I forgot this existed, to be honest. It ended up being rather mediocre, which is the curse of the video game adaptation. Even some of the more popular ones (Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat) tend to have mediocre to bad professional reviews, and are just popular with fans for the kitsch value, action, or whatever the case may be. There is always some factor involved that tends to suck the spirit or fun out of whatever property is involved. Either oblivious higher-ups who have no idea about how the games are, or directors and/or writers that don't know or care much about the the game(s). And this is on top of the odds against a movie being a real success in the first place. Reasonable executives and capable people involved in the actual production doesn't necessarily translate into something particularly good. Sometimes the elements just don't come together very well.

@ThatSoddingGamer2 жыл бұрын
@@mozartcastellanosGK Yes, actually, we can criticize it. Just because you like it and might think it is beyond reproach, doesn't mean everyone else has to agree with your view. They chose to make this movie, to adapt a video game into this format, and released it with the intention of making money. Just like with any piece of creative work released, it's going to be subject to critique. I personally thought it turned into a forgettable film at best, to the point I actually forgot it existed as I mentioned in my first comment. It probably would have adapted better to a TV show or miniseries, but they didn't go that direction so it's a moot point. If you enjoyed it, more power to you, but I'm/we're hardly in the minority in thinking they didn't do a particularly good job with this movie specifically , as well as video game movie adaptations in general.

There have been worse video game movies, but I'm not sure if there's any that have been more genuinely disappointing. They had so much talent involved, and such a great jumping-off point for stories, and managed to turn it into a dire, joyless mess that couldn't even manage satisfying action.

I honestly knew this movie was gonna be mediocre to bad the moment I heard that they were going to spend the majority of their time in the present and only around 30% in the past. If you’ve played Assassin’s Creed you know that the present day story is never really a highlight of the experience and although they could’ve still built an interesting narrative in the present, neglecting what most fans are actually looking forward to was probably going to end badly. But I also can’t say that there was much they could’ve done either way since they not always enough time to flesh out the story, especially Assassin’s Creed which are two stories for the price of one. The best thing they could’ve done was just make this a TV show instead since they could’ve definitely have more time to do both stories with better development and characters.

I would agree the special effects really did hinder a lot of the shots and the writing was not the best. I do think they should try again and take a better look at what the fans enjoy the most from the franchise. I would also say they should make a series instead of a movie. There is a lot to the story and they need a series to tell it. I would love for this to happen.

I've always said, an adaptation of Assassin's Creed would benefit more had you taken the AC1 or AC2 approach to how to reveal the otherworldly elements(Apple of Eden), slowly and with mystery and then reveal what it could do. As for the Modern Day, a film called Source Code and obviously The Matrix proved you can do a good movie that concentrates a good amount in a simulation and the other in the real world. But for the first Assassin's Creed movie it should've been a very minor thing and have the modern day character grow to be become an Assassin like Desmond over the course of a few stories or not included at all. Also, limit Ubisoft's creative control. Having them wanting to have the movie be canon to the games is a cool idea but a bad one creatively. It would've been so cool having an adaptation of either one of the Assassin's Creed games, with the easiest ones for a blockbuster trilogy being the Ezio Trilogy. Here's hoping Ubisoft learnt from these mistakes for the Netflix Series and actually leave the creators to do what they want and not limit them to "game canon"

This adaptations wasn't the worse ever attempted but I do agree with the videos assessment about the fog effects and the non verbal stuff!!! Audiences are usually in need of things explained along the way otherwise they are just looking at moving pictures from scene to scene and no emotional dependency in-between the characters and the audience develops! I am reminded of some mid nighties game adaptation movie like "Wing Commander"! I really enjoyed it and have watched it many times... But then again I was around when the game first appeared! Maybe some of that money spend on this one should have been decided so that they can make two movies... Maybe a second part to Wing Commander! ... And they could have had a double matinee or something! I know it's far fetched... Different companies and such... But hey it's not a bad idea!

As a lifelong fan of the computer games, having played them and owning them all, I feel the main mistake of the movie was setting so much of its story in the current/modern era. The games are about 90% in the past and 10% in the modern era, the fun is in playing in the past and being an assassin. It also took way to long to explain what was going on in current day. If they had simply adapted the first game, or any of the games, directly to screen they might have gotten a better reaction.

It's weird that lacking CGI is pointed out here as an obvious flaw, while other big movies with lacking CGI get that part completely glossed over, generally. The sad thing is that they did a lot of real stuff, stunts and sets, still, and the failure makes other movies less likely to go that route.

