I was spinning a staff for years as a kid before I found out it could be used as a weapon. 15 years later I made one out of an IronWood sapling I found in the woods. Works pretty well.

Morgan from TWD is where i seen this awhile ago and was very interested since then😆 i only just recently found your channel few weeks ago and now i have my own jo staff(broomstick lol).. here goes💪🏾😊 What else interested me in this was the fact that my own race (Maori - natives of New Zealand 🇳🇿) have our own style similar to this called "Mau Rākau" (Mo-ra-ko) where we use a "Taiaha" (Tie-a-haa) which looks like spear but i am yet to learn that also, but will be starting with your Jo staff training as it seems a little easier😊💪🏾

Hi sir. Want to ask. I tried the wrist turns, the third warm up before the figure 8 warmup, I have a problem keeping the staff in the middle. Mind sharing how to improve on it?
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Great question. You have to allow it to slide back into the middle as you turn. It’s a very subtle move and if you slow down you will get better at it faster. I talk about it in some of my more recent videos and I will make a new one today and try and go over it in a little more detail. Thanks!!! Keep training!

If I have a rubber tip on my regular walking stick, do I need to try to remove the tip for learning these techniques or can I just learn to get around the tip? I like keeping rubber tips on my walking sticks.

I have a question which is for the sword strike and pushing strike where you hit them in the throat or head, do you push the stick with your dominant hand for more power or your non dominant hand
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Both! The back hand does most though and the front hand more for accuracy but upon impact, tighten both arms forcefully! Also, practice squeezing your abdominal muscles too upon impact and that will dramatically increase your power!

@tomhunter999
@tomhunter999 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the video. I love it. I don't have a Jo staff but I am self training with a thin bamboo stick. The problem is it's always flying from my hand. Apart from my bad technique and awkward fingerwork, does the weight of a stick make a huge difference? Like I have a hard time keeping the centre of gravity around my hand. And I really appreciate the spinning parts. I enjoy them and just want to support them. I think ppl are always confused about training and fighting. You train you muscles and tendons, to build up strength flexibility. You don' t have to fight with every technique/trick your train, because that may not be the purpose. Like you do push-ups. You don't fight with push-ups.
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 4 жыл бұрын
tomhunter999 excellent feedback and insight! Yes. The weight matters but not completely. Just slow down for now and gradually speed up as it feels easier. In the end a heavier staff is fun to train with!

If jo is a short staff, what are hanbo and tanbo then? ;-)
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 6 жыл бұрын
shirai ryu great question! The Hanbo and tanbo seem to fall into the “stick” category, not long enough to be a staff, more like cane length and kali stick length. What’s your take? How would you describe them?
@e4224
@e4224 4 жыл бұрын
A hanbo is literally half a bo, which is much shorter than a jo, which is more like a 2/3 to 3/4 bo. A tanbo is shorter than a hanbo. Lengths from ground up: bo=head, jo=armpit, hanbo=hip, tanbo=smaller. At least that's my take :)

Hi Matt, just came across your channel. I'm interested in Jo and have learned when studying Aikido. Do you really need to spin it around like that? For what purpose?
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 6 жыл бұрын
Tiyo Prasetyo it builds hand strength, flexibility, and dexterity, improving handling of the jo. It also is fun for me. It is not common in the Aikido schools I have visited or with the old school Jo instructor I took classes from. I didn’t really think of it until you asked, but I probably do it because of the long staff work I have done in Korean and Chinese styles. They like to spin and it is more popular now with the advent of “modern karate” guys who do it with super light, toothpick style Bo staffs for demonstration or competition. It might now be traditional to Japanese styles though

Hi thanks for subscribing! Jo is about as tall as the middle of your upper arm. The Bo is as tall or a little taller than the top of your head. There are many unique strikes to Jo that makes it more practical for self defense IMO. Where do you live? Have you started training yet?

Spinning? For what? Fighting only with strong grip and simplicity. Less means better. To much tricks.
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 5 жыл бұрын
Spinning leads to improved flexibility, dexterity, speed, strength, and power in the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and a stronger core. It enhances your ability to control your staff and smoothly glide your hand along the staff to increase striking speed and power without losing control of the staff. Using the Jo, which I see as the most optimal length staff for self defense, you need to have incredible proprioception and heavily calloused hands to slide along the length of the staff without losing it while blocking, striking, or spearing. Spinning is a great way to lubricate the joints and warm up the body in order to stay safe from injury during your training. Spinning is not really a trick, it’s simply learning how your staff and body move through space and time. You should try it before you form an opinion on it.

I have been involved in martial arts for 38 years. I have been a trainer for 29 years. Always a smaller number of perfectly performed techniques is better than thousands of demonstration techniques. In the conditions of real combat, the simplest works - one feint and rapid technique. I use a self defence walking stick in most cases like a traditional katana with a strong grip and without mating dances.Strengthening, flexibility and strength - all I do in the gym and as a fitness trainer :)
