I had the extraordinary privilege of speaking to Mr. Winters back in 1998. I had just finished reading the book and this was before the HBO miniseries was made. At the end of the book, it stated he was (at the time), living in Hershey, PA. So, I searched for his address and phone# online and got it. Anyway, I called Mr. Winters to express my gratitude for my freedom that he and his men made possible by their efforts and sacrifices. During our convo, He told me 3 things I'll never forget: #1. "There are times in your life when the most important thing you can possibly be is mentally prepared." This, he told me, was what made the difference in men who cracked under the stress of combat and those who didn't. #2. The battle on the dike in Holland was his toughest one. He called it a "real son-of-a-gun," #3 He asked me at the end of our conversation to call his dear friend Fred "Moose" Heyliger to share with him the same sentiments I had just expressed. Mr. Heyliger was not doing well physically and Mr. Winters was sure my call to him would cheer him up. Typical of Mr. Winters...he was still thinking of his men rather than himself. I can tell you that Mr. Heyliger appreciated my call - he couldn't hear to well, but he understood what I was saying. The funny thing is, although I may not be able to remember a chat I had with my asshole boss yesterday, I can promise you I'll remember those two phone conversations with Mr. Winters and Mr. Heyliger on that Spring afternoon 19 years ago for the rest of my life. The purpose of my commentary here is not meant to brag or steal Jocko's thunder. Rather, it's to share with this community some additional insights into the remarkable leader and person Mr. Winters truly was. I am a huge fan of Jocko's podcast and I hope my contribution will make this particular episode all the more enjoyable and informative for everyone.

Stepping back from the firing line is much like an artist stepping back from his/her piece. It's a way of self-critiquing. When you are able to evaluate the circumstances, as a leader, you're not only looking at how your element can operate optimally, you are evaluating your decisions and adjusting fire. It's so awesome to see this in leaders, rather than them making choices from a disadvantageous position.

Discipline is crucial. So the means to maintain it are crucial: rest, food , some kind of security. I had a friend who was in Korea and he told me that they had to have one hot meal per day. It was crucial, tho they didn’t always get it. Without it , morale would begin to deteriorate.

I feel very fortunate to had met him and enjoyed conversations with him when he was not on deployment. I'd run into him walking his dog or at the coffee shop down the street from us. He was a very humble, kind and welcoming guy. RIP Seth

VERY glad to have "discovered" you and the podcast, Jocko. You are obviously very well-known but I must admit I'd never heard of you until your appearance on JRE. Even with my watching "military stuff" (primarily Vietnam and WWII docs, etc), I'd never seen you in "related" videos or videos suggested for me. I'm pretty sure I would remember your Col. Kurtz-ish appearance alone. Of course, Brando was weighing in at around 400lbs as Kurtz - but I'm sure you get my meaning. "Hulking" was one word Coppola chose to describe how he wished to depict Kurtz. If for some reason you detest that film - sorry I mentioned it. I'm sure you've heard people saying" it's crazy how I found you right when I needed this so much" - I happened to have "found you" just as I've gotten out of a physical/mental pit - but of course I'd be disappointed if this were the last pit I have to crawl out of in this human experience. Your words and references are quite vital for anyone at any time in their life. I've said more than intended- I've got a knack for creating TLDR's. Thank you and to the "fans": let's make sure this man is a household name.

You don't need vitamin C. Just put some lemon in your tea, or have a satsuma or oranage. If you get a satsuma/clementin you will get the natural efendrin, called synefrin. Zinc, we are all deficient in zinc, since it's in foods we don't consume often. Zinc is a major player. Just makes you think more clear and a positive atmosphere mineral.
