Man that introduction by Sun Tzu is so good. "The Art of War is of vital importance to the state ... hence it is a subject of enquiry which can on no account be neglected". I remember where I was when I first read it. But hearing Jocko read it and get fired up about it is amazing! I've slipped it in during my teaching days : "Git is a tool of great importance to the programmer, a road to either team disputes or to good collaboration. Hence it is a subject which should really not be neglected" (change it up enough so that if you don't know the quote, it doesn't seem like I'm doing a bit, but not too much so that if you know the quote, you might recognize it).

The thought of Sun Tzu's art of war comes from the Tao. Many ancient Chinese ancient books, political books, medical books, astronomical books, etc. all originated from the philosophical thinking of Tao. Many books have been ruined due to historical wars and other reasons. Some books have also been retained.

D27Rugen what I wonder though is when do you take capabilities into consideration. A two year old tying shoes may be more than that two year olds ability. Do you leave their shoes untied? Jocko considers abilities. He has an example of a person who doesn’t have a voice that travels far. That person may need to get another to yell orders so they can be heard.

Thanks for answering my question about Sport vs Self Defense jits. I'm a white belt and still learning the basics. I have nothing against sport and would like to learn the sport techniques later on. But I'd also like to know that after reaching an intermediate/high level that whatever I've learned is still useful in a street situation - You've answered this question and thank you! As Echo said, there is some disapproval in the community regarding sport jiu jitsu and as a beginner, I just wanted to know that whatever I'm about to learn will still be potent in a real life situation.

My son has been taking Tae Kwon Do for 14 months. He recently joined the competition team. The difference in the execution and practice are night and day. Belt promotion, break a board, complete a sequence of moves, spar only with kicks waist high. Competition, different gear, different mannerisms, full contact, full body protective gear.

Jocko, thank you for answering about the question about regret for not joining the military. I am 32 and have always wanted to join but have not pulled the trigger yet to sign up. I feel serving is a great honor, calling, and brotherhood. I feel like I am at a point in my life where I need a life and work change. Would have been easier for me to do when I was younger and now at an older age where time is running out before I age out I am afraid I'll regret it later.

You are on the mark with your comments at 1:29 about people not being able to handle the truth, but more importantly for me, I am unwilling to shift in my way of interacting with people up and down the chain of command. I am used to focusing on the mission, and not dealing with emotions, which has limited my ability as a leader. I am direct, but compassionate and respectful; but usually brutally honest with people. I enjoy people being brutally honest with me, I feel that it cuts through the BS.

2500 years ago was a very interesting time period in terms of human enlightenment. Good advice. Use tact to deliver constructive criticism. Human reaction to constructive criticism has more to do with delivery, in most cases, than the content of the message. If you think the people working for you are stupid, why did you hire them in the first place? If you didn't hire them, as a good leader, IMO, you find a way to correct the stupid with constructive criticism and guidance. If you can't fix the stupid, then put that person in a low risk position. I would rather be hated for being honest and truthful, than loved for being disingenuous. A good read on tact is, "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

Interesting. About 7-8 years ago in high school I came up with an equation for teaching humans. 3 elements. Self Reliance to become Self-Sufficient in becoming Self-Sustaining. Pretty much what echo was talking about 1:04:20

The guy needs to watch the Gracie in Action films. The film shows clearly, men from ALL styles of martial arts versus the gracie BJJ style. Brazilian jui jitsu wins 99% of the time. I do think being familiar with boxing, and other striking arts is wise. However, if I only have the time to train in one combat sport it would be jui jitsu. It teaches position, which is the ultimate element in winning a brawl whether its street or sport. On the thought of revealing information I heard a man say "Is it true? Is it tactfully kind? Is it necessary?" I like that guideline for sharing information as a leader.
