In this video, I transport a 1990 Komatsu PC120 -5 excavator that my dad bought to fix up. I got the lowboy hung up on the road and had to think quick. I also rent a 53' dry van trailer to transport some ICF's for my dad's house.

".... going to pick up an excavator from my daddy. ..." the perfect son. Your mom and dad will always be mom and dad and that is as it should be. Loading that excavator on a taller trailer would have been terrifying. Floats with loaded skiddesr used to get hung up coming out of my drive way all the time. Several tandem loads of gravel sorted the issue out. However the highway was resurfaced and widened since so if we were moving floats in and out now we'd be back with the same issues. You need a big container shop in that field. 2x bigger than Andrew's at least.

Jesse,! I watch your videos every time,,Can I mention aa a retired lorry driver, for safety, there is a routine when dropping a trailer after use,First put down the trailer legs, then release the air lines and electric plug, the last thing is the 5th wheel, that way the trailer is unable to run backwards from you. I hope you don’t mind me saying, but it also avoids any damages modern trailers with air brakes have a parking brake usually near to the trailer leg winding handle..

I use the 5th wheel grease packets you can get a pilot/flying j no mess at all you just have to lower your air bags when hooking up and raise them back up after the 5th wheel plate is already under the trailer otherwise the bags will just get pushed off the 5th wheel plate! don't forget that when you eventually replank the low boy.. you want the planks to stick up above the steel to give the excavator treads the most traction. i would like to know if you have any truck bed liner spray companies in your area.. might be able to sand blast the loading ramps and the top of the side rails.. and apply truck bed liner to them.. i don't know if that would be more rip resistant than conveyor belt.. but it would NOT require any holes to be drilled to mount it. you could use anchor bolt epoxy to mount the conveyor belt sections to the sand blasted deck surface.. you would have to use a layer of foam sheathing then plywood clamped tight to hold the conveyor belt while the epoxy cures for the best application. you could bolt down full width lengths of conveyor belting to the wood decking with the edge hanging over the side rails again to give the excavator track pads the best grip on the trailer.

I was placing cans welding rods on the deck just after loading a 25 ton cherry picker onto it and the guy in the cab hit the lock button on the fifth wheel. There was slack in the wench and the trailer came back off the truck as a stepped back but was to slow, second slower would have most likely been both feet. you really should buy (or build) a dump trailer - like a 30 ton or a 35 ton with big wide tires for low ground pressorure so it doesnt sink while driving off road, if you put tirechains on two axles of the semitruck tractor you got yourself a quasi offroad dumptruck for cheap i know someone that used some heavy haul semitruck axles to build a offroad dump trailer, made it all out of strips of sheet steel, giant U iron from a old airplane hangar roof and thick walled 3 inch diameter liquid gas pipe - either pipeline or pieces of the drilling rig, then he used two of the hydraulic cylinders from a old excavator, a Atlas and a homemade linkage system for the dump hydraulics, also put a flow limiter onto the cylinders so the bed doesnt come crashing down if the hydraulic lines fail - then he put some car or truck engine with a cheap high volume tractorshop hydraulic pump onto the front end of the lower frame... worked for four months after workhours on it and used only abaut 3000$ over all for it - the metall was almost all scrap , he paid scap value for the hydraulic cylinders of the burned out ancient excavator and had to repack them, he paid pound price for the axles, he paid half of new price on used tires with rims. Most of the scrap he collected over the course of half a year, he used 3 phase plasma cutter, several large bottles of Mig welding gas, and abaut two bottles each of acetylene and oxygen for burncuttign the stuff to thick for the plasma torch - like over 0.7 inches - like the plates holding the hydraulic cylinders and some of the frame reinforcements around the hydraulic cylinders as well as the plates for the axles suspension to connect with the frame.
