John Hammond started me on my journey as an avocational Blues musician and folklorist. I heard this album in 1963 and realized the music had some connection to Rock'n Roll. In the early 1970s I attended the Mariposa Folk Festivals on the Toronto Islands. John played several of those Festivals and his playing, singing, and stage presence tore me all upside down. I was now hearing the connection between Robert Johnson and the Heavy Rock of Faces, Jeff Beck Group, Cream, and Led Zep. The percussive bass up front; the West African syncopation; the change of speed slower to faster; the guitar playing African notes impossibly lost between the keys of a European piano; using the African Diddley Bow technique. In the late '70s I saw John at a bar in Richmond Virginia. He coached me on how to fix the buzz in the biscuit of my newly-acquired '36 National Duolian. I've read the biography and autobiography of his father...fascinating stories about the development of uniquely USAmerican music. I've seen John perform many times since those '60s and 70s gigs. And recall being much impressed by the message of monogamous partnership on his guitar case in the 1990s, "John and Marla Hammond". I sincerely hope John is happy and well, and that he and Marla are enjoying each other. Sometime around 2000 - 2010 I asked John if he would write his autobiography. He bowed his head, laughed humbly and said, "Not now. It's way too early. But maybe..." Dear John, I believe the time is now. Please. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

I first caught on to Hammond when I was a teenager in the 60s, when I picked up “Blues at Newport ‘63.” He made me sit bolt upright staring at the speakers. I learned guitar by listening to that album.

I first saw John Hammond in 1969 at the Virginia Theater in Alexandria, Va. My older brother took my twin brother and Myself to see electric Hot Tuna and Hammond warmed up. I was 14 years old. I have seen him play with the Night Hawks and I have seen him every year or two for the rest of my life. He was my introduction to country blues. What a fantastic performer.

The only performer I got an autograph from. He autographed two album covers, Source Point and I’m Satisfied the two Columbia albums. Required reading is his father’s biography.
