Warriors and philosophers talking about leadership. It's awesome

Accountability is the ultimate grown up move that many never make. To acknowledge the role you played in a situation good or bad is to show empathy for yourself and others. It means to realize that the facade of always being right is just that - a facade. To so many Americans,being accountable for the way their actions effect others is a lesson never learned.

"Leave me the hell alone so I can do my work" . That's so recognizable. I do understand it though : managers do need figures in order to be able to make predictions, and for example to be able to show that more resources need to be hired. They have to negotiate with their managers for more resources after all.
@cjbarna5 жыл бұрын
Your point is spot on K, but I think what's really bedrock here is that if you "leave them the hell alone", managers are then "tracking progress" as opposed to "setting quotas". Yes, there's overlap in those 2 thoughts but one is over-seeing and the other is enforcing. You're correct, managers do need to have predictive data. But ideally it would be based on numbers achieved instead of numerical quotas enforced. Peace...

The whole accountability thing is becoming a real issue these days. It's the sign of a struggling company. It truly is the worst for the most productive employees. The less productive employees don't have much of a problem with it because they don't care how much time they waste logging and emailing verification every step of the way.

The man is brains, don't let the exterior fool you. My life changed after reading his book. Even when I fail I remember accountability, I've blamed people less when there's problems, I think it's a petty human instinct to look for a scape goat, like adrenaline mixed with fear and confusion. We must be rational and logical in this life. When we do that we can then be strategic with purpose.

If you tyrannize people badly enough they'll hurt themselves to hurt you?; What?Clarification and examplebplease... How do?
@miltonpopper41815 жыл бұрын
For example, people might be willing to let a project fail, and not make a deadline, thereby missing a financial bonus that they would have gotten if they made the deadline, because they know that that failed project/deadline will cause absolute havoc for the tyrant manager to deal with. In this case, they are willing to take a financial hit (hurt) to cause a lot of stress, potential ruin, (hurt) etc. for the tyrant.
@TheDoctor12255 жыл бұрын
Think "Whatever it takes." People will do anything, endure anything, take any kind of hardship that could come their way just to GET you or GET BACK at you in some perceived way, when you are a boss that is tyrannical. Loss of bonus? Don't care as long as it hurts the boss. Loss of prestige to themselves or the company? Don't care as long as it hurts the boss. No good reference because I left without notice but by doing so it screws over the department and thereby screws over the boss? Don't care. It is, in a way, pettiness taken to the nth degree.

Jocko, Your opinion on accountability has one fundamental flaw, and that is the corruptible spirit of mankind. As the saying goes “ The path to hell is paved in good intentions.” What you should likely be referring to is micromanagement and not accountability. Our Republic has a Bill of Rights, Federal laws and a Constitution. These are the framework that holds our nation together and successful organizations live by or die by their motivation to follow rules. Those that break these rules should be punished. Punishment is a tool used to hold those that fail accountable and failing to do so becomes a normalized deviation. Once this process starts it is likely to expand and destroy the host. Mistakes will happen, but when motivated individuals make a mistake, they should count themselves lucky for not being caught. If they are caught, discretion can be used, but only when absolutely necessary. Your Community is currently experiencing the destructive power of losing accountability and failing to maintain standards. NSW is wrestling with this and so is the rest of SOF. SEAL Commanders are writing their NPC Thesis on how to fix this problem. Would you let an untested SEAL Platoon under your Command conduct a raid without ensuring they were proficient during training? What if they fail, would you hold them accountable if it was due to their actions?
