You guys have no idea how much i enjoy watching you and Andrew get so much work done with tools from Harbor Freight, Tractor supply and craftsman - when all the tool snobs insist you need a $300 screwdriver to accomplish anything. Congrats on the new trailer. Mounting a pipe to keep half a dozen traffic cones on board might be a worthwhile addition too. If you decide to do that, you can get bumper mount cone holders for the truck, a surface mount one for the deck, or just bolt a pipe adapter onto the trailer and screw in a 2 foot piece of black pipe. It’s definitely worth it if you ever have to work on busy road, or god forbid break down on the side a highway. You get peoples attention a lot quicker once traffic cones go out, and you can create a little barrier to push the cars a little bit further off you.

That's an awesome find. When the camera was on the trailer- you could see & hear it didn't wobble and it was quiet. I'd definitely change the pony oil and jack oil. Make sure those lock rods are in good shape. Good spot for a $30 backup camera w/monitor! Nice to be able to cut own wood.

LOVE the format of these videos, for many of the scenes capture unique perspectives that are not offered elsewhere. For example, I have pulled a number of small trailers before and understand intuitively the need to make extra wide sweeps on turns and going around sharp corners, but your "camera at the rear of the trailer" sequence provides a unique perspective on the geometries involved, especially when watching the tracks of the tractor wheels relative to the tracks of the trailer wheels. Many, many thanks for putting the extra effort needed to capture these fo us! I know that there is a ton of work to set up, capture and edit these sequences, and want you to know that they are MUCH appreciated!

thanks. I really love lowboys and tractors, I always had a thing for trailers in general. I love hauling things. That lowboy is a challenge though, its very long with very little clearance and since the axles are set all the way back; it makes an extremely wide turn

When you back up to the lowboy trailer after loading or unloading back up enough to spin the rear tires just a touch. It just helps to set the locking mechanism better. But you got a very nice trailer there Jesse. It is well built and should last you a very long time. Great video.

One more system that needs maintenance, but without it, you dont have access to a lot of narrow entrances... a stepped deck equipment trailer with the axles a few yards further up front would already make a big difference in manoeverability

Nice to see someone else besides me apply teflon tape the easy way. I've done it like this for 35 years and it just drives me crazy to see someone apply it in the rolling up way instead of the unrolling way. Very nice.

that irks me too. doing it this way keeps it tight, doing it the unrolling way keeps it loose and then it turns as you turn the pipes

@@jmuller86 Absolutely. Right on brother. Loose, and it balls up and will leak. Some people will argue that, but the minute you loosen the pipe fitting for a possible mistake you'll see. You don't have to re-roll it. If it's rolled tight in "This" direction you can back the fitting off and the teflon is still bonded. EVERY TIME. There's more to just direction of the threads, with bonding the teflon.

Great video Jesse and I so enjoyed your production. Good buy for your first start. I used to work for the railway here in Canada . I hauled trailer trains with 20 ft containers, sometimes up to 125,000 LBs gross so it was great to watch you and all so going through the gears and mostly I ran fuller 10's and 13's speeds. We had no Jake Brakes just the gears.

some lowboys have a hydraulic lift in gooseneck to hold up, instead of the board. use a 3" x 4" that is wider then the truck frame. also your boards on the lowboy deck should be at least a 1/2" to 1" higher then the steel frame, this way your steel tracks will be on the wood and not the steel frame. also for the outriggers, which I don't see on the lowboy, do the same for the outriggers board, your tracks will be on wood and not the steel. look at some other lowboys to see what they have. your doing a great job on the repairs.

Nice trailer Jesse! I can offer a tip, sand and paint your rims on the tractor. DOT will hone right in on them and decide you may be easy pickins for them...it will make your pretrip much easier looking for cracks or defects also.

