What Happened to True Lies?

Believe it or not, James Cameron has only directed nine released narrative features in his titanic 40-year career in Hollywood. The self-proclaimed cinematic King of the World is the second-most lucrative filmmaker after the incomparable Steven Spielberg, with Cameron’s wildly entertaining movies grossing $8.7 billion globally. Still, two of his titles remain slightly overlooked compared to Aliens and the landmark Terminator and Avatar flicks. If you had to make a legitimate case for either, what would you say is Cameron’s most underrated movie: The Abyss or True Lies? Aside from Piranha 2: The Spawning that is.
As you chew on that sucker, it’s worth noting that True Lies is loosely adapted from the 1991 French spy farce La Totale, directed by Claude Zidi. It’s the only film in Cameron’s quiver to be remade from a preexisting movie. From Arnold Schwarzenegger’s near-fatal horse-riding mishap, and Jamie Lee Curtis’ death-defying stuntwork, to Cameron almost directing Spider-Man: The Movie instead, to the insane Harrier Jet finale, and much more, it’s time to pull the ice cube trays out of the freezer and find out What Happened to True Lies as the film celebrates its 30th anniversary.

u know this is why i love the Joblo channel, u guys cover all facets of the movie entertainment industry and yes as a long time Cameron/Ridley and Spielberg fan I wud say that Cameron's Abyss is his most underrated and overlooked masterpiece which is finally finding love in the last decade or so. His Avatar movies r hit and miss honestly with the second part his weakest entry in his limited list of movies, very hyped and overcooked, he needs to do better in Avatar 3.

One of my top fave Cameron films; Hell! Top fave action films. That Harrier Jump Jet bridge sequence was and still is awesome (I used to play parts of it back in slo-mo on VHS to study it). Add to the fact of finding out how it was done… chef’s kiss!! Come to think of it, in the Hall of Great Remakes, would True Lies count among them? P.S. Man! I watched the rest of the video after my comment and DAMN! That is terrible what happened to Eliza Dushku. What’s worse is that the dude tried to retaliate doing what (had she died) is basically attempted murder.

I believe Terminator 2 is indeed the first movie that has the budget of over 100 million dollars (not account for inflation; 102 million dollars to be exact); James Cameron himself also admits this fact during the audio commentary that was recorded for Terminator 2. 2): True Lies is hardly underrated; it is James Cameron's gigantic follow-up to Terminator 2; it was being promoted as an big summer event movie when it was released. Because True Lies turned out to be inferior to Terminator 2 (it is still a fun action movie); It failed to gross as much money as Terminator 2 as the result (500 million dollars VS. 375 million dollars worldwide).

Wow The Abyss or True Lies? How do I choose? I actually read the novelisation of The Abyss I liked it so much (I rarely read "books based on movies"), but True Lies is just so sublimely hilarious and the chemistry between Arnie and Lee is perfect. I cant choose. They are both amazing and both are better than either of the Avatar films. To be clear I don't hate the Avatar movies the way most people seem to retroactively hate them (someone paid those box office dollars), but they just don't feel as fresh as some of his other films. Aliens is my fave of his. Great pacing, great acting, great line delivery. Just a masterclass action film.

Misinformation on one thing honey. Curtis did not mean to slip, that was not planned. In many interviews Curtis slipped on the bed post from her hands being sweaty. She thought it was perfect because that’s how Helen would act. Actually, when Jamie (Helen) fell on the floor, wasn’t planned by anyone. Not even her. She has said many times in interviews. The only movie I have 3 copies of 1) Original DVD (yeah, I had the VHS tape, but ditched that long ago) 2) Spanish edition Blu-Ray (with English audio track), because it was the only way to get better resolution 3) 4k Blu-Ray (JoBlo may grouse about the transfer, but I think it looks great)
