@@mercenary1881 The fact that the Funk Brothers are her backup band is a hint. Agreed that talent knows talent. The Funk Brothers, for those who don't know, were the Motown equivalent to the Wrecking Crew, and played on all the big Motown hits of the time.

My brother in law, Allan Slutsky, did the arrangement of the song, produced the movie itself, and is the man conducting the band behind Joan. Greatest version of any Motown song I have ever heard. Just saw Joan the other night in Buffalo. She still has it. but she'll never top this performance.

@2011littleguy
@2011littleguy 4 жыл бұрын
As a professional musician, I could kiss the bass player and the vibraphone player (not to mention all the others, including background vocalists). They give so much to the special sound. And the one person not on stage, who should be, is the arranger. Holy crap, what a killer arrangement. The "dynamics" - loud and soft parts - add a lot of drama. If you're not a musician, you may miss this, but there's an incredible modulation :47 - :49 that would make Bach smile. I'm in awe of everything about this performance - it's one for the ages!

Somehow Joan simultaneously channelled Jimmy Ruffin and Janis Joplin for an awesome interpretation of this classic tear jerker. When I first heard this as kid in the 1960’s I thought it was about losing your girlfriend. But now as 60-some year old married man of 35 years I realize it is about loosing the love of your life; a loss tinged by anger. Thank God she is still with me.

I was 16 when the original was playing on the radio. I bought the record and played it so much that i drove my dad nuts. I saw this Joan Osborn version on tv last night. A cable station ran the Funk Brothers documentary from 2002. Those guys were amazing. So many hits made great by their sound. With all due respect to them, Joan Osborn's singing put a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. Sorry to go on so long

As of April 4, 2021...882 people have no soul (or hearing). Love the Jimmy Ruffin original, but Joan Osborne absolutely CRUSHES it as part of a stage crammed with talent. Hope that those who only know her from her hit "One Of Us" click on this and realize what she's really all about.

It's not just Joan though. I love her voice. She's spot on throughout the video. But the band is tighter than most I've ever heard. The back up voices nail their performances. Even the sound guys mix the sounds so everything is heard as it should be. This truly is a collective contribution where no one fails or makes an error. This one recording is perfect. While the other songs from this concert are fantastic, there's something about this rendition of "What Becomes of a Broken Heart" that's almost magical in it's perfection.

I watched the Shadow of Motown show on TV. I grew up with all of the Motown music and knew the Ruffin version of this song. I listened to it again today after hearing Joan’s version. The Ruffin version was a good song, but Joan’s voice and style backed up by the Funk Brothers blew me away. Her voice and the arrangement made me weep. It brings up all of those sweet memories of my youth. Like Joan’s story of listening to the song daily after work in a diner, I have had to listen to Joan sing it nearly every day since I saw that special. Thank you Joan.

i'm not sure if joan or any of the musicians on stage realized the moment of musical magic they had just created. everyone on stage was spot on, making the emotions of joan , shine through. music has the power to move people and this powerful rendition of a classic, certainly rose to the occassion. BRAVO

Agreed this is a performance under rated by all but folk like us that were there way back when Jimmy Ruffin did this song in 65. This lady is pretty, soulful and the band, my gosh! I cannot say enough they are absolutely magnificent!! This is a musical work of art, truly a tribute yet unrealized to the man that did this song to begin with!!

This band played on 100s of Motown hits as the house band, people say that they didn't get the recognition they deserved, yes they did, every time a Motown record is played we tap our feet, get up and dance and sing along, millions of us recognize the bass intro by the late James Jamerson on the Temptations " my girl " ( Paul McCartney's hero) thank you for precious memories and thank you Joan, good work

+Faeden Right beside you, Faeden. Puts a lump in my throat every damn time. Everyone on that stage knows their musical potatoes through and through; and their pleasure in queueing up that number again is clear. As much as I enjoyed Jimmy Ruffin's original cover, Joan absolutely killed it. Her version is, for me, the ace and deuce of the "Brokenhearted" canon.
