@@mickeymack9627 so I got laid off in late March and I traveled for like 2 weeks in April. When I got back I started applying every day did some interviews. May I started the interviewing process for the job I have now which was like 5 rounds of interview. I got a job offer in mid June and started work mid July

You should continuosly update/tweak your resume and linkedin profile until you get an offer, coming from someone who took a gap year and has been struggling to get back into the work force. I applied to 150+ jobs and got 2 interviews, rewrote my resume, applied to another 150 jobs, and got 10 interviews. I think it made a difference.

Agreed here too! Same condition too, took a gap year, tech industry tanked, been struggling to find a role still since. Been getting more interviews every time i would revise my resume to gear it towards the position specifically, especially if that job had a referral and said referral would glance over my resume first before submitting. Definitely recommend being open to happen multiple versions and organizing it accordingly.

You are so right about the gap in the resume. I was a contractor where my 2 year contract ended and I was lucky to be able to take a couple months break. But when I started interviewing one of the hiring managers kind of asked me about the gap in my resume in a shaming way. It made him look uneducated, but it did made me feel ashamed that I wasn't working at the time. FIRE movement didn't exist back then, lol. At least I didn't lie about the time off. Now, it's more acceptable to take a break, thank goodness. Keep winning Bukola

I was laid off at the end of May and was able to find a job a few weeks ago. Actually I got 2 offers. It was brutal in June. I went to a lot of interviews and it was just insane. The most heart breaking was me actually making it through 4 rounds only to get rejected after waiting for 3 weeks. Anyway I know a few other people who have got work recently as well. So things an be turning around. Just an FYI I am a senior level resource. I have 15 years dev experience. I doubt it should take you 3-6 months. But always temper your expectations. I would say they may hire a bit for the next few months and then probably just lock down hiring until the election (assuming you're still in the USA). And I can see them being very stingy with hiring from November till the end of year. Depending on who wins things may pick back up in January 2025

I don't know why we always have this idea of taking breaks, life really doesn't stop happening, taking breaks often just means you are doing something else. If you don't keep up to date with your current skillset, you start to lose it, this is especially true in the IT industry. Life doesn't really have breaks where there are periods you can hibernate in a cave somewhere on the side of a mountain for a year or years, doesn't really happen.

If you need years, have a sit down with your manager and HR about taking a hiatus and try to secure a return. Don't burn your career. Its one of my personal biggest regrets.
