@Juliana Silva The secret for peaking Spanish is you have to have all muscles in your mouth strung like ready to sprint. Portuguese is spoken with a relaxed mouth, kind of like you went to the dentist and got a shot of anesthesia. Spanish requires everything to sound like you're hammering things, like your mouth is a wooden springboard. Rigid and dry. Kind of like German. Of course I'm Chilean so I don't follow this rule, but it's what I do when I want to get myself understood by foreigners despite my Chilean accent.

I had a full conversation with my Uber driver. She spoke Portuguese and I spoke Spanish. It was great!! A full hour ride from the airport to my house! We spoke very slowly and when we didn’t understand one word would say synonyms until we were on the same page. It was great!!

Married to a Brazilian here! 🙌 🇧🇷. What confuses me? 1. Conosco. In Spanish it means 'to know,' in Portuguese= 'with us.' 2. The way Brazilians use 'a gente' to mean 'us'- drives me crazy because my mind wants to think 'the people.' 3. The way Brazilians insert the word 'mesmo' into sentences- I still don't get why it's used. Very different from Spanish! 4. Avó vs avô (grandma vs grandpa). To me they sound the same, I can't get the difference in pronunciation. 😂 5. côco vs cocó (poop vs coconut). I'm always scared I'll mess that one up! 😂😂😂 The worst mistake I ever made? I tried to buy a 'camisinha' (little shirt literally). It actually means condom, I learned that the hard way! 😂😂😱

I'm from the US currently living in Rio, Spanish is my second language, Portuguese my third, and I couldn't agree more with everything said here!! 😂😂 The two languages are no doubt extremely similar, but I have to be super careful I know what I'm saying and not just relying on my Spanish when I speak Portuguese...for example I've made the awkward mistake of using "molestar" (Spanish: to annoy, Portuguese: to MOLEST) instead of "perturbar" !! "Eu não gosto dele, me molesta muito.." whoops 😬 not to mention the plethora of conjunctions in Portuguese..and don't even get me started on the subjunctive! Portuguese is definitely the harder language

I'm from Venezuela and I've been living in Brazil for 3 years, already know how to pronounce every vowel with the (~) on top (it took me a while). I still don't know the fucking difference between the sound of Avó and Avô (que es la misma vaina que abuela y abuelo en español, pero aquí lo quisieron complicar puej), also in spanish we don't pronounce the V and B sounds correctly!!! It's basically the same sh*t for us!!! In Portuguese that's is so f*cking important. There are some words that pronounced incorrectly can mean a total different thing, like when you say Casa but you don't make the f*cking "S" sound correctly, you might be saying that you're going for a HUNT.... Seriously WTF!!! (the correct sound of that S in CASA, is pretty much like the sound of a f*cking mosquito close to your ear). Ya vi que venden cucas en el mercado y casi me meo de la risa, y que la que cantaba aquella Música "ilari-lari-je, jo jo-jo-jo" era la famosa XUXA, solo que nunca nos los dijeron y yo juraba que esa verga era Nubeluz. Vaso es donde pones las plantas, copo es vaso, copa (donde bebes vino) se dice "taça", y a la taza de nosotros pa' beber café aquí le dicen Xícara, ahh y nunca digas que estás llena de picaduras (porque te jodieron los mosquitos), ni llames a la gente vagabunda por jodedera. OMG, I love your comment! But the vaso/copa/taza thing hits us bad too! So many false cognates!!! And oh, so many tongue twirls, why so many?! But I recognize, portuguese might just be one of the most hard languages to learn in the world. I mean, probably you've been learning the paulista brazilian portuguese, but dude, this country is so big there are words we ourselves don't even know, understand or get from other parts, and a hell lot more accents (like, the vocal accents, not the signs) which may sometimes get in the middle of understanding some shit.

As a native Spanish speak, I actually find Portuguese from Portugal easier to understand because I feel their accent is "softer" in a way, I feel they pronounce "better" (which makes sense since they're in the peninsula, therefore close to Spain), like they pronounce their letters more. As for Brazil, I find their accent much more difficult to understand, you hear those "chis" (like igualmente) Joana was talking about and those Ls sounding like Us, it's crazy...

