Judo is a great art, and a great sport. But BJJ is its own deal. BJJ started the 20+ year worldwide initiative on ground fighting, one which has explored this facet of grappling exponentially more than Judo would ever have done, and all because some skinny Brazilians went against the grain and tried their hand, and made popular, the still primitive, and oft overlooked, Judo newaza. If it wasn't for the pioneering of the Gracie clan, then the great advancements in modern grappling techniques would likely not have taken place. There wouldn't have been an MMA. Wrestling would still triumph as the foremost dominant, and most versatile, grappling art. The guard, as we know it today, wouldn't be a fraction of what it could've been. BJJ, for the most part, kept its rules open, and, despite differences in scoring between individual BJJ tournaments, gave way to the grappling community at large to become the final word on grappling technique, for the basis of this Art encouraged its practitioners to take initiative and develop it further. BJJ is greater than its ground origins, which itself is an ocean of knowledge, complete with many facets that could hardly all become specialized in the course of a lifetime. The BJJ student employs the best of all grappling techniques, whether or not they were once penned by a fellow Jiu-Jiteiro, and the best of all BJJ students mold said techniques into effective systems that are applicable to their BJJ sparring, where submissions are ever a threat. I look forward to listening to this podcast. I have no formal Judo training, though I've come to greatly respect it through learning it through my BJJ fellows who have. I've also been more than impressed with the best Newaza users Judo has to offer. I've learned plenty from instructionals by these Judoka under the format that they teach. I hope to learn the art someday formally, perhaps even master it, when times are a bit more settled. Until then, let it be known to all that BJJ isn't a mere plagiarism of higher martial arts. BJJ has carved its name amongst the other great grappling styles of our time, and deserves recognition for doing so... all because some skinny Brazilians took the path less traveled. 🇧🇷 God bless!

I've noticed since all the commercial time outs have come into play beginning in Podcast #76, it kills the mood of the topics. When Jocko is deep into a lesson and a commercial comes on, it loses it's power. I hope Jocko and Echo aren't compromising their podcast integrity for a few extra dollars. Other than that, Jocko Podcast is the best series of podcasts on the web as far as message, inspiration, and motivation.

judo and bjj both originate from jiu jitsu judo is the "soft" form or the sports form of jiu jitsu bjj is how jiu jitsu developed in brazil under the gracies not sure if judo is older than bjj without going to wiki
@ChZonnenSassyColon6 жыл бұрын
Judo is older than BJJ. Prof Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo, studied several forms of Japanese Jiu Jitsu. At the time he was studying, Japan started to walk away from martial arts to modernize. Prof Kano founded the Kodokan. His belief was that the old ways could benefit the scholar, the world, the gentlemen and ladies. He took the teachings of several schools of jiu jitsu, Western Boxing and folk wrestling, and formatted a system of training where you didn't kill or maim your training partner. Judo has both a "sporting" format, which would be competitive style, and then a self defense format. The self defense format has striking, a few kicks, weapons, weapon defenses and those naughty leg grabs... Most folks in the US, only train in competitive judo... There's a really cool book called "Kano and His Students".... His students included Maeda, Marie Currie, Feldenkrais, Vasili Oschephov (the founder of Sambo) There's a mention of Kosen Judo.. It's awesome to see the crossover from grappling styles...Enjoy your rolls!
