The thing is, the roast formula worked for Gervais because he's been among them. But for a newcomer like Jokoy who hasnt mixed much from that crowd, that wouldn't work and will set him up to fail. The roast formula can work on what could be his 2nd year, considering they had a tough time booking a host. His body language and apologies only show that he has mad respect for hollywood royalty. Come to think of it, his apologies made it all the more funny, it's like "i can't believe i'm roasting these people! they're making me do this!"
