I have a feeling Proyas didn't have his heart in "I Robot" & was doing it more for the check. One of the reasons I really like "Gods of Egypt"is because he invented an entirely original universe (as he did in "Dark City") & made it feel real for me. I think GOE just became one of those "hey, let's all beat up on this film" movies (Beatty's "Dick Tracy" also got that kind of reception) far beyond its actual weaknesses.

I love this movie. The love story between Horus and Hathor with Zaya and Bek talks about how our pasts may haunts us, of hidden obligations and hopeful promises for the future dashed. And that through sincere sacrifice, in small parts by all actors of the drama, brings fulfillment to life.

Honestly, this movie’s casting is the least of its concerns. Its biggest problem is the plot overall. It suffers from a plot that keeps resetting its momentum, making up new MacGuffins and plotpoints on the fly without proper set ups from before. And the mortal plot line of Bek feels really awkwardly tacked on, wedged in between the plot of Horus’ growth and development. It also doesn’t help that Horus is supposed to be born AFTER Set decided to murder his dad Osiris for shagging with Set’s wife leading to the birth Horus’ older half brother, Anubis. They could easily tiptoe around the problem altogether by centering the plot focus on Horus’ growth and his relationship with his brother Anubis as they fight to depose Set from the throne and all of them are animated based on how the Egyptian portrayed the gods in hieroglyphs and wall paintings. Simple plot, straight forward goal, but rooms for setting up all the Chekhov’s Guns from the get go.

Know what the sad part is? When watching this "behind the scenes" footage the slower parts of the movie is what looks best. The costumes, the props, the actors and even extras. the sets had heart. Its the action, the monsters and the "Gods" SFX that couldnt be made good enough for the budget they had. The humans needed a larger part, the gods needed a smaller part. It needed to be more Egyptian LOTR and less Egyptian Transformers. The "diversity" issue was unfair media mob behavior from the start. Remember the ancient Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt was greek while the version of Egypt the media mob referred to was created when the armies of Islam took over northern Africa circa year 600 several hundred years later. The media mob did the same crap against another movie complaining about Israeli actress Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra despite her being born next door to where the real Cleopatra lived. This demonstrates it was never about "whitewashing" anything. It was about erasing the Greek-Roman parts of Egyptian history.

It's a shame because not only is Proyas a fascinating, visionary director, but the historical epic genre is all but extinct in today's austere climate of IP and legacy franchise domination (to me it's criminal that The Northman wasn't a box office success). There is so much material to mine from Egyptian history and mythology, but I think it's unlikely that's we'll get the Egyptian epic of our dreams any time soon (if ever). Also, I'm convinced that there are better cut of Exodus: Gods and Kings and Noah out there.

@ImOnIt4272 I mean honestly, sometimes it's just that. Or rather just bad marketing I rewatched the trifecta of failed disney blockbusters (Lone Ranger, John Carter and Tomorrowland) and look, I know for a fact my taste in movies is not very good, but those are very fun good blockbusters. Lone Ranger is at least as good as the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie imo. And because of various marketing misfires (the whole Johnny Depp isn't native america, John Carter shitty trailers and whatnot) those movies bombed and bombed hard.

Me too (and Jupiter Acsending). The only thing that bugged me was the way the dialogue seemed to have been very obviously redubbed in that it all sounded like it was in a recording booth with an up close mic rather than in the environments. I wondered originally if they just did not have enough time to naturalise the dialogue recordings but now I wonder if they had originally tried some Egyptian accents then decided to redub it at the last minute.

I liked this movie. It had the right amount eye candy. The film's title misleads into thinking a documentary instead of a fantasy-genre. This movie made me appreciate gold as I usually hate the color, moreover I think it would've made it even better if they gave more historically accuracies to the traditional myths blended smoothly with modern originatilaty. I like the thief making a deal with a god in-exchange to revive the mortal's lover; even Horus admitted that its impossible against the rules. Whitewashing is annoying accusation. We can do whatever to fictional characters, making Thor black doesn't do anything, because despite skin color he would still talk and behave of the Norse culture. Superman as a blackman would still be adopted by farmer parents and talk similar to them. Being born with skin color genetics doesn't automatically make you speak in a certain way. 'certain way' is technique, techniques are taught and/or learnt. You're not born with techniques, you're born with instincts that leads to learning techniques.

I'm sure an Egyptian film company would cast an all Egyptian group of actors, but this is an American film. Just as I'd imagine an African made movie set in England during the Civil War would also be made up of primarily African actors. All this virtue signalling diversity talk is in itself racist. This recap left out director Proyas' extended, bitter engagement with critics after the movie got so viciously slammed...It culminated in his statements (NYT op-ed?) which condemned the criticism as insensitive and cruelly bullying to the individuals and teams who had put their blood, sweat and tears into the production. He felt it was unfair for many of the critics to slander people they didn't know. Further, he wondered how they could justify the potential damage they might render to the careers of these hard-working professionals (and their livelihoods and their families')...He pointed out that celebrity actors, writers, directors, producers, etc., may be financially insulated from the fallout of a box office and critical flop but almost everyone else on a production may not be. Regardless of what I felt about the movie (I liked it well enough), I was struck by Proyas' comments (whether self-serving or not, I don't care). We live in an age when it is extremely easy to provide instant feedback on just about everything. That sometimes takes on a nasty edge. That nastiness can be amplified, its distribution accelerated and its impacts magnified by the viral, networked nature of our media. What's potentially missing in all that is simple human compassion -- our sensitivity and respect for each other. It's so easy to say some snarky, malignant thing out of the sneering corner of our mouths (whether we even mean it or not). We don't have to think about it; we don't have to really care. But it sure is hard to take it back once it's out there and the damage is already done.

