If you enjoy this conversation, you'll love my talk with ‪@garyvee‬ 👉 • Before You WASTE Anoth...
Today, I sit down with Ryan Holiday to talk about living a life of discipline. Ryan and I share our thoughts and opinions on the different forms of disciplines and how they are formed in different cultures, the value of your time and with whom are you spending most of it, and how to be more kind to yourself and make decisions that are more centered on your well-being.
Ryan Holiday is an author, marketer, and entrepreneur. He is known for his writings on Stoicism and has written several books on the subject, including "The Obstacle is the Way," "Ego is the Enemy," and "The Daily Stoic." He has also worked as a marketing strategist for companies such as American Apparel and has written several other books on topics such as growth hacking and media manipulation. Ryan hosts the popular podcast, The Daily Stoic.
You can order my new book 8 RULES OF LOVE at 8rulesoflove.com or at a retail store near you. You can also get the chance to see me live on my first ever world tour. This is a 90 minute interactive show where I will take you on a journey of finding, keeping and even letting go of love. Head to jayshettytour.com and find out if I'll be in a city near you. Thank you so much for all your support - I hope to see you soon.
What We Discuss:
00:00 Intro
04:25 What is the real meaning of discipline in different cultures?
06:40 How do you overpower your own mind and learn to argue with yourself?
11:05 Discipline has to be balanced with sustainability, rest, and so much more.
16:22 If you look at your life calendar, whom are you spending most of your time with?
22:05 All the things we want in life are accidental byproducts of getting big things right.
23:38 What is the hardest discipline you’ve ever practiced?
29:21 Optimizing your personal life will make other things much easier to manage.
36:25 It’s never too easy to sit down with your thoughts but you can learn to get comfortable with it.
40:22 Are you getting better at becoming a better friend to yourself?
44:14 We can’t control what happens, but we can control how we respond to it.
48:25 How important is it for us to go through something difficult and grow the muscle to overcome it?
53:52 Ryan explains the importance of making choices that derive positive benefits in the most difficult situations.
01:00:40 You are bound to get disappointed by attaching to an outcome that is not yours.
01:02:41 Different people have different ways of consuming information and we should respect that.
01:09:44 When you create a lot of valuable things in life, the returns may double.
01:12:05 Why should you allow yourself to become different things?
01:17:16 Don’t be a copy of your former self, continue to take a leap whenever you can.

This video is a great reminder of how Ryan's insights on discipline and self-control can help us achieve our goals and live more fulfilling lives. I especially liked his point about how discipline is not just about pushing ourselves to do more, but also about knowing when to say no and rest. It’s a balance that requires constant awareness and adjustment. I think we can all benefit from applying some of his principles to our personal and professional lives.

I have gone through a period of questioning a lot of Podcast content to choosing the ones that are going to inspire and challenge me. This one ROCKS! Recently, my partner and I had a slight 'wiggle' in our relationship and we both turned up for change and healing! Now........man we are experiencing stuff so much better than honeymoon periods! I realised that beyond all that I will achieve out there, love (being it, giving it, receiving it) is so damn important. I love giving love! This is 'home'. I'm about to start reading your book Jay. I believe in both of you. I want to celebrate you today (which you don't need as you understand your own value). Thank you for turning up, doing the work, being so committed to remind us, "we can too".

The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

Amazing information always, illness is another humbling experience . time is infinitely more valuable . This isnt a discussion about being miserable Economic and business leaders were voicing concerns at the start of 2023 that the year could be a difficult one. JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said that the Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates to 6% to fight inflation, higher than the peak level between 5% and 5.5% in 2023 that most Fed officials penciled in after their December meeting. Although I read an article of people that grossed profits up to $500k during this crash, what are the best stocks to buy/short now or put on a watchlist.

This is such a nuanced topic. Getting land and generating sustainable methods of food, water, and power management will undeniably have un almost unfathomable impact on your life, and I think everyone would be surprised to find how little that can cost. If you're a wasteful moron and all you want is a million dollars, you'll spend that quickly, and even if you don't, you know its not sustainable or fulfilling you as a part of nature. And if you're totally okay with going back into the matrix, getting a space where you can detach from it and limit the time and money costs of being in it, will undoubtedly be worth it. if you're just wasting your resources, and as such, are still stuck in the matrix, of course you'll be miserable. It's all about where you're trying to go, and where you're trying to go once you get there. Having an attainable and sustainable check point can actually make grinding totally worth it.

I really dislike the hustle culture, its faceless, fake, lying world. There is a great alternative, called the 10 principles of burning man and the four agreements by DMR, and the art of living a displined life with values and walking your talk and empathy. Too bad that 30 years ago this hustle culture really began. People stopped listening to their elders.

The caption for this video is quite self-referential and meta (Toxic Hustle Culture). It's interesting to observe that Jay Shetty leveraged the very same strategies and techniques associated with hustle culture, though he substituted the common get-rich-quick narrative with spiritual bypass content to carve out his niche as an influencer. The paradox of someone who allegedly led a monastic life embodying such vanity and materialism is hard for me to comprehend. Even Steve Jobs, despite his wealth surpassing Jay's, maintained a minimalist lifestyle after his spiritual journey to India. The majority of Indians are all too familiar with the crafty antics of babas and swamis featured on late-night Indian television and commercial breaks. It's fascinating to witness how Jay, a member of the millennial Indian diaspora has given this a contemporary twist. Ryan Holiday is fantastic though, these days it seems podcasts hosts just simply try to stand on the shoulders of giants.
