The "reimagining" of Hellraiser caused a bit of online controversy. How could you touch a horror classic and do it better? But people were quick to point out that the story of the new Hellraiser is nothing like the original or that of the novella written by Clive Barker. The Cotton family is not involved here, no Kirsty, no Julia, no Frank. Hellraiser 2022 was a different beast. So today, let's dig into what exactly happened.

I didn't like some of the rules. Like you can open the box but dodge the blade and stab someone and they get taken. The thing that made the original 2 so interesting was "its not hands but desire" bit that called them. You had to want to open the box, to desire to open it. Made the cenobites more grey, the 2022 movie just makes them wierd looking killers. Not really interesting.

I couldn't get all the way into this movie because I thought all of the protagonists were unlikeable. I would have liked it better if it was centered around Pinhead and Voight. Voight was a formidable antagonist and the new Pinhead was really good.

I saw this the other day. I think the assessment here is fair. I dont think the characters were particularly well-written and the actors were not given enough to do or say. Just people shouting 'I don't know! I don't know!' at each other. The designs of the Cenobytes was really nice put they didnt have enough to do to carry the film. A bit dull all in all. Not enough dramatic forward motion and it just wasn't weird enough.

I’ve been a hardcore fan of Hellraiser since I was a lad. Loved the first 5 movies, read the novella multiple times and got as many of the comics as I could find. And I had been waiting for this movie since it was announced as a remake in 2006. And I love it. Can’t put ‘22 Hellraiser and Clayton above the original and Bradley. But, it’s a damn close second place.

Hellraiser 2023 was Fine…. I give it a pass because to me it felt like a Sequel with another Order of the Ghash which the comics went into often. I dug it and felt more sequels with other Cenobite Clans would he a welcome thing nowadays. Pinhead was one of many and more connected to the Cotton family. want more hellraiser movies. bit this one was good in some places and felt rushed or slap dash in others. with that said, would enjoy a follow up

My favorite kill was the Priestess/Pinhead and her chains. When she removed a needle and drove it slowly through the girls vocal chords as she screamed? The way you could hear the scream change as the vocal chords tore. Man. That was different.

I found it to be lacking in gore kills and the supernatural element's i found evil dead remake 2013 done a much much better in all that department. Like you said it did had some good ideas in it but didn't really do much with it as the story dragged out to much and that's where it needed more kills with more gore effects. This film was a better attempt for a more modern take of the franche but it had less horror for me and i still find hellbound 1988 being the best off all of them but outdated effect for today and this new film should of been a triumph and over throne the first 2 films in the making. It couldn't do that for me why i was disappointed with this as i was expecting a higher level budget film and practical effect i did enjoy watching it but no where near what i wanted it to be. Insidious 1 and 2 along with The conjuring 1 and 2 had a much better level of eeriness scary moment along with some really good jump scares that wasn't dont cheaply for the sake of them and that's what made them film so great where Hellraiser 2022 lack so much of it within the film horror aspect as well

I love Lord of Illusions. Always been a fan of Scott Bakula. Nix was a great character. I also loved the cult and desert location. There's just so much going on in that film. When I was a teenager I'd often watch In the Mouth of Madness and Lord of Illusions as a double feature.

I came into Hellraiser 2022 with an open but hopeful mindset, and I left feeling thrilled by Jamie Clayton's performance but underwhelmed by everything else. IMO, what the original Hellraiser has, and the reboot does not, is a sense of profound transgressiveness. I understand why the costumers couldn't use BDSM gear for the 2022 cenobites, and I think having them dress in their own skin was a good substitute - but that alone doesn't make the cenobites feel transgressive. Clayton added the necessary touch through sheer talent, but even she was hampered by a bland script that barely gave her a chance to shock up with the concept of a "hell priest." The other cenobites had even less to do, and the humans were mostly cannon fodder, so that left Hellraiser 2022 as nothing but a standard slice-and-dice horror flick with a pedigree. That being said, since Clayton *was* so good, and since Odessa A'Zion brought so much warmth to her role, I'd love to see them return in a better-written sequel.

