I called my mom Mommie Dearest once. She wasn't bothered because she knew I LOVED Joan, and I adore my Mom. My maternal Grandmother was a fan of Joan Crawford - she loved her. So, I asked her what she thought of Bette Davis, and she made a face and said, "She's a Slob!" Bette was still alive at that time. My friend asked her if she liked Kate Hepburn, and Grandma said, "She looks like a horse!" lol I don't have wire hangers in my house, because i hang all my pants and dress shirts and thicker hangers w/fuzzy material on them hold the clothes on them better.

I don't think it's difficult to believe it all that an abuser would only abuse her to oldest and not the youngest I also don't think it's difficult to believe Christina's accounts as an abuse victim myself it actually sounds very real very genuine and I hope that people stopped discrediting christina because Joan was a famous actress

I agree with you. For example, the first born of a young or inexperienced/unstable mother will have a different parenting experience than children born years later to the same mother who has possibly grown and whose life has become more stable. Parenting experiences can definitely be different. Also, abusive parents rarely perpetuate their abuse in front of other adults.

Thank you for sharing this perspective. I regret that my words came across as a defense. My intention was only that I can’t say for sure what happened behind closed doors. However with time and space from when I made this video I will say that now with the perspective of having a second child I do see how much I’ve grown as a parent so although I could never harm either of my children, it does give some clarity to how Joan could have certainly changed from when she had her first child. I’m sorry you went through abuse. ❤️ thank you again for sharing.

I agree that parents can isolate and abuse one child. I would still think, that despite the age gap, the twins would have observed/noticed something as they got older. Maybe they would have been able to still say that they saw Joan in a different way, but be honest about Christina being treated differently. Also, if Joan was such an abusive drunk and got worse as she got older, wouldn’t the twins have experienced at least some of the abuse? I just finished reading the book and am curious if anyone else has? I felt that Christina was rather hard to please herself and that she was rather conceited. She talks constantly about how perfect, smart, beautiful, talented and resilient she is. Idk who really brags about how perfect and adorable they were as a young child? Weird. Also, while the experiences that happen in the book certainly can and do happen, I could embellish my childhood experience as well. I have my masters degree in social work and have a background in therapy and mental health and could use a lot of that background info to guide the way I could portray the other characters in my book. Just because someone sees a resemblance to their own childhood doesn’t make Christina’s account true….always enjoy a good conversation about the subject tho! Nothing wrong with ppl having different opinions; we could all be “right.”

Loved this video. I do have some comments, however. Some people, including Christina's godmother, I believe named Helen Hayes, did personally witness abusive behavior of Joan toward Christina and Christopher. Cheryl Crane, Lana Turner's daughter, who went to school with Christina, said on Phil Donahue that Lana said that she and other actors were aware of Joan's abusing Christina and Chris. An estate sale from a former household employee of JC included a note containing instructions to tie Chris down at night, typed by JC. One of the neighbors saw Chris tied up in bed. Also, when Joan tried to legitimately adopt children, she was turned down by the state. Appears they didn't deem her fit. The "twins" JC adopted from human trafficker Georgia Tan, were probably not even related at all, as GT would regularly falsify birth certificates. Many details of Christina's book can be verified if one chooses to investigate. Christina says JC's husband, Philip Terry, saw Christina tied up in the shower and that JC instructed him to spank Christina with a hairbrush as discipline. I think he was alive when the book was published, and he never denied it. JC's household employment agency stopped sending her help because all the workers would eventually quit due to her outbursts. Keenan Wyn's son, Van Johnson's stepson, wrote in his memoir about cruel treatment he and his mother witnessed by JC toward Christina at a birthday party. Mrs. Chadwick from Chadwick School heard JC being verbally abusive to Christina on the phone. Christina says JC called an officer to the house to take her to juvenile hall after JC attacked her, leaving her with a black eye. JC showed obvious favoritism amongst her children, even with her beloved "twins." One "twin" received ALL of JC's personal property; the other a miserly trust fund. I believe the secretary who worked for JC for 50 years received a payout in the will, as well. Yeah, the same one who never (coincidentally) witnessed any abuse. Notwithstanding, Christina mentions that a lot of the abuse occurred as "night raids," at an hour when the secretary wouldn't be working. According to Christina, one secretary physically intervened and stopped JC from choking Christina, shouting, "Stop, Joan, you're gonna kill her." JC's longtime makeup artist noted Jc's alcoholism, lamenting, "She never should have been allowed to adopt those kids." (Well, she legally wasn't. ) It is reported that the nuns from Jc's Catholic school were physically abusive toward her, beating her in the head with a cane, among other punishments. This was not uncommon in parochial schools at this time. JC could very well have been acting out the abuse done to her. One of the "twins" described her mother as "firm," but that JC mellowed in later years. Christina told Larry King that she saw JC hit the "twins," too. They were both alive when this was said, and they never disputed it. Christina also told LK that Chris received worse abuse than she did. If Christina is trying to sell a fake abuse story for attention or money, why would she say that?