The problem with video game adaptations is that it is never a single vision. You have the studio, the game developers, audiences expectations, producers, star power... all muddling it. As a lazy example, Christopher Nolan's films have a singular vision, his. So no matter what, you KNOW that it is the complete realized artistic vision he aspired to. Look at the recent disaster of Uncharted movie. The number of writers and directors that changed and replaced etc to end up with another bland/mediocre adaptation.

Too many story elements for a simple adaptation. Should have been a period piece only. The main character would have hidden the Piece of Eden where no one, not even the audience, would know. The film could have ended with a coda of a descendant being brought in to relive memories. The sequel then would have been about finding where the ongoing maguffin is hidden. Then that sequel would end with a revelation what the origin of the piece of Eden might be. And you could have capped it all off with a third film wherein the descendant would have manifested his ancestor's abilities.

I'm a huge AC fan. Played every game and I mean every single one even the mobile games, psp game, and ds game along with the main games even the new ones. Read the comics and even have the AC gold audio book. This film takes huge risks with the lore but other than the animus they used I liked it. It could be better but focusing more on the assassin in ancient times but I think it was still done alright here. Could have been better and I do hope it is given another shot either as a movie or as an animated show exploring one assassin or tell short stories from different assassin's throughout history. Both could work

I loved this film & it’s not normally my favourite kind of entertainment! I’ve never been a gamer or interested in the characters that became famous from them. BUT I ave to say that the idea of genetic memory that could take a person back in time to an earlier ancestor & be able to absorb their life & knowledge really appealed to me as I love historically based films & also films set not too far into the future that it takes 3 viewings to work out exactly what is going on! Yes it could have been a little physically lighter rather than a dust bowl, that would really have helped it in the box office. I would still like to see a sequel. I think that the whole problem with films based on “games” is that fans of the games have totally unrealistic expectations of the film, whereas film goers live myself are looking for an alternative idea of an interesting, enjoyable film! Just thought that I’d let you know that not everyone hated this film. If you don’t know what game it’s based on the film is actually a good night out!

But maybe at this point it should just be something similar but not the game franchise. Because it just screams out that you made something for the people that have played it. Sonic did a very well remake of the original with a little touch of new. For assassins creed, they could have just recreate the story of Ezio from AC2 like they did with Lineage that was a short live action following Ezio's dad.

She said this movie was making her head spin! I soon sat her down and explained it all myself from the context of the games and she said 'everything you said was more interesting than what they showed in them movie!' To me, a series would have been a much better option. A movie just doesn't have enough time to explore the characters. But FOR a movie, the big problem was that they completely forgot the past sequences importance. The present dat of the AC games is important too, but the most fun, interesting and probably anticipated aspect of Assasin's Creed is to live the past centuries, to know what the historical periods where like. The spanish inquisition was such a mayhem, and I believe that if the movie was more focused on it, it would'be been a lot more interesting and surely succesful. A pity, this movie had it all to be great.

When it comes to video games adaptations Assassin's Creed is not even close to be in the "bad adaptation" list. It was an interesting take on the games universe. I like that they did not adapt Desmond/Altair/Ezio storylines directly and tried their own spin on it. Kurzel direction made the movie look really nice, better than most action "non-superhero" blockbusters of that time. Not like his Macbeth where almost every shot looks like an artistic masterpiece, but nice nothenless. Fassbender is an amazing actor. One of, if not the best actor of last 15 years. He delivers extraordinary performances even in really bad movies (Dark Phoenix for example). What lost ne in Assassin's Creed were the "15th century Spain" sections. They looked dull and boring. There were I believe about 3-4 chapters in movie dedicated to that period in time and they all look the same. Nothing made them special. I actually found myself falling asleep in the theater on the premiere night in Poland. And I agree with Fassbender on the point that the movie should be more entertaining. As I mentioned, the "past" sections were dull and boring and looked the same. The Leap of Faith was awfully edited. And the story took itself way too serious. It's the same why first AC game is, when it comes to story, way more boring than any of "Ezio Trilogy" games. Altair had little personality and the same was with Aguilar, Fassbender looks great, but the character, just was. We didn't know his origin, his personality, nothing, because "15th Century Spain" parts were only action-oriented, and because of the dust effect, they were boring and unpleasant to watch. Shame, because Assassin's Creed is a great series to be adapted. I hope that some good studio will again risk to pick up the franchise and try with a movie series or a streaming show. Game adaptations on streaming were pretty well received recently with Fallout celebrating their success and LoL Arcane's 2nd season being highly anticipated even by people not liking the game. I just hope that some studio will take a Leap of Faith and try again with Assassin's Creed.

