This is the first interview I've seen with Joan Rivers where she wasn't 'on' the whole time. She is refreshingly honest and even vulnerable. Maybe it was her long and friendly history with Cavett that allowed her to relax and be comfortable.

Part of the secret to why these shows worked so well was that Cavett actually let his guests speak. Today the hosts are constantly interrupting the guest to get in a zinger or another commercial break and it’s just a total mess.

She could afford them. Another lesson in why having a lot of money isn’t always a blessing. When I came into some money I had a neck lift. It turned out fabulously and is still great after six years. I went back to my plastic surgeon about two years later to see what else he could do for me and he said “Plastic surgery can be an addiction for some people. You don’t need anything else done. I’m happy to know you’re satisfied with your procedure but don’t want to see you here again unless you’ve been in an accident that requires it.” I was so grateful for his wise words and never did make another visit to him. If only poor Joan’s surgeon(s) had given her the same advice. Obviously, they loved to take her $$. 😞

I've been on a bit of a Joan Rivers binge here on KZbin and Netflix, and seeing her at this age -- so beautiful -- and then seeing her after so much plastic surgery, it just makes me a bit sad. I'm convinced she would have aged gracefully without any sort of intervention. It was a treat to watch her in a relaxed mood, truly conversational, not feeling the need to pump out jokes. I used to watch Cavett back in the day, but his phony high-brow manner doesn't wear well all these years later.

I first came across Joan in late 1984, she appeared on the BBC's The Bob Monkhouse Show - on British tv. My whole family watched her, we had no idea who she was at the time, and she kept talking about her flat ass and saggy boobs which was like taboo in the UK back then, we were all thinking "what the hell". It was safe to say, that show alone, made Joan a household name overnight. RIP Ms Rivers - you're maybe gone, but you're certainly not forgotten.

Dick Cavett tried SO hard to be a stand-up but lacked something. Joan Rivers, Woody Allen, so many others started in the Village together. There were periods when Joan slept in her car and borrowed a friend's apartment to shower and change for the next show. In an earlier generation, the Marx Bros., Jack Benny, etc. came up together in the brutal world of Vaudeville.