Children raised in the same home can have very different ideas and perceptions of what their families were like..for instance my mom was the oldest and born in 1931, I think my grandmother was 17 when my mom was born, a brother and sister came and they all pretty much had the same upbringing, life on a farm in oHIO, My mom was a majorette and the band and grandma would see my mom got to practices and games, etc. mt mom mentioned when she was about 10 she and my grandma got diptheria and my grandmother almst des from an allergic reaction to the meds. My grandpa was working in the filed on a tractor, and somehow got his hand caught in a gear or something. mt grandpa knew everyone on the house was sick in bed and also under quarantine, so he ended up cutting part of a finger off so he could free himself...someone had left berries on the porch, so when grandpa came home he asked grandma about them long story short grandpa made a berry pie that night for supper with a HUGE BANDAGED FINGER,,,, My aunt and uncle came along later, and my aunt said she and my uncle lived in a totally different home and were not allowed todo much of anything at school other than attend classes, my grandpa became very nervous and drank heavily... but was never abusive as far as I was told..so it is possible Joan Crawfords chidren had different perceptipns of their mother, but to make up slander and lies for a dollar is a terrible thing!@

I think it's more the case she adopted children and of course anyone can love a baby but once her two oldest children started to have their own personalities she went with the only thing she was ever shown as a child and that was both psychological and physical abuse. She really expected both children to be grateful they were adopted as if they had any choice in the matter.Buying your children things does not make up for any abuse plenty of really well to do families who give children plenty of material things are abusive. She couldn't dominate her two oldest children and they knew her façade and after a certain age neither child ever lived with Joan for ant extended period again .Her two youngest children were it seems very easily dominated by Joan so she was much less abusive to both.I saw an interview with one of her twin daughters and they asked her to describe Joan who had long since past. The first thing she said about her is she was a disciplinarian. That to me doesn't sound like a kind loving mother considering she could have described her as anything on the planet.I do believe both older children were abused when they were growing up Joan was a active alcoholic and having that as a parent is a nightmare alone pr it with a parent who seems to be very narcissistic and you are doomed. Not to mention who tells their children adopted or not why would your kids think I was their grandmother?

Bipolar Narcissists can go into rages that seem absolutely inconceivable to other people, which is an issue because some people straight out don't believe there's abuse in a family because it's "too insane", or they're "usually so nice". It's an adult temper tantrum. It's also pretty common for troubled people with childhood trauma to act out the same kind of abuse on their children, and particularly their first child. We should all be careful about disbelieving victims when we don't know the whole story. Some people came out in defense of Joan, but a lot of them also supported the abuse claims.

I love all of these biographies. I am a big Joan Crawford fan. I think the book may have initially shocked people, but it fizzled and Christina Crawford proved herself to be money hungry loser. She spent all the money she made on the book and movie rights, and has squeezed as much as she could out of her very famous Mother. Christine Crawford has demonstrated in many interviews her intense obvious jealousy and envy of her Mother. I think most people are on to her. Christine’s interview with Larry King in 2000, makes the jealousy and envy she has for her Mother very transparent. I do not think this book did any damage to Joan Crawford other than make younger generations seek out her films. Christine rCrawford was not a beautiful or talented. She was seething with jealousy, and this envy and jealousy turned to hatred. Again Joan persevered

I can’t say she was jealous of her mother….but I just read the book and, my opinion, is that Christina was rather conceited. Did you read the book? Not trying to be rude at all! Just curious. I really try to have an objective viewpoint and use critical thinking skills to formulate opinions. I do think Joan could probably be excessive in her punishments as well as be overly critical and harsh….which could obviously lead to emotional trauma. She was also an alcoholic and probably did not always make rational, fair, or empathic parenting decisions. I just don’t know that I believe Christina’s childhood was so fraught with abuse that justified her book. Yes, it was her right to write it 😉 She did go on to try to sue on or both of her younger sisters for expressing their differing opinion after the book came out. She also lost a lawsuit in which she stated that the twins were not biological twins. So obviously some control issues of her own….and I don’t see any rational reason she would say the twins weren’t twins. Ultimately I can empathize with certain aspects of Joan and Christina. The adoptions were absolutely unethical and adoption trauma is not uncommon-especially in those times. Joan also experienced horrific trauma which surely affected her parenting. I also imagine that she may have truly loved her children and did the best she could at the time. Maybe Christina just never bonded with her and they didn’t form a healthy attachment 🤷‍♀️ either way, I can appreciate and respect everyone’s opinion 🤍

I think Cristina lied about another. Joan was strict, but her daughter had issues. A lot of friends cited un truths Cristina told.

The reason people were concerned if someone was sleeping around is because society valued marriage and children, and the standard was 1 spouse for life. If someone is sleeping around it makes them seem like they don't think pregnancy is likely to happen. It may also give the appearance of selfishness and untrustworthiness, but overall it shows irresponsible behavior.

9:43. It’s claimed that there were many ‘Joan Arden’ entries in that contest, making MGM liable to pay everyone $500 - a fortune in 1925! There was no actress by that name, so that was an expeditious lie. ‘Joan Crawford’ was the next best choice.

There's also one called My Way of Life. Never read it. Not a fan. If you read the book, you can see where CC tries to understand her mother. But JC was such a control freak; they had such a love/hate relationship. It was like CC was torn between hating JC and wanting to be her. Very weird. I saw some of the clothes from her movies, and they were gorgeous. But somehow in photos, she always reminds me of the Evil Queen from Snow White. I don't know why; she just does.

Adjusted for inflation, Joan's movies grossed more than Will Smith's movies. Fact. Christina was an untalented plain Jane who was jealous of Joan.
