This is a song about generosity, kindness, human warmth, about caring for another in need. The world needs to hear this There are too many croquants and not enough Auvergnats. Auvergnats had a reputation for stinginess, but this one defied the stereotype. He was modeled on the man who protected Georges Brassens when he escaped from a German work camp. It is one of the most beautiful and important songs from France's golden age of chanson, the 1950s, 1960s and 70s, Brassens was a master of chanson. Joan Baez, whose native language was Spanish , does a creditable cover in French.
