For many around the world, there’s one name at the top of the action totem pole. Jackie Chan!
If you only know Jackie Chan as a goofy martial arts comedian from the Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon series, then consider this a wake up call. Many would point to Drunken Master II as Jackie’s magnum opus. And that is an all-timer, but for an example of his best modern day martial arts action, mixed in with some crime drama and his signature comedy, one of his absolute best outings is 1985’s Police Story. And ACTION!
This episode of Reel Action is written, narrated and edited by E.J. Tangonan.
Do you think Police Story is Jackie Chan's best? Let us know in the comments!

Still one of my all-time favorite Jackie Chan movies, and one that I re-watch every so often. Turned me on to foreign films (besides the Godzilla series, of course) and a different idea of action movies. At the time, I couldn't figure out why he wasn't a bigger star. Little did I know that in Asia, he was HUGE. Watching it now makes me nostalgic for that era in movies, music, and even for the Hong Kong which existed back then. 1985 was the year I graduated from high school, and I'm so glad for that. Those of you born after the 80s really missed out!

@@fekalistagrzybowory7619 Police story was the pinnacle of JC but but he has sold his soul to the devil now. He was born and raised in British Hong Kong to mainland chinese pro kmt parents who fled maos communist slaughter, biggest sponsor was Japanese company Mitsubishi corporation who funded his early movies up until the late 90s. So how does he repay the missive opportunity he was given to be a mega star thanks to to virtues of western capitalism? He becomes a boot licking ccp party member, stars in ccp produced anti-Japan propaganda “patriotic” brainwashing movies and cheers the rounding up and purge of pro democracy protestors in Hong Kong which is now a dystopian hellhole. Jackie Chan died the same time Hong kong died when the british gave Hong kong to red china..

This showcases one of the biggest differences between older and newer movies. The stuntwork was a lot riskier, generally. I mean, I can hardly imagine many of Chan's insane stunts being allowed these days. Chan, over the course of his career, broke or dislocated nearly every bone in his body, it seems, and he often performed with injuries. While I'm against dangerous practices on set, I can't lie and say it didn't sometimes result in better action on screen.

What baffles me is hardly any movie reaction channels cover Police Story. It's always Rush Hour... and that's it. They always commented how awesome Jackie is and it's their first Jackie movie reaction but ignores his superior Hong Kong movies. 😂 More people should not only learn about Jackie's Police Story series but also Project A and other projects like Wheels on Meals and the Armor of God movies.

Let’s be real here… a lot of casual fans didn’t really know about Jackie Chan until Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour. It wasn’t until those films were successful that Hollywood started porting his movies from Hong Kong overseas, not to mention the rise of the internet. So of course a casual fan would start watching his mainstream films over his Hong Kong films

There is a great chapter in Jackie’s biography I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action where he talks about the origin of Police Story and we have to owe it to his first failured attempt to break into the American market. When both The Big Brawl and especially The Protector failed with the US audience in the mid 1980’s, Jackie was extremely frustrated mostly due to not having control of the stunts and fight scenes in The Protector. He returned to Hong Kong with this frustration boiling inside of him and then wanted to do a movie that he had full control over be it directing, writing, stunts, fight choreography etc. That movie became Police Story. He went all out, balls to the walls in terms of stunts and fight scenes. All that which he wasn’t able to do in The Protector and show his skill to the US market. Jackie was a one man army with Police Story and he always mention that Police Story is the film that he is most proud of. I’d urge any Jackie Chan fan to read his biography.

I wouldn't say this is his best. But it's an excellent example. Personally I think there are several examples you have to combine from different movies. 1. Wheels on Meals comedy elements 2. Project A (and pt2) for it's Keaton-esque stunts and homage. 3. Armour of God for the Benny Urquidez fight, which is still one of his greatest 1v1s. 4. Who Am I? building slide. 5. Rumble in the Bronx building jump to stairs. and many more. Jackie Chan is more than the sum of any one movie. He is a lifetime experience. [Edit: I had just hit the vape and messed up my references. The New Line Cinema version(1998 VHS tape/USA) removes footage of a police officer urinating in his pants. They also recycled music J. Peter Robinson composed for Mr. Nice Guy(1997).

personally i also really enjoyed the last 2 police stories. It is indeed different then we were used to from jackie. But good acting and films on their own. I do get your issue of editing and the shots

It was unfortunate, that the electrician didn't do his job. HOWEVER, would there have been are much sparking & flashing, if things had been done right? It's bad when misunderstandings and accidents endanger actors. However, the scene might not have been nearly as iconic, without the bright explosive flashes. He takes many risks & usually takes a severe beating in each film. The outtakes shown during the credits really emphasize this. I'm not sure how to feel. I appreciate the productions that result. I admire him for pushing the envelope & taking risks. Sometimes, I wonder if it's worth it, but it's not my decision. I'm just glad he has survived.

Yes, it is. But honestly I flip/flop between this and Drunken Master II as my favorite.

Next you could do Unnatural history from 2010 from Cartoon Network and it's only one season and Maybe you could also do Aaron Stone from Jetix from 2009 too, thank you.

Rush hour movies definitely the funniest of Jackie's filmography but in terms of action it's not even close to his Hong Kong movies, especially police story which has some of the best stunts in the history of cinema.

The action and story idea is still good, some acting scenes, especially lines, aged not good. For me 'Armour of God 2 - Operation Condor' and 'Project A' top this movie

It almost not seen fair That Jackie Chan made all these movies. And Bruce Lee only made 4 and a 1/2 movies but hes considered the best martial artist ever But at the same time you can't argue with it though because Bruce Lee is a legend

Bruce will always be the pioneer, that first popularized kung fu cinema in the west. Plus, he's super Iconic (more so than Jackie). But relax, they both have their place in immortality. Personally, I prefer JC, but whatever, glad we had both.
