Excellent restoration. The cabinet looks really nice. The radio works well and the speakers sound great. I like that the top shelf can be used to put things on it when entertaining guests. It's definitely a nice looking console. I believe that there is a simple way to adjust the rpm of the record player by using a simple rheostat or potentiometer for the power to that motor.

Shaded pole induction? Probably not. That motor spindle just needs to come off and the 60Hz be put on. I would be good money that the motor could just be replaced with a standard US Alliance unit for V-M changers of that era, problem solved.

As someone in my later 60s, I'm very glad to see younger people working on these things and keeping them going. I'd like to think that future generations will not only see how these things from my youth looked, but also actually hear how they sounded. Here in the UK this type of unit was called a 'radiogram', and most were trashed as we have tiny houses here, so there isn't room for larger units. You couldn't sell a radiogram here, even in good working order, as sadly no-one wanted them. Keep up the good work!

"Leistungsaufnahme" is power consumption, yes and "Vor Feuchtigkeit schützen" is indeed keep away from moisture. "Lautsprechergruppe" means loudspeaker-group. It's kinda funny to hear your take on a pronunciation of german words, i like it. Mayhaps you'll stumble upon a Telefunken Opus 2550 one day for a restoration, would be interesting to see - it combines 14 tubes and semiconductors. "Lautsprecherschaltplan" means loudspeaker schematics. Yes, the US still has military bases here in germany like Rammstain Air Base.

Reminds me of a console my son recently bought to be a TV stand. His is from circa 1960, sold by Eaton's Dept stores here in Canada. His is a Samba model, made by Normende in West Germany. Still works too!

Gosh, this was really interesting and very well filmed. My German grandparents taught me to write. I recognize that 'I' in Imperial very well. I actually had some teachers punish me for putting a stroke through my numeral "7", here in the US. Refused to give in. I think these units were built to a price point, down to the last Pfennig. Sort of like IKEA furniture or today's Cadillacs - what you see is great, what you don't see, well, good 'nuf. As to record players - you have the skill set to master the V-M 1200/1300 family in your sleep. The only rough spot is remembering to line up the tang from the balance arm properly when reassembling the mechanism. Getting that dratted cam loose is a battle. As a girl, I'd spray it with freeze-it spray. Today, use wart remover spray, liberally. Shrinks it right down and lets the penetrating oil break it free.

I just did research on it, and while Google says it was made in 1962, other websites including Radio Museum had said it was made earlier than that. Either way, I'm glad you brought it back to active service again! I first listened to Daft Punk since middle school in the mid - to late 1990's, and I'm 40. Thanks for the video.

You should get an award for having the most fun garage to hang out in. I like the style of the console and it sounds great. A while back I worked on a big old Grundig that still had customs declaration papers inside, filled out by the US Navy sailor who brought it over. He also declared a carton of cigarettes, must have needed them for the trip back. Happy new year from sunny Oregon!

I find your videos well worth watching, you come across as a nice and occasionally funny person. I enjoy your dry humour and modest presentation.

I do, too. That Mr. Carlson and Glasslinger think he's competent says a lot about the quality of his work. We're fortunate he lets us into his garage.

The unit looks exactly like a 1963 Telefunken stereo my brother bought at the base exchange while in Europe, same turntable, etc. The indicator light bulbs had grid diffusers, only found in Germany.

A great restoration, I really enjoyed watching it! It;s funny that there is always some silly old fool complaining about the music that is being used FOR DEMONSTRATION like it is going to ruin the equipment ! I love Daft Punk especially the Random Access Memories LP. Happy new year from the United Kingdom!

There's nothing wrong with your music choice, it's just today's "Pop" music is terrible, but then again I turn 50 this year lol. Thanks for your videos.

Its not. There is a paper printed label in the back that literally says " JMPERIAL" . Someone did tell me that the letter "J" in German is often pronounced as "Y" or phentically as " EEEE" So it could be a play on words to sound like it says Imperial. Sort of like how a lot of American brands would intentionally mispell things like " Star Brite" or whatnot.
@ethelryan2572 күн бұрын
@@setharp Maybe, but I learned to make my "I" that way from one of my grandparents, in Germany. "J" does sound a lot like English "Y" (think of the German word - "Ja", but it is not used as a vowel (and German is fighting the 'and sometimes "Y" fight just like all the other Germanic language groups, including English and the purists have been losing, just like in all the other Germanic languages, for forever.)
@danny19592 күн бұрын
“J” and “I” were originally the same letter.

It's a Kuba Jmperial Capri. I'm pretty sure the right side held a bar for holding liquor bottles and glasses originally. It had a center glass shelf and was lit by that bulb and pretty nice for entertaining for cocktails after a long days work. The 45 rpm record holder inside is a disappointment and not original to the design. Servicemen got this instead to replace the swanky bar so no kids were getting into dad's liquor cabinet stereo when it did get home. Americans had a "rec room" with a bar in the house back in the 1960s anyhow. Impressive job Seth!
@setharp3 күн бұрын
I'm not so sure. There weren't any holes, extra screws, or discolored areas on the right side and there is a version I saw on Radiomuseum that had the record rack in it versus the bar. The turntable in it is original to the set and is a pretty generic ( for Germany ) licensed changer. This one is missing the 45 Spindle. But we have extras at the museum so I will stick one in it later.

Turntable will play too fast on 60 hz. The higher the frequency, the faster it will go. Maybe there is an adapter (motor pulley, etc) to convert it to 60 hz.
