Great progress. Thoroughly enjoyed how you used the rebar. No shortcuts. A home that will last 500 years.

Modern concrete will last about 100 years if properly cared for. (It's basically cheap shit compared to the stuff the Romans used.) That said, I don't know how well concrete encased in ICFs will last. It should, in theory, be more resilient to weathering, but that might not be true for ICFs underground because the external insulation will be susceptible to insect damage - which in turn will lead to the normal decay from temperature variations and water intrusion.

I remember back in the 50s 60s in Puerto Rico houses were make out if concrete, was no ICF back then but is the same principal rebar, concrete and 8-in x 8-in x 16-in Standard Cored Concrete Block, even the roof was made out of concrete, I know houses that still standing today from 60 or more years, now is done with concrete forms. this house is going to be really strong as long as you seal the espouse concrete for the whether, love the videos.

Heated roof and driveway, yell you got me on that one, why not now instead of thinking about it later and wishing you had. I love watching guys like you that can think outside the box and thinking ahead. People could learn a lot of stuff like you have if they just get out and work and don’t be scared to make a mistake, that’s the way you learn sometimes. I’ve worked my butt off to have and do stuff cause I couldn’t pay others all the time. Jesse I love your house and the way your building it. It probably will not be the last cement house you build unless you don’t want to build anymore for others. I’ve seen some nice bunkers for storm shelters that’s not half as big nor as nice as this basement will be when finished. A lot of them may cost as much as your house. I hope your family had a great Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year, Stay Safe

Might I suggest at the next pour have a 3x3x12 form somewhere out of the way where in future you can bolt your rebar bender, tubing benders and other assorted tools that need anchorage. Tire changers that kind of thing. You can drill and put a variety of threaded inserts for many different tools. A short bolt in each anchor keeps the dirt out until needed as well as water and ice. Bury it in the ground to the top.

Use copper for your drip edge. It is expensive, but you have a beautiful house going and you definitely do not want to cheap out on something so visible. Have the kids hand hammer a strip with a rubber or rawhide mallet. Hem both edges and fold just greater than 90 degrees. Slip it into that saw cut you described. It'll be beautiful for many decades and the kids will always be able to take pride in the help they provided.
@royordway91573 жыл бұрын
Won't the concrete react to the copper in a bad way? That's why we always sleave concrete for copper pipes and tubing going through or resting on concrete. I'm thinking about fuel oil tubing from a tank to the heating appliance. Lead isn't real pretty, but it enjoys co-habiting with concrete.
@kevinhornbuckle3 жыл бұрын

@@kevinhornbuckle I've been in the building industry, carpenter, up here in Maine for almost 47 years. We have always used lead flashing on masonry, and it was always mortared in weather it was new or a re-flashing/pointing job. We have used a lot of copper for roof flashing both commercial and residential. When we'd put a rubber roof on a "flat" commercial roof we'd either use a term bar caulked in with urethane or use steel coil stock. I really like the PL product line.