Also, speak for yourself, I liked Riley and found her to be very relatable. Granted, I’m an alcoholic and I can confirm that the addiction aspects were spot on. Especially that night fight when she gets kicked out.

It was fine. I appreciated the changes to the Cenobite design, the flayed corpse look was creepy, like how we peel back the skin when we tack insects of frogs to a board for study or observation. I liked all the human characters, even liked the inevitable betrayal. I did not like how complicated the box itself became. That wasn't supposed to be the point. I get it. I do. It was an easy way to add to the kill count and give us what amounts to a count down. I still prefer the first two movies, but if this brings in a new generation of fans, they have such sights to see.

I did really like Hellrasier 2022. I’ve watched it 3 times now but for me, it will never surpass the Clive Barker’s original masterpiece. I just really liked to idea of the new Box. I loved seeing the labyrinth again and the actual look of the cenobites, and even the new Pinhead. She did a brilliant job, they all did. But yeah, I know this will sound like fan boy slop but she weren’t no Doug Bradley. He just have a intimidating performance on screen for me. The characters though? I’d have to say weren’t really all that interesting, probably the occult leader and the main female protagonist. But overall, great horror film. Just wish also they went full on with the gore and not cut away so much. That did piss me off a bit.

I'm gonna say I mostly agree with you- the only difference I'd do in ranking is 2, 1, reboot, 3. While #3 was a lot of fun, the quality of the reboot was better. I, too, liked 1 & 2, mostly because the cenobites had more colorful personalities and struck me as more realistic. Other than that, I felt the reboot and the original 2 were on par with each other.

it sucked and i watched it twice. i really wanted to like it, i didn't. if you'd super-cut all the good parts/ideas, you'd have less than 5 minutes. poor plot, cheap looking fx, forgettable music, ridiculous/hilarious cenobite concepts and behavior. overall i wouldn't recommend it and i'd rather re-watch 3 or 4 than this one.

All of the normal human characters i couldn't stand, especially the lead girl. Atrocious and unlikeable. Cenobites felt tame but still effective and serviceable. It was a chore to sit through but still when it was over, I liked some of the ideas and the setup of the configuration many forms, ending with lament.

The film is phenomenally good looking, dark and artistically designed The gore doesn’t disappoint and the makeup effects for the Cenobites are top-notch, the filmmakers go all out with the many designs of body mutilation and sadistic beauty Fans will love the callbacks to the older film from Christopher Young’s score to one or two lines but also love the expansion on the mythology of this world, ties the lore both existing and fresh together Jamie Clayton makes for an interesting new take on Pinhead and director David Bruckner manages to bring some of the flair back that previous installments lacked so heavily Even Ben Lovett’s score differentiates itself to be its own thing This is a large cast of unknowns and it’s 2 hours beyond its length making it feel bloated at times with some story elements being dropped and the supporting characters aren’t really fleshed out so to speak but fans will be delighted the franchise gets back to its roots exploring the darker side of human curiosity, desire, and sick need for pain Still keeps to the core thing of psychosexual nature of eroticism and punishment Enough is a myth maybe, gifts cannot be ungiven, some rewards aren’t worth the suffering A great revival with colder cinematography, grotesque yet impressive makeup work, and manages to evoke Barker’s original novella adaptation with careful attention to detail and respect It also surprisingly acts an an allegory for chaos and the torment of addiction seeing A’Zion as a recovering addict choosing the path not weighing so heavily giving her deep human desperation ‘Hellraiser’ fans rejoice…the Cenobites are back on top form

I have two MAJOR complaints about this. Well, three, actually. 1. It is filmed TOO DARKLY. It's nearly impossible to see anything most of the time. 2. It is roughly an hour too long. The worst thing a director can do is bore the audience, that that is done here. 3. NONE of the characters are even remotely likeable. There is no one to root for I honestly couldn't have cared less if the protagonist lived or died, unlike Kirsty from the original. That said, I absolutely have to give major props for the brilliant reimagining of the Cenobites. They were truly horrifying--upsetting, even.