@@SuperGirlLucy honestly it's a bit odd for you to say such thing as Portuguese people tend to pronounce the vowels with the back of their mouths, a bit more throaty, hence the common interpretation (by foreigners) that portuguese PT sounds a bit slavic. Portuguese BR is a lot (and I mean A LOT) heavier when it comes to emphasising the vowels, specially in the northern regions (where I come from). Btw the closest you can actually get to a Spanish cadence / rhythm / accent in Brazil is in the south, where they roll the R letter a lot more, like a Spanish speaker does.

I'm from Mexico and I actually understand better Portuguese accent than Brazilian. I think it depends more on where in the Hispanic world are you coming from so you will find one or the other easier based on your own accent.

Joanna, yo soy de Galicia, una region en el noroeste de España. El caso es que galicia está justo al norte de Portugal y tenemos una lengua llamada gallego que suena como una mezcla de español y portugués. El gallego y el portugués nacieron ambas de la misma lengua, el gallego-portugues, y fueron evolucionando de formas separadas dando lugar a dos lenguas que si bien se parecen muchisimo (algunos expertos incluso las consideran como dos dialectos de una misma lengua) tienen sus diferencias. Podrias dedicar algún video a hablar del tema.

But if you want to know the formal way, is Você. But if you are talking with a authority you should use sir(Senhor or Senhora), but even authorities will understand if you don't. But if you go to Portugal always use Tu for informal, will sound weird to them if you use você(too formal for them) or cê(they never use this one).

I'm Costa Rican so I speak Spanish, I was raised in NYC so my English is native and I'm married to a Brazilian, who ONLY speaks Portuguese. We've been together for 4 years now but when we first met OMG! translator app for everything! I learned Portuguese by asking André literally everything and jotting it down on a notepad . My most used phrase was "Como se fala?" meaning "How do you say?" as I pointed to an object. Here's what still kills me about Portuguese vrs Spanish, GENDER. Some examples like, "arbol" is feminine in Portuguese, "a árvore" . "Mensaje" is "a mensagem", " el Lente" is "a lente", " el color" is " a cor" - - - só on and so forth! I swear Im always messing up cuz it's all the contrary!

As a French/Argentine who lived in Brazil as a child, this was very entertaining to watch. I did not realise how much French helped to learn Portuguese, to understand the notion of 2 letters = 1 sound. Portuguese from Portugal might be easier to understand for Joanna because the Rs and Ts are close to Spanish, but it's not as sexy imho. Best accent is Santa Catarina, 'it's like buttah'.

H - Alone, before a vowel, there is no sound in both languages, but in Portuguese it is also used after L and N. I - The same J - In both laguage there are 2 sounds, but one of those sounds are different between the languages. K - The same (not so much used) L - The same in general, but different when it's in the end of a word or syllable in Portuguese. LH - Only in Portuguese. LL - Only in Spanish. M -The same in general, but different when it's in the end of a word in Portuguese. N - The same. But different when it's in the end of a word in Portuguese follow the M rule. Ñ - Only in Spanish. Equivalent to NH in Portuguese. NH - Only in Portuguese. Equivalent to Ñ in Spanish. O - 2 sounds (or 3) in Portuguese, 1 in Spanish P - The same in general, but different when it's in the end of a word in Portuguese. Q - The same. QU - 2 sounds in Portuguese, 1 in Spanish R - 2 sounds in Portuguese, 1 in Spanish RR - Different sound. S - 2 sounds in Portuguese, 1 in Spanish SS - Only in Portuguese. T - Complex to explain. More it has more sounds in Portuguese than in Spanish. U - The same V - Different sound. In most Spanish speakers country it can sound like B, in Portuguese it has a different sound like the V in English. W - Not used too much in both languages. 2 sounds in Portuguese, 1 in Spanish X - 4 sounds in Portuguese, 1 (or 2) in Spanish Y - Not used too much in Portuguese, it sounds like a normal "i". It has different sounds in Spanish depending on the accent. Z - Different sound. In most Spanish speakers country it can sound like S (except Spain), in Portuguese it has a different sound like the Z in English. I'm not counting the many different regional variations, just talking about a more generic "standard way" to pronounce. I'm not a teacher, it was just a basic generalization :)

