@@mattf9076 I had a teacher in junior high ala 8th grade in the 1988-89 school year until May who asked me why I was late everyday and I pulled a Jeff Spicoli "I don't know" and she chewed my ass out in front of the class and sent me to the principal and the principal said "You have a real attitude problem! You show up late one more time you will be retained for another year!!!" and she gave me two weeks detention. How my grades managed to stay good I wish I knew but I learned a lesson because both the teacher I had plus the pricipal had to have a conference with my mom and dad. My mom and dad chewed me out when I got home but it wasn't as bad as it could've been because they had no love for the teacher I had and knew how I felt about her. Principal was more a bitch though

Spicolli vs. Mr Hand is so fantastic. It is hilarious, but there is also real emotion and feelings in the battle. Look at their eyes. There is a lot going on in their hearts within this battle. It really adds so much to the movie. I saw it when it came out and I think my entire school saw it too- everyone was talking about it for months afterward.

Ray Walston actually hated him in real life. The reason is because Sean was doing Method Acting stuff behind the scenes to terrorize him. The Director, Amy Heckerling, said Ray complained about Sean to her that he was being unprofessional, but the problem was Ray came from the "old-school" and didn't understand Method Acting and didn't realize Sean was creating an environment that would help their scenes together.

@@TheKitchenerLeslie Golden info, yes and I'm grateful to be able to read it, but I have a hard time with the contention that Ray didn't understand Method Acting as he was very active in theatre and film during the 1950's. The golden age of Method when everyone and his brother was experimenting with it, thanks to Brando, Clift, Dean and directors like Kazan. Even if he didn't practice it, he must have had exposure to it.

The fact that Sean Penn can deliver an incredible campy performance of a high school stoner AND have written and directed such an amazing, acclaimed film like 'The Indian Runner' (and that, as his directorial debut) speaks volumes as to his talent. Regardless of whether you like his politics or not, this man is worthy of respect.

When you know who his parents were, you'll realize why he's such a scumbag. You can be talented and be a scumbag Communist, but if you come from Communist parents in the business, you're going to be helped along in your career and given every opportunity to spout your destructive propaganda if it helps The State. The same people who funded Hitler are still in control. "General" Sean Penn is a mere puppet.

I had a teacher like him. 10th grade, Geometry. I owe that man a lot. He was an officer in the Navy for 19 years, so he was very organized and focused. He was tough, but you could tell that he genuinely cared about his students. He is one of the best teachers I ever had. And on top of that, I was one of those care-free class clowns, so I was a bit of an obstacle. However, it didn't stop him from getting his job done. Eventually I started going to extra help for the class during lunch, where he would re teach a whole lesson to me if I misunderstood it. I ended up passing that class with flying colors. He was great, and a rare find in the modern educational system. God bless him.

People don't realize how important Spicoli was to American pop culture. The entire "surfer-stoner" valley-boy archetype started with him. You wouldn't have Bill & Ted, Michelangelo, Ed from Goodburger, or countless other 80's/90's American party dudes without Jeff's dumb ass rolling out a hotboxed van. And the craziest part, looking back, is that it worked because Penn played him with 100% sincerity. He's not a parody. When Spicoli has to watch other people eat his pizza, for some insane reason, Penn makes sure that you genuinely feel his sense of loss. People treat it as a dumb comedic role, but the guy had great acting chops, even then.

@@guyvandermire4146 Actually, I DIDN'T know that. I was just responding to the OP's post, and what type of acting that requires. If Penn did that, and I have no reason to doubt the OP, then that's pretty cool. Better than someone, say, Daniel Day-Lewis in either "Gangs of New York", or 'There Will Be Blood" (Day-Lewis is KNOWN for his method acting, with insane tales by his co-stars and others), or Heath Ledger in Batman: the Dark Knight, where both actors went down some really dark roads, with Ledger actually succumbing to his madness and mania. I'm sure the madness probably pushed him to the drugs. I don't think Ledger ever had drug use in his background, prior. So better that Penn took a "happier" (or "chill") take on things. 😀

Yeah, but that is real life too. I had a crush the early part of freshman year, and her name was McDonald. I don't think she noticed me however. Come senior year, she was married and sitting right beside me. But you get four people, when you call three, if like in this class, two people share the same name. A cheerleader in the front row had a thing about me, and would glance back at times, and her name was McDonald as well. Interestingly enough, I got a call some years back for one of our reunions, and it was the freshman crush McDonald girl (a cheerleader too), and she left a message, including her hyphened name about the reunion. Back in high school, I didn't know whom she married, but the name she left on the answering machine, was the name of a football player who sat beside the other McDonald girl (they weren't sisters) in that class. He seemed like a really cool guy, but as we sat in different parts of the class, we never got to talking.

Haha the teacher was all like, “what do you think you’re doing having pizza delivered on my time?!” Stoner dude was like, “well, since I am here too, it’s really our time.” The teacher said, “you’re right. It is our time.” Then he took the freshly delivered pizza away from stoner dude and offered it to the rest of the class, making sure that stoner dude did not get any of it. The teacher took the last slice for himself and ate it right in front of stoner dude. It was real funny. 🍕

that wonderful pause at 5:22 was the result of editing. according to the director, Amy Heckerling, there was no actual pause between the end of mr. hand's question and spicoli's response. penn responded immediately. but during editing they decided to mute hand's dialogue, while keeping it entirely on ray walston's close up. so, when penn appears to be taking a few seconds to think about how to respond, he's actually just waiting for walston to deliver his line. aahhh, the magic of editing. it helped make sean penn a STAR!

So weird, I was Spicoli's age as depicted in the film when this movie was released to theaters. Now I am almost as old as Mr Hand.

Who didn’t know a spicolli in high school. He is a classic. Stoned every day in high school. I still know a few of them, didn’t amount to much but didn’t amount to bad either, still doing what hey want on their terms so who is wrong.

They missed the whole discussion with Mr. Hand in Spicoli's bedroom. That was the best when he said: "So what Jefferson was saying was 'Hey! You know, we left this England place because it was bogus. So if we don't get some cool rules ourselves, pronto, we'll just be bogus too. ' Yeah?"