Several things: 1. This movie includes from HELL ON EARTH some dialogues while from BLOODLINE the whole concept to end the story. So they were respectful to all the movies that were on theaters. Not to mention that the protagonist clearly looks and acts just as Kirsty. 2. I loved that they decided to make this. I never understood why remake the original since, with the exception of Kirsty being a friend of Larry and in love with him it was made his daugther, everything else was a direct adaptation of the story. 3. The only thing that bothers me is that the movie is too long for its content. It takes forever to finally starts moving. 4. The movie NEEDS to be released on physical media. Is there is something that was clearly shown by Disney these past days is that if you don´t get a physical copy the content is removed from their streaming services to never be available again.

Also has a lot of similarities to the original novella (if you haven't read the Hellbound Heart - you certainly should). Overall i gave it a B+.

I liked this one. It’s the best since the original and stands up great with contemporary horror films. The creature design and direction are great. The story is serviceable though it has a bit of a slasher vibe with the cenobites carving through kids one by one. The motivations of the cenobites are off from the original lore, the cenobites seem less interested in sharing their form of pleasure and more with being sacrificed any ol’ body that you will to the box.

I didn't mind it it's definitely not for all the fans but I really appreciate the effort put into the lore and it feels like 2 in some scenes and that being my favourite one that's a great feeling dreamlike and fantastically. I was originally not a fan of the female pinhead but I came around and it's a nice change. The way they play with their prey in this movie is pretty reminiscent of the cenobites of 2 where they have a point a purpose and a form of "morality" I really enjoyed that.

For me, the first will always be the best, Hellworld is okay, it's not the best, but it's interesting, and the 2022 remake is pretty good. Judgment would've been better as a short film with only the parts taking place in hell being there, none of the stupid stuff that we had thrown into the mix, especially turning Pinhead human again for killing and angel...what the f**k? For killing a f**king angel!

What I didn’t like was the new design of the Cenobites. They looked too cartoonish, and I didn’t understand the running zombie-type movement. It felt out of place. I liked the performance of the new Pinhead and the voice, which was better than I expected. I could argue that the BDSM and leather elements felt missing, but that’s probably because I’m so attached to the first two movies. Most of all, there was nothing like Clive Barker’s ability to blend horror and sensual poetry, creating an allmost deceptive mirage of sensory and verbal cues. If you’ve ever read his book The Hellbound Heart, you know what I’m talking about. Especially today, when we have the technology and effects to almost capture the torment of Frank with a good enough screenplay and direction this should have been better. But overall its not bad by any means more of a lost opportunity. This was indeed a good sequel compared to most of the other subpar releases over the years, but it felt more like a fan-made retelling without the dark charm.

Every time they make Hellraiser it’s complete garbage. It’s a complete waste. It is because in the making of the 1980s Hellraiser was legendary in the making, and it was extremely gruesome. Sense 2014 and 2024 it sucks and a waste of air. The people who make hair raiser now can’t even get pinhead right especially the Cinna bites. as pinhead said, you’re suffering will be legendary even in hell. rip 🪦 Hellraiser. The company in the crew can’t even make a hair raiser sequel. back in the 80s Hellraiser was the best movie ever but now since this year in the past few years, it belongs in the library. 📚

I think this is a decent horror film considered on its own. But as a Hellraiser remake, it's awful. Starting with the aesthetics. This movie looks way too polished, hell, even the gore looks kind of clean. Miles away from the dirtiness the original one had. Then the cenobites, they look terrible. More alien-like than sadomasochistic demons-like. Again, the original nailed with the design of the monsters better than this movie could ever dream of. Then the score, average at best except for the parts they borrowed from Christopher Young's original score. The nature of the lament is also changed in a poor way. Now whoever gets hurt by the damn thing is taken???WTF???The original one has to be opened by desire and the cenobites looked for those who desired it to be opened, even when the puzzle was solved by someone else. The only saving grace is the actress playing Pinhead but even that is kind of disputable , because under all that makeup she seems to be smiling at times, unlike the menacing seriousness of Bradley's performance. In short, another forgettable Hellraiser movie. They lost the way at Inferno. I rather reading the comics that are actually awesome and a worthy continuation of the first movies

I like both versions very much. I was impressed by the lead, Odessa A'zion. She reminds me of her mom, whom I'm always entertained by.
