property as ryu super it will hit both point and assist characters I believe optic blast shares this properties as well Captain America charging star has the same property as well Also ice beam does not break sentinel armor and ice beam stops at whoever it hits first When Justin told max on his video that he would change nothing about the game was crazy The cast drastically needs an overhaul from frame data improvement to property changes to even make some characters decent

Isn't he arguably even worse in UMvC3? I mean sure, he's low tier in Marvel 2, but Marvel 2 has a sh!t tier below a low tier with like, 10 characters who are way worse than Ryu not to mention characters on his tier that are worse than him, while in UMvC3, he's gotta be around bottom 5 right?

He’s decent in UMVC3. Can do a ton of damage if you have the meter. Akuma is just better so he doesn’t see much play. The characters who are worse than him are Hsien Ko, Felicia, She Hulk, Nemisis, Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, VJ imo

Definitely, way better in Umvc3 and I'd dare say he's mid-low ish'. Ryu is actually pretty good character in 3 just that there are characters that live and breathe fuckery. That's the difference 🤣

I think that if I just lowered the damage and life bar of top tier characters, increased the damage and life bar of low tier characters, this would already bring a great increase of possibilities in matches even if FrameData and Hitboxes are broken. my god the 4 god tiers do a lot of damage without spending any resources and Sentinel has a lot of health. For example if you take Ryu and increase your damage, Wolverine and increase your life or decrease Sentinel and Storm's DAMAGE AND LIFE. this would already bring a slight balance without changing framedata or hitbox.

You can DHC Final Atomic Buster's full damage. If you do that into Shin Shoryuken the damage is immense. If you put a small linker in the middle that can be 100%