The main problem the movie had was it's time. AC games are good because most of the time we are in the past exploring monumental cities and historic periods. The modern world aspects are just not as entertaining. The movie spent too much damn time in the present which no one in any AC game does. Unless a plot point pulls you out of the Animus, no one actually spends time in the modern day. The Spanish Inquisition was just brilliant and well done. It's the only reason I enjoyed the movie. But I just wish we spent more time there. The parkour, fight scenes, premise and design were Amazing. Too bad they are only shown for like a quarter of the movie

I rememeber being excited to go see the movie went to see it with my buddy us both being die hard fans of the franchise come out feeling really let down. The big problem I have with it is that it didn't know how to respect the audience. When making a film adaption which has a large soruce of other media the movie will either alienate less enfranchised or be a starting point for casuals to the ip and be sort of boring to the die hards. Do one of the other this movie did both in my oppion which is why it feel flat. Honestly if they just went with pleasing the more devoided fans then you can still spark intrest in the casual fans which would make them want to explore the other media of this franchise. If you look at john wick it just put you into the world and slowly opened it up and showed how it all worked for the audience. Assassin's creed lore and ideas are super intresting and learning about it over a 15+ hours is what got use hooked in addiont to the gameplay. Go hard on the lore and ideas people aren't that dumb. Who doesn't love a good conspiracy two powerful shadowy factions fighting for control throught history. As mentioned by Mr.Fassbender in the vid he thought it should have gotten to the action faster but be less serious. I do agree with the first point but I disagree with the second I believe a serious movie would have been fine if it didn't try to cater to two crowds.

First off, I will not stand this Mario Bros. slander. Chaotic genius piece of work there.

With a game like this where there are a lot of elements and game styles (I like the platforming, many people don't) it becomes hard to please all the fans and to do so in a way that makes sense. What I like and take away from the game is very different from others. you are also trying to take a 20+ hour game (story not side missions and likely 5+ hours of narrative) and condense it into a 2 hour film that make sense to newcomers and works for fans.

It's the script that was lacking. Everything else was pretty good actually. I wish they put more work into the script work.

Personally, I thought it was just ok, it wasn't bad or terrible, which is a small win, but They missed an opportunity to follow Desmond's story in the film, I personally thought Fassbender was going to play Desmond when I first heard about it and thought, oh that's cool.

The dust effect and the overall color tone of the movie really just brought the whole thing down IMO. It was SO dark and washed out.

Having never played the games I had no idea the Animus was something from the games; I thought they were straightforward historical epics. So when the movie trailer came out my reaction and revealed the Animus my kneejerk reaction was "this is stupid."

My Nagel complaint about the game and the movie is just focus on the historical aspect. I could do without all that virtual reality, DNA, sci-fi, nonsense. The historical status interesting enough on its own and merits, 100% of the attention.

Yeah, the movie wasn’t any good at that time. But I did watch it on FX and I think it’s a guilty pleasure movie. Shame that Michael Fassbender has yet to make a new movie since it’s 2022. I thought Fassbender’s role as Steve Jobs was very good.

It's perfectly acceptable to admit that a movie isn't good, and still enjoy it. MST taught me that decades ago.

What the hell are you talking about? Fassbender did do new movies after this.
@KadeemG612 жыл бұрын
His last role was in Dark Phoenix and we all know that turned out.
@hoya11782 жыл бұрын
@@KadeemG61 His was still good in that film, he is not in control of the rest of the film and is not his fault. Also that he did movies in between Assassin's Creed and Dark Phoenix Fassbender already said in 2016 that he was going to take a break from making films. During that time he got married, started racing and had a kid with his wife. He started make movies again in late 2019, starting with Kung Fury which has been delayed by Covid and problems with a chinese investor that they had to go to court. But that has been settled now and a releas this year is most likely. He also did a film with Taiki Waititi called "Next Goal Wins" but that has also been delayed by covid and they had to replace Armie Hammer in a small role and reshoot his scenes with Will Arnett, but it will be released this year. And he has done a film with David Fincher called "The Killer" that finished filming this year.(that film will probably be released next year.)

The worst part of this movie for me was the acting out of the action while in the animus and the constant cutting back and forth to the simulation. It was completely unnecessary, kept interrupting the action and made it hard to follow what was happening.
