Hey Jocko! Just wanted to say a thing or two. I was really overweight when I found you and your podcast. Maybe about 280-285 lbs out of easily 290 lbs on my weight loss journey. You preached about discipline, and willpower and all these other great things that I absorbed and put into my mindset. I actively search for the good in every situation. I strive to make myself better. And finally after a year of work and nearly 100 lbs lost, I weigh 198 lbs as of this morning and dropping, I am on my way to Marine Corps Recruit Training next month. This may be lost in the comments but I couldn't be more thankful for the time you spend educating people on bettering themselves the best way you know how, and talking about stories of heroes and their courage and the pure will to continue and never quit on themselves, and improving aspects of our lives and our outlook on life. I appreciate everything you do, and everything you're about and your powerful words as a leader. If I never found your podcast, I'd have probably given up on my dream long ago last year in mid august when everything in my body said "Quit". Keep getting after Jocko, you know for damn sure I will!

I drive an hour to work every day. However, I leave 1 hour and 45 mins early (work at 4, I leave at 2:15) in the event that something happens on the two highways and one interstate I have to take to work. Something like a wreck or just abnormally heavy traffic happens, I have a 45 min buffer to get to work. In the event I get to work unobstructed (98% of the time), I have the benefit of sitting in the nice, cool A/C sipping a cold drink and reading whatever book I'm on for 35 - 45 solid minutes before clocking into work. Win/Win.

Regarding the question about "playing the game" and Peterson's statements about agreeableness: I believe Jordan would tell you to keep one foot in Order and the other in Chaos - I.E. Tread the line, adjusting one way or the other when necessary.

One of the things that I do, for example when I have to be at school, appointment, etc. at ...lets say 0700. I will tell my self constantly that I have to be there at 0630...basically the day before or few days before to solidify it in my mind that anything later than that, I am late... helps me stay on time and I am notorious for being late....just some advice

I think they have this backwards. An excuse is a legitimate reason, as it excuses you. Whereas not all reasons are excuses, and therefore do not excuse, but are merely explanations for failure wherein the failing party is still at fault.

They are referring to making excuses for behavior that is within control of the individual making the excuse. Example: I manage a moving company in Dallas. Traffic is ridiculous in Dallas, around Dallas, and to Dallas. However, there are a crazy amount of alternate routes to and from anywhere in the metroplex. I never validate and "excuse" someone for being late due to traffic. There are too many news, traffic, and weather apps/websites that inform you of delays that the excuse is invalid. If the issue can be overcome with a modicum of effort, it is not an excuse.

Excuses can be legit, though as my wife said to me once "you can lie to me, but you can't lie to yourself." Only you know if an excuse is valid, regardless if others excuse you, take ownership when you put yourself in a failing situation and learn...

48:40 with all due respect Jocko, that’s not what I have seen in my own experience. This is not to say that playing the game for your team doesn’t work. It’s the virtuous path. But if you look at the board of directors in most multinational corporations, you will find the majority being career sociopaths that have many proverbial skeletons in their closet. It’s a very competitive game that promotes and rewards viciousness between departments and even within teams, due to the limited paths to career advancement and limited capital/resources to be allocated between teams. And senior management is mostly blind to this, as they don’t like people who are playing by different rules than the ones they played to get where they are. Being mindful of this while being true to yourself and playing “the game” is probably the path that you owe yourself to take.

Excuses = I blame myself . Reason = I blame myself . Mirror = I blame myself . When you realize the things you go throughout life is 100 % self , then you understand the choices 1 makes rather male or female . I digress

Alright, this was not the best. I'm at the part where you're both giving your stance on "playing the game", but Jocko is saying that if you're only out for yourself you won't get anywhere. Well, by definition playing the game is abiding by the rules/cooperating with those around you. Therefore, you are already doing them that service even if your end goals are your own. You really don't owe anyone anything more than that. In fact, you shouldn't give anyone more than that. No one is going to see the world exactly as you do or want the things you want for yourself more than you do. So yes, be kind- be cooperative at work/in relationships- but don't submit internally to the standards that are below yours when you want more for yourself.
