My brother in law, Allan Slutsky, did the arrangement of the song, produced the movie itself, and is the man conducting the band behind Joan. Greatest version of any Motown song I have ever heard. Just saw Joan the other night in Buffalo. She still has it. but she'll never top this performance.

As a professional musician, I could kiss the bass player and the vibraphone player (not to mention all the others, including background vocalists). They give so much to the special sound. And the one person not on stage, who should be, is the arranger. Holy crap, what a killer arrangement. The "dynamics" - loud and soft parts - add a lot of drama. If you're not a musician, you may miss this, but there's an incredible modulation :47 - :49 that would make Bach smile. I'm in awe of everything about this performance - it's one for the ages!

Somehow Joan simultaneously channelled Jimmy Ruffin and Janis Joplin for an awesome interpretation of this classic tear jerker. When I first heard this as kid in the 1960’s I thought it was about losing your girlfriend. I watched the Shadow of Motown show on TV. I grew up with all of the Motown music and knew the Ruffin version of this song. I listened to it again today after hearing Joan’s version. The Ruffin version was a good song, but Joan’s voice and style backed up by the Funk Brothers blew me away. Her voice and the arrangement made me weep. It brings up all of those sweet memories of my youth. Like Joan’s story of listening to the song daily after work in a diner, I have had to listen to Joan sing it nearly every day since I saw that special. Thank you Joan.