European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese sound very different though. There's no 'tshi' sound at the end of words in European Portuguese. In fact, an interesting thing about European Portuguese is that along with Russian and Slavic languages it is a stress-timed language and their rhythms actual sound similar. The fact that Portuguese uses the sound “sh” a lot (not tshi and not at the end of words) also contributes to the similarity to Russian. In fact, most Slavic languages are stress-timed and this is the main reason why European Portuguese sounds like a Slavic language. Cheers from Portugal.

(hopefully this will get in Joanna responds) FUN FACT: There are many many words in portuguese that are similiar to words in spanish but mean another thing completely for example: "Esquisito" isn't something fancy or tasty, it's something bizarre and weird. So, saying "your food is esquisita" is basically saying "your food is bizarre"; "Vaso" looks and sounds like cup, right? wrong. It can be a vase or a toilet (vaso sanitário); "ruiva" is similar tu "rubia" wouldn't you say? Well, ruiva means redhead, and loira means blonde; and one of my favorites but that only really counts in spanish from Argentina I think: gato. In Argentina we use "gato" as an insult or pejorative word, in Brazil someone who is really "gato" is really pretty or hot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the more you know ☆

And yes, by the logic, quebec is supposed to be part of it too haha but, usually it's considered only countries from mexico to the south america. I don't know exactly the reason why for that, i think it's because Quebec is a province and not a country, which canada's majority is anglophone, so it can't be considered the whole canada as latin, but anyway, quebec is in latin america because it can't be part of anglo-saxon america. I am a native Portuguese speaker, and I live in Mexico for almost two years. I have to tell you that the HARDEST words to speak are those with G, J and R together in the same word: Registro, Rogélio, Jorge... and the RR: Monterrey, Carro, Correr... we have basically the same words for Portuguese, but not with these pronunciations. Oh, and don't forget the Mayan or Asteka words like Teotihuacan, xoloitzcuintle, Quetzalcoatl... impossible to pronounce without any practice hahaha But anyways, I love speaking Spanish and I love my "weird" accent (:

So, add another level to this - I'm an interpreter for a hospital (Spanish-English), and sometimes when we get Portuguese speaking patients, they've called me over to interpret for them. And the patients understand me, but I feel like I'm trying to listen to someone talking underwater. As Portuguese I never felt any problem with Italian and I can say that almost all Italians that I met understood me as well. We have several accents in Portugal in the south the vowels are pronounced more open like in Brazil, but I agree that the accent from Lisbon the main one sounds like russian and can be dificult to understand the first time if you are not used to it. They used to pronounce them but they stopped doing that but they didn't change the spelling. Also, French is an etymological language meaning that they want words coming from Latin/Greek to look similarly to the words in these languages. Hence why "ph" is pronounced like a "f".

Hi, Joanna! Spanish is my second language. When I began studying Portuguese in 2016, it was a big challenge for me. I bought so many books in Portuguese and I bought so many movies with the audio in Portuguese. I live in South Florida and a Brazilian bakery opened close to where I work in 2016. Since then, I have been going there to have conversations with the Brazilian employees of the Brazilian bakery. In 2018, a Brazilian radio station called Nossa Radio, 1400 a.m., aired and I have been listening to it. Today, I can read, write, and listen to Portuguese. Just like the guitar, you have to practice. Speaking 3 languages is not easy, but it is worth it. Hablar tres idiomas no es fácil, pero vale la pena. "Barata" can mean "cheap" in Portuguese as well. For example, "this purse was very cheap" would be "essa bolsa foi muito barata". So, I mean, she got one correctly kk