If Bollywood made movies about Rome I wouldn't expect to see Italians speaking Latin but if they got the costumes and characters right a passable set and at least respected the history I'd watch it. I think miss representing a person's Character and actions in such dramatic and deliberate ways is worse than getting there visual appearance wrong

I was less bothered by the white washing. The only time I can think of that that's really bothered me was when they Cast ScarJo as Motoko in Ghost in the Shell. There was plenty of good Japanese actresses they could have gotten, but again, box office draw. My issue with this film was all the money went into CG. There are films with big special effects budgets, but when you can see where the money went and it looks good, I'm fine with that. This movie looked poorly done on too much CG and cost cutting corners. I watched the 2019 Hellboy movie the other night and as poorly as that movie is written, the special effects look alright, and you can tell some aspects are real. David Harbor was actually dressed up in makeup and such. CG is a good tool but smart directors have to know when and where to use it, and in my opinion, it should be used like calk, that filler for the gaps that practical effects cant fill in feesibly. Putting real objects in front of the camera will always look better, that is something Hellboy got more right, or even the first few Underworld movies. These are all dumb spectacle movies, which is fine, but knowing how to pull them off is the key.

Ignoring the absurd and complete whitewashing, I couldn't get through the movie... And I tried... TWICE. It was just a horrible film almost from top to bottom. The characters weren't likeable nor engaging, the plot was a mess, the CGI was dreadful. Addressing the casting directly, the reason it matters, even in a fantasy film such as this is the same reason a lot of people in the comments probably feel justified in hating the casting being pointed out or even using the newly weaponized buzzword, "woke". If people are raised to believe something is true that isn't, when faced with the truth they exhibit cognitive dissonance and are utterly and unwilling to entertain the truth. By Hollywood whitewashing roles for decades, the concept that Black people existed outside of modern drug dealers and ancient slaves is incomprehensible to most.

"If I even tried to explain it your brain would liquefy and flow out your ears." The above Quote in the Movie from "Thoth" says it all. But here's a Try, Nonetheless...Outrageously Over the Top may be a Redundant way of Describing Director Alex Proyas' Vision or Version of another "Gods" of Mythology Film that have come "Fast and Furious" to Movie Screens in Recent Years. But this one is more "Fast and Furious" than any. It Works so Well because, unlike those others (You know who), this Beautifully Garish and Gaudy Movie Never for one Nano-Second takes itself Seriously. It is Presented for Your Consideration as a Dreamscape of Pre-History. The Golden-Age and Speaking of Gold. In this Fantasyland the Gods actually have Gold Pulsating through Their Veins instead of Blood and that Really-Cool Twist is Reflected in the Template of this Eye Popper at every Turn and every Level. It is a Film Designed to Push, Stretch, and Reach for the Limits of Current Capabilities concerning CGI in Modern Movie Making. What it Lacks in Thespian Talent, it makes up for in a Grandiose Vision filled with a Colorful Vibrancy. It's Artistic Scheme of Things Reminds of Comic-Books, Pulps, Heavy Metal Magazine, Computer Games, Poster Art, and other Pop Culture Splashes of Loud, Lurid, Luscious Displays that Attract Attention, if not Praise from the Cultural Elite. The Tweaking or Embellishment of Egyptian Mythology is Clever and done with a Wink and a Wonderment from a Director that's Not Afraid to Take Chances, Tilt the Windmill, and Challenge the Film-Making Status Quo. Not Everything Works to Perfection but this Piece of Modern Art cannot be as Easily Dismissed by Uppity Critics and Knee-Jerks so Quickly. This has all the Aspects of a Cult-Movie and while it is Currently Dismissed by most as "God-Awful", Future Reflection and Reaction to this Entertainment will be just the Opposite. Proyas will be Redeemed as Time Passes, because this is a Timeless Treat for Anyone who can Enjoy Pure, Infectious Eye Candy that has No Pretensions of being anything else.

Okay, so in woke logic, it's completely okay to ignore Tolkien's (very detailled and deliberate) character descriptions etc., but a campy fantasy movie that is very vaguely based on egyptian myths, has to be as accurate as possible. Yeah, sure. ;) If diversity is such an important strength for Hollywood, then why do so many of those very diverse/woke movies (and tv shows) become huge flops? Shouldn't there be a huge audience who is hungry for more diversity? People longing for more representation for decades now? Well, at least that's what we're told. Or could it be that those woke shitstorms (like it happened with "Gods of Egypt") only represent a very small minority of frustrated morons who spend their money on OnlyFans and Twitch thots and OnlyFans rather than buying movie tickets? Just sayin. ;) Greetings from Germany!