Considering what you have in the big truck/trailer, another $200-300 in front and rear view recording cameras might be worthwhile as a liability reducer while driving and also an aid to backing up when you reattach the trailer. I know you have a lot of cameras already but a permamount in cab would I think be worth it. Big trucks loaded can be a magnet for certain unsavory types. Really like your explanations and didactic thinking through while you work.

When working with NPT hydraulic lines up to 3,000 psi, I was taught to wrap just 1 time with teflon tape, leaving 2 end threads empty so no tape "washed" into the line. It worked every time!

I'm an ex-OTR driver and I have noticed you seem to employ the Jake to slow down on low/no grade road situations. None of my business of course, but here's my comment. Engine Brakes are a great safety tool for running down long grades (my driving experience using Jakes is mainly out west with long 5-7% grades). OTH, Jakes are loud and can be annoying to 'civilians' when used outside of that necessity. While engine braking will save on pad wear, in most situations it might be best to shut it off.

them 977 are old as F, parts are getting very hard to find, every burnt unit been stripped, new parts are a battle, i have a messy HD450 i pulled the engine out 20 years ago, the tork converter went on it and i have yet to find one for it, it was a great track loader with a big heavy duty detachable back hoe, that thing out pushed a cat D4. i have a blade for it, i use to win bids to barre brush on hydro right of ways along dirt roads in to resorts when they had run hydro in, but all the trees an brush had to be logged out and make the ground look like a park, barre all the brush piles for many miles. if i recall the last one i did was 38 miles. i loaded blasted rock in a rock corrie in my 20's with a cat 977 huge rocks, i broke my collarbone there when trying to get the track frame bolts out, had a 12 foot long pipe on a 1" power bar, the 2-1/16 inch snap-on socket broke and the pipe hit me in the collarbone.there was 3 of use on that power bar an pipe.. . for city river bank erosion control, we carries the big rocks up the middle of the river with cat 922 and 933 loaders, at hat time i broke the track frame on one side, it took over 2 years at that time already to find one for the 977 so i wouldnt work it hard.. i also ripped the bucket open demoing an old hocky arena concrete floor. for a new floor full of rebar and cooling tubes i spent a week heating an beating the bottom of that buck back into place and welding it up, that was one hell of a strong floor a foot thick

Great work ethic! Looks like the swing lever for uncoupling the trailer from the goose neck is missing a lock pin to keep it in coupled or uncoupled position. Drove semi briefly for a farmer. You're doing well! Thanks for the video! Life is a learning curve! HINDSIGHT is 20-15!

Just a suggestion there Jesse, seeing as your carrying heavy loads !!! You could raise the fifth wheel 4'and that will give you a bit of ground clearance as it is low in the front of the trailer than it is at the back ,( that what i could see from the video) and also enough height when you unhitch from the low boy .. If that is just a little bit too high , you can use your air bags on the prime mover to lower it enough so you can get out, then put the air bags back up or you can make a leaver that flip up too support the neck of the trailer near the back of the chassis behind the fifth wheel when you unhook you engage the leaver that lifts the blocks ... I've been driving trucks for 30 years and ever since air bag have been use , we always dump the air bags about 2" away from the trailer then once where under the skid plate we activate the air bags then slowly reverse back on once the fifth wheel is touching skid plate ... Look Jesse, seeing as your carrying heavy weight, i would get it sand blast so that you can see if it is structurally sound and there is no cracks in the chassis rails of the trailer ... The last thing you want is too loose your load or kill some one ... So just go over all the welds too check if there aren't any stress cracks ... If there no stress cracks , you've got your self a good trailer that will last you for some time ...Well done Jesse !!!!

I always heard that called an "Oil Field Float" trailer... I saw one where the jack used two air-bags on the truck side, so everything was pneumatic and didn't need a pony motor and hydraulics. What's wrong with using the bucket to raise the front of the tracks onto the trailer, then spin the arm around and lift the rear of the tracks and roll the excavator on the trailer... No ramps needed. You might want to use air-bags instead of "jacks" for the truck side...
