I remember being 14 years old back in 1996 and making my mom take me to go see her when she first came out. She was my favorite singer back then. I knew every song on Relish. It's funny that the interview girl asked Joan Osborne if she ever got sick of singing "One of Us" and she said no lol well she was sick of singing it 21 years ago lol I remember the show I went to when I was a kid we were all waiting for that song and it was getting close to the end of the show. Then her guitarist started playing the strings to the song and I remember hearing Joan say "No you guys aren't making me sing this song again!" Lol but she was a trooper and sang it. So the answer is yes. She did get tired of singing it 21 years ago but I'm sure she has a whole new appreciation for it now. I will always love and respect this woman. Such a great person and very talented artist. One of my first favorites as I was beginning to discover music.

"One Of Us" will always be the signature Joan Osbourne song. Summer of 1995, Joan, and Alanis Morrisette's "You Outta Know", were signatures of 1995-1996.

Joan would have won Grammys if not for Alannis.

I love her work. Putting her voice to Dylan's songs is pure magic.

Yeah, not so much. It's a pretty dull record. Maria Muldaur's collection of Dylan songs: Heart of Mine: Love Songs of... is a far superior take on the Bobster's work.

Reference some of the 'Joan, don't get political' comments. Fair point, but the question was put to Joan Osborne rather than her introducing it and she clearly did not indulge it as some artists might. Note also her short comments were mainly objective, difficult when interpreting Dylan. But I agree, it's tiresome to listen to artists exploit a ready made audience, so respect to Joan for not doing it here, and for appearing honest and articulate. Also impressive is her answer to the last question, confirming that some of the most profound and musically rewarding performances are experienced at a simple club level, without the great show productions, or even smaller than that. An exception being the outstanding 'Broken Hearted' with the Funk Brothers.

Not obvious, getting noble like Bonnie Raitt, no? Familiar but not the same (especially Pensacola /Montgomery... )

Her problem has always been that she never established her own genre.

A feminist interpretation of Tangled Up in Blue? Seriously? Perhaps you mean seeing it from a woman's perspective. Curious as whether the pronoun changes. "And now I'm going back again / Got to get to him somehow". Maybe.

Kind of a joke since none of the songs Osborne covers are politically or socially directed ones. As it is, the records is lifeless if competent. Maria Muldaur's cd Heart of Mine: The Love Songs of Bob Dylan is far better. Lively singing and playing and a much better, more interesting set of tunes.

"Made these songs her own?" Let's not get silly. I'm sure this carries a lot of meaning for Joan, but putting out an album of other people's music strikes me as a very boring and egotistical idea. This is best kept in the "personal hobby" space.
@WeTubule5 жыл бұрын
In most genres of music covering songs written by others is commonplace, or even the norm. It's a tribute to the writer. "Making it your own" is the standard phrase for finding your own genuine expression/interpretation of a song. Did Prince or Eric Bazilion not make their versions of "One of Us" their own? Which version should have been kept private, Joan's or Eric's?
