You make so many of us envious that you can still work with your Dad, I would give anything to work with mine one more day.

Some of my best childhood memories are from when I “helped” my dad work on cars 😊. Starting at age 3 my job was to hold the flashlight and hand him tools, I’m so grateful he taught me almost everything I know when it comes to vehicle repair and maintenance! Sadly, most men of my generation have no interest in cars, a lot of them can’t even change a flat tire.

My pop (who shared his love of cars with me) has been gone almost 8 years. I'd give anything for one more afternoon hanging out. I was very pleasantly suprised to see how nice the insides of that motor were.

Fun video! It's great your dad is there to assist! Those pistons look pretty corroded, but the camshaft etc. look nice! You'll have to find a way to lift the car up some more to get the engine back in!! Can't wait for the next one!

Great to see you and your Dad working on the engine together. I can see where you got your knowledge of cars from. Thanks for the upload Jerod 🙂👍

VW air cooled engines, which this "basically" is are so awesome to rebuild! You can actually rebuild one in your garage with zero machine shopping! My first car was a 66 bug and I learned so much rebuilding it in my parents garage. All I had was some tools and a book called "the complete idiots guide to VW engines" it was written by an old hippie in the 60s but man it covered everything in a understandable way!

Neat! You can really see the differences between the Porsche engine and a VW engine. It's not just a hopped up bug. Thanks, and Woof to Walter. And Hi Dad!

I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but you can take one of the rear wheels off, then you can slide engine sideways instead of out back, and the shroud/generator carbs would have more head room going through the wheel well.

Thanks a lot. Nice video. But where's Walter? 😉 Experiencing some sputtering carbs on my own 356 at the moment, but everything else works, so not going to do a engine pull this year.

Definitely more complex than the air-cooled Beetle.

Oh dear God! I see they blocked the air intake on the back of the fan housing with an aftermarket oil cooler. That’s a no-no. Seems like you might have to service the transaxle as well. Looks like you only need the heads reworked, maybe pistons and cylinders and new bearings and you’ll be set.

At the 1:10 mark…where did you place the jack for a single point lift (getting both back wheels up). I’m working on the car in a shipping container (storage) and can’t get a jack to the drivers side easily.
@Jerod_Helt2 жыл бұрын
I put the jack under the “U” shaped mount that’s between the engine and the transmission

Hey man, I'm currently stripping my 356 B engine and I got to the flywheel gland nut. I've used the breaker bar (w/ 4ft steel tube) with no success. I see you're using the gland nut removal tool and as much as I want it, I have a hard time spending $130 on a tool for 1-2 uses. I may have to get it though. Did you try this flywheel nut on your own before using this tool? I just need it to work if I spend that much..
@Jerod_Helt3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been able to get them off in the past with a good impact gun. But you really need that tool to torque it when you put it back on.

Looks like you have a 1965 912 engine. Close but not exactly the same as a 356 engine. Order parts accordingly...

You can adjust the play back speed to 0.25 if you want. Sound gets a little strange though.
