It's happened to lots of good jockeys over the years. Funny though. At Longchamp in France, there are two different winning posts, depending on the distance of the race. The great Willie Carson once got them mixed up and rode a finish 100m too soon on a filly called High Hawk. **it happens.

On the subject of jockey errors: Many years ago I backed a horse - CASPIAN SEA - even money favourite in the Grand National Hurdle, at Flemington. The Jockey waited and waited. How I wished he had taken off. I kept yelling "take off now. NOW! NOW! Move now and you absolutely bolt in". Then just as he made his long awaited move, the second favourite crashed to the turf - and you guessed it, Caspian Sea fell right over the top of him! My hundred dollar bet bit the dust! I was absolutely shattered. Gazumped. 100 dollars was worth a lot of money back then. I have never forgotten the absolute desolation of that falling feeling, and it was my first ever big bet. Caspian Sea, the horse that should have won that day, by well over 25 lengths!! The slow thinking jockey's name - long forgotten!

There were probably no dramas. The horse was 25-1 and in reality a Hurdler not a flat ground race horse. It ran another flat race after this incident and then put two wins together over hurdles. It then never came close to winning another race either on the flat or over the hurdles and was retired in April, 03.

Not really. If it were a 1400 race or even a mile, I could understand it. But tactics are huge in staying races and this shows clearly that there was no communication between trainer and jockey. Even if they didn't speak at all a good jockey should keep an eye on the form of the other horses in the race just to know how they run their races. And even if he didn't do that, the snail-slow pace and the reluctance of anyone to go forwards should have made him realize that he was not in a sprint.

I don't think he was on Cedarberg (RIP), I reckon it may have been Oliver??? Anyway, his ride on Ethiopia in the Derby was superb, and he handled the celebrations post-race with a heap of class. You are correct (rainy day so I checked the official horse results) Cedarberg won 4/17 Starts: 10.1.10 Ryan Maloney; 25.9.10 Chris Symonds; 9.2.11 Michael Walker and the last race it ever won Damien Oliver was on board 2.4.11 before being retired on 6.8.11 which was the only time Rhys McLeod EVER sat on the horse when it was a 60-1 chance - it ran 7/13 in the 1200m Good4 AURIE'S STAR Group 3

I mean, the horse was under whip and rode out a strong tempo 1200m, rallying it again clearly isn't worth it at that point, you could easily break down and injure the horse or even kill it by demanding more, the horse isn't going to win after expending all that energy early, so what's the point? Cut your loses, call it a day.

leepsl11 - We have plenty here in 🇦🇺 Past and Present that have been and are, the equal of Frankie. He actually got suspended in our Biggest race “The Melbourne Cup” about a week ago, for causing Major Interference to a couple of other runners. Very Amateurish from a supposed “Polished” Jockey, when as is mount was “Laying In” he should have stopped riding about 30m earlier (to straighten his mount), but opted not to, hence the “Big Suspension and Fine”. The horse he Checked severely, finished 4th but was going to win the race for sure, until the incident. The stewards protest was upheld and Dettori’s collect went from $55,000 for second prize money, to $15,000 for fourth prize money, oh, and a suspension and fine to boot. Frankie has been comin’ to 🇦🇺 year after year for about 16 years or so, trying to beat our best, and as of 2019, he hasn’t succeeded yet. So I’d be more than happy to put one of our 🇦🇺 jockeys on any of my horses whether it be here local or abroad. And FYI Ryan Moore is a far better rider than Frankie Dettori, AND he won our Melbourne Cup (at his 1st or 2nd attempt) about 5 years ago on Protectionist. 🐎🏆🇦🇺

Horses were not put on this earth to be used and abused for man's pleasure. If you can call greed, desperation and ego tripping pleasures. Horses are ancient healers and have the power to replenish and save a man's soul . How man chooses to enjoy this game called horseracing just proves that Satan really does exist and those men have no soul to be saved. Horses do not enjoy racing they run through fear.
