Yoshi Sekiguchi, Graphic Designer/Inventor and country singer in Japan, and everyone called "Japanese Hank Williams!" Yes, I agree everyone, and I worship her "Blown in the wind. But I have to confess you that the title of this song made me change my studio name. After I worked for PLAYBOY VIP magazine for five years, I decided to be independent and have my own studio. Since I was born in Japan, and it is called "Rising Sun." So I made a symbolic sunrise from the horizon and named my studio "Rising Sun Design." Then I heard of this song and now my studio name is Yoshi Sekiguchi Design, LLC.

First time ever I've heard her sing this. She puts this in the gospel category. She did like Odetta, but all of them said Odetta influenced them - Joplin, Ronstad, Baez, well, maybe that was it..??

@Clark Destry the recordings I’m most familiar with are as you say, from the perspective of a girl in a brothel. There are also old versions as a boys lament Roy Acuff for one. I suspect it’s been gender fluid for centuries and the lament has probably involved prostitution,VD, drinking, gambling, murder. These great songs can be hard to pin down.

When I was a high-school student of Japan, I listened to the song on a radio. I was moved by her singing but I always didn't understand detailed meaning of song. (I was a lazy student about English). After buying a disk I read lyrics card with dictionary. I had understood. Then the song moved me deeply more and more. In my memory, this is her own song. For example, Animals’ version is entirely other music for me.

I was in high school from 1959 to 1953. I was much more into folk music than I was rock and roll. That's what brought me into the peace movement in 1965. And yet in December 1969 I was drafted into the marines. Go figure. The late 60's and early 70's were a tumultuous time.

I used to play this in the morning, back in high school, on cold drunk mornings, in late November when the sun went black. Waiting at the bus stop, feeling the dark wind on my face. Part of me died with those leaves. Wen't to New Orleans because of this song. I found the sun. It burns warmly in the seam, of the mantle, of my heart.

A song with an interesting, and famous background. A folk tune, brought in theory from Britain, early on, which became popular in New Orleans.... So MANY famous people sang it over the years...most names you wouldn't know... But for example, Woody Guthrie in 1941, later Lead Belly, of "Midnight Special" fame...sang it in 1944 and released a different recording of it, in 1948.... Then Pete Seeger in 1958, followed by Bob Dylan 2 years before The Animals recorded it... Originally it was a woman in the title role of victim of a life of sin...later changed by guy groups....here reproduced by the great Joan Baez....soulful, almost mournfully recorded...Joan was a great folk singer, among the best of that era...met her once, with a dear friend she was performing with Mary Travers....RIP Mary and Pete.... Please enjoy...hope this gives you a sense of the past and this song...

Really, it was singers like Joan Baez were those that made my hairs stand on end, and my inner ears perk up from their disengaged slumber. I felt that her cover of The House of The Rising Sun reinvested it with meaning and reinforced the true nature of the song. Her careful cautionary way of telling the song, in her strong and perfect vibrato/soprano that cuts through any sense of the insincere, she invited me to investigate the song further. I love her sense of commitment to music and performance being almost like that of a priestess, as opposed to a Diva (not knocking the Diva though!) Baez has a minstrel look to her persona, singing like a choir girl that got caught in a nightmare carnival, whilst slanting the guitar upwards and playing like she learned the ropes from a rambling virtuoso. As if she herself has encountered the very gambler, the archetype himself so many times and his horror, his way of feeling and existing, and the harsh truths that it ensues. She gives it a foreboding quality in a very simplistic and unforced way. The animals of course made this the first folk/rock hit. This genre becoming a new phenomena for everyday listeners. And of course Eric Burdon’s howling voice and the A minor arpeggio style of playing gives the song new accessibility. But Baez has a way of hardly raising her voice (by her standards) to relate something quite old and terrifying about a life that has lost its way, over whatever it is, it can only be so many things. The usual things. Love, crime, morality and the sense of losing it personally and socially, sex and lust, disease, death, detatchment, isolation… always a sense that someone is falling, or is simply “fallen” Which brings to Dolly Parton’s version. I don’t necessarily feel much of a vibe the music in this version, but the lyrics actually made me cry. She has clearly gone for the “fallen woman” archetype. And this is what I love about her. She really must have taken Johnny Cash’s advice when he told her to trust her own instincts with music. Well she probably is good at that considering she has been playing since she was a young girl for TV and radio and coming from a good business minded father and a mother who bore 12 or so children and sung them songs from folklore to soothe and entertain. Dolly tells the tale from the perspective of a lady who lost her mother at an early age and made a working in a French brothel (The Vieo Carre), knowing “sin, shame and strife” throughout all her life. Although Joan Baez does sing of a “poor girl” she doesn’t give the song the twist that Dolly does, with the introduction of a new narrative. Having been one of only seven women to win the Country Music Associations Entertainer Award, I think it is fair to say that we are in great need of marvelous female performers, and of female stories and perspectives. This version of the song, in my opinion, is a great and timeless contribution to the ever-extending web of this little ballad from Broadsheet. The House of The Rising Sun Or The Rising Sun Blues. www.kirstyheggie.com www.facebook/kirstyheggie

"House Of The Rising Sun" There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God, I know I'm one My mother was a tailor She sewed my new blue jeans My father was a gamblin' man Down in New Orleans Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and trunk And the only time he's satisfied Is when he's on a trump [Organ Solo] Oh mother, tell your children Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun Well, I got one foot on the platform The other foot on the train I'm goin' back to New Orleans To wear that ball and chain Well, there is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God, I know I'm one

This is probably what people were saying in the 1960s that it's not music like there was in the early 1900s. So if no one els likes what you listen to let them be. Everyone loves Joan, she exudes purity and grace. My favorites are her peace songs- she believed in them so much, and time proved her right. "Last night I had the strangest dream I ever had before....."

Wow, growing up in the late seventies and early eighties, only knew of Joan in legend. Led Zeppelin had remade one of her songs. Now thanks to the generous people on You-Tube I get to hear amazing material that I had know idea even existed. I love playing House of the Rising Sun on the guitar and singing it as done by the Animals. This is great! Thank you so much!!!

intensegamer99, one should not reject the reality, even it this reality is not what one expects to see. You could check all the dates in wiki at least /wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun and save yourself from demonstrating your ignorance.

According to folklorist Alan Lomax in his book Our Singing Country (1941), the melody of "The House of the Rising Run" is a traditional English tune and the lyrics were written by Georgia Turner and Bert Martin (both from Kentucky).
