always thought of this like making a bunch of BUTTON HOLES - I saw this technique on one of those PBS knitting shows years ago but they made huge braids and knitted the braids one by one braiding them together at the end - I like your way best I think

Hoje sou eu quem dá a dica., já fiz um gorro com esta técnica de tranças no trico , a dica é quando pegar a primeira alça para trançar dê uma torcida pra que não fique aberta...... If you want it wider, add stitches on the sides and in the center. So, instead of having 8/16/8 you can do 10,/20/10. Or use thicker yarn and larger needles.
