Her singing at 2:38 is absolutely shocking. In the early years her voice never struck me as a dramatic type, but that pure silvery ringing quality in her higher range is jaw dropping to hear even through my cheap headphones. I’ve never heard anything like it

I worked in the opera wardrobe department,at Covent Garden for nearly 40 years,until I retired.So I had many chances(from the wings) to appreciate Joan''s wonderful talent.Now an anecdote,early in her career she was singing a very difficult aria (with amazingly high top notes)which of course she just tossed of without any effort.She passed me in the wings,and said "Not bad,was I?"What could I say,bu that was Joan,she took her art seriously,but not herself.She and Richard were deeply loved by all in the house. One further thing to mention,don't stand in front of Joan when she was singing,it was like being punched in the chest,so those who say she didn't have a big voice don't know what they are talking about.
@sutherlandfan645 жыл бұрын
She was the high notes, the trills, the staccati, the big voice but also so much more. Such musicianship, it will never be stressed enough. The excitement her voice conveyed was out of this world but it could also convey great pathos and melancholy. The more you listen to her the more you realise that she did act through her voice and that it was not just about the pyrotechnics and the stratospheric notes, particularly in live recordings. She remains and will undoubtedly remain for the longest time, unsurpassed.

Joan often comes under criticism mainly from Maria Callas fans but this is totally unjustified as they were very different artists. Sure Maria could evoke meaning in a way that no other singer has yet matched but conversely Joan at her best is simply breathtaking providing us with the most exciting and a miraculous and effortless technique never equalled. They were both supreme in their own unique way.

What a WONDERFUL video this is!! She truly was STUPENDOUS! And what a beautiful picture of her! She was in such COMMAND of her voice! She could do so many incredible things! Many think that Decca records failed to record her voice properly. Nilsson, too. They didn't have the technology to capture these huge voices. Hearing Sutherland and Nilsson in the house was much more thrilling than recordings.
@jondavwal132 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just that her voice was huge in the house. It just felt like it filled every open space it could find and then sat on your shoulder while she sang into your ear. It was always audible over everybody else and anything else but in a weirdly comfortable way. I've never heard any other voice in the theater that had the same effect.

I don't know. There are many who put emphasis on how she did have great expression and pathos in her singing. To me, what excites me about her is the voice as a vocal phenomenon. She had the technical ability to put her naturally given voice to utterly perfect use. The resonance, projection, stamina, volume, agility, breath support, breath control, vocal control, intonation, relaxation, any technical and vocal feature was supreme with her. And hands down. Her high range was legendary. The combination of piercing yet beautiful brilliance, agility, precision and gigantic resonance and volume was unique. What wasn't her absolute strength, to my sensation, was diction (becoming increasingly mushy at least from the late 60s), authentic drama and her lower range. That was more a strength of a singer like callas. But sutherland around 1960, +/- 2 years, was a vocal miracle. Just like callas around 1950. Together with Schwarzkopf they make the three defining sopranos of the second half of the 20th century to me. And again, hands down. Schwarzkopf had the most beautiful singing voice ever. True lyrical voice.
@Sutherland22 жыл бұрын
Joan worked very hard to improve her diction and it did get better in the 70s and 80s. The accusation of poor diction is a very tired old saw. Betty Blackhead was a great singer, too, but her VOICE will never rank among the greats. But she did have good diction.
@schneevongestern98982 жыл бұрын
@@Sutherland2 in the end i do not care too much about diction. it is about the sound. Some singers could only sing vocalises and i still would be listening to them all the time.
