What is really eating me at the moment is that Society has decided that we must all curl up into a ball and cry that we are victims. I want to just live my life without obviously crazy dictates from others.

It starts with initiative of the self, community is describing a whole in society. Stoicism is about practically inputting lessons into life but nothing changes if nothing ever gets started so start with you and lead by example. Part of being a stoic is realizing you can't control others but you can hold up a sign and say I'm doing what is righteous would you like to make this society a better place too?

Reading this all I could hear was Goggins talking about people trying to dismiss what he does as something extra or special to give themselves a pass and excuse not to. In reality, Jocko (and Goggins) go to the bathroom just like we do. There is nothing impossible about discipline. I think its a matter of aligning your thoughts, actions, words and decision with who you say you want to be and go where you say you want to go. Self-sabotage and laziness are real. Don't be a contradiction to yourself and don't make Jocko out to be unattainable to let your ego off the hook. Get Some and Get After It you can totally do anything you want to.

My line is, ***The obstacle is where real life happens*** Being truley humble is key for me. I must admit to my innermost being that I have to accept the situation as it is. Then I have to apply my best thinking to this situation whatever it is. A lot of times it's requiring that I made a mistake this time around, admit this to myself. I AM responsible no matter what. Whether my mistake or the pandemic that happens. How can I fix it? How can I make this better? I'm not talking about material wealth or that type of success. But inner happiness and fulfillment. First, do no harm. I start there in my interactions. Most of the time, I manage to come out the other side feeling a great sense of accomplishment, I feel a sense that I did good and during that journey I've touched other people's lives and hopefully added something good to their lives and to the greater good of the world, too, I hope. In my own little way, in my little piece of the planet. And that's really what's most important to me.

Although the stories of Lewis Puller and Jim Sursely appear to be parallel examples of two people with catastrophic injuries who differ in their approaches to addressing the same issues, that is only superficially accurate. To compare one life to another on a narrow set of criteria and judge them based on the tangible "success" of each is a flawed method of interpreting what success is in something as complex as life. For that method to give a useful insight it would require an accounting of a near infinite number of variables in the entirety of each person's experience. Not only is that information unknowable to an observer but also to the individuals themselves.

⚠️ “1,500 years ago our kids would have” ... NO, they would NOT have, unless they were the sons of Royalty : everyone, more or less, were fully occupied of the absolute necessary gruelling work of survival 1,500 years ago, especially in Europe and it sure looks to me that you have European roots ! Another thing to bear in mind : very few members of different European Royal families did emigrate to the New World. Most of the people who moved across did that to find new opportunities of ‘necessity’ ... ⚠️

Ryan asks. How do you stay tight when you don't have too? I was really surprised Ryan asked this question. Man always has too stay tight as you put it. It gives him meaning and purpose and without meaning and purpose you head in a downward spiral. No matter how rich you are. Also, when you say he "doesn't have too" infers he has climbed to the top and no where else to go. You have to ask yourself. "Compared to what?"

@MrRadar45 Personally, I wouldn't say it has made me suddenly super disciplined or tough. It just helps me find something to aim for. Now and then a piece of Navy Seal wisdom will help me put something in perspective and act accordingly. When something bad happens, for example, I'm more likely to ask myself what I can improve, rather than focus on everything and everyone else. Instead extreme ownership helps me ask what I can do to make things better no matter the circumstances or what other people are doing. And this gives me way more insight. I realize things I wouldn't if I simply hadn't stopped to ask myself that question. It's a small thing, but I consider it a treasure. Maybe it takes the edge off my roughness. But I probably won't ever become David Goggins :p

I thought something similar when he posted the top 10 stoic moments in history vid. And Ryan made a statement like "we might not ever need to stand against Tyranny in Our Lives today but..."I felt he was only thinking about the developed world/US. cuz I thought there are tons of autrocities going on around the world, and took take them on in your backyard we just gotta plant our feet, apply our minds and take these things on, if it's through business, or head on conflicts for justice. It's for the world and crucial in every time period. let me know if you disagree

@@kisahnalahnpoveda9068 I agree with you on this, Allen. Besides that, my point was more in the direction of let's not use stoicism only as a give 110%, win-it-all thing, but as a way to lead a good life. Sometimes it is not only about winning. I know, a lot of people are inspired by Marcus Aurelius and the whole being-an-emperor stuff. But most of us won't be or do not even want to be liderus maximus. Let us remember that Epictetus was a slave for a good part of his life and then lived a modest (in a good way, modesty is a virtue, no matter what the society around tells you!) life. At the same time, we shall consider that stoicism was and still can be a philosophic tool against autocracy and tyranny, which can take many forms, not only within political systems but also in our daily lives. Cheers!
