I started training jiu jitsu two months ago because I got a job at a psych unit where we frequently have assaultive patients and I had a pretty high amount of fear about approaching them. I can honestly say that even just doing two months has given me so much more confidence at work and has caused me to be able to relax and sensibly approach more patients to help them. When they are becoming violent, I am able to think clearer under that stress and cautiously act in ways to help de-escalate the situation or restrain them if necessary. Jiu jitsu is the highlight of my week.

A memory of the past. When I studied Shotokan for several years, my mind realized after awhile that I could deal with at least a start of something physical, that I knew enough to be lethal (strike to throat ) and that a sucker punch would be bad, being knocked unconscious was terrible, and a 2 shot derringer would help. Discretion is the better part of valor. Another memory. Clark Air Base 1988 to 1990, Anesthesia doc at the 13th Air Force Hospital. We had 4 Navy Seals from Subic shadowing us in the OR for a couple of weeks learning/improving their airway skills, intubations, mask/bag ventilation, OPA, etc. as well as IV placements. Surgeons were showing them chest tubes, basic suturing, setting fractures . The OB guys were showing how to deliver babies, C-sections. Pediatricians how to deal with newborns, etc. These guys were like alert wolf-panther people. I mean they were sponges for information, completely focused, totally got the eye hand coordination thing, only needed one walk through and instantly grasped the pitfalls. They were bright eyed and bushy tailed. And at the end they gave us a little wooden plaque thanking our Anesthesia Department for the inter-service cooperation. I hope it survived Pinatubo.

I'd like to share that I've had a few occasions in my life, when fear was overcome by love that was stronger than the fear, and in a few cases, the fear was suddenly replaced with calm boldness. I've never been a fighter and am not a very big man, but the Spirit has put confidence in me that has stopped bigger and badder people in their tracks, caused them to turn and walk away...even a gang of a dozen or more. Absence of fear is conveyed on a subconscious level, but it is conveyed, and when those who would harm you see that you are not afraid, that puts the fear into them.

Fear eats the soul.
@gnarthdarkanen74644 жыл бұрын
Fear is nothing more than a feeling. You feel happy. You feel hungry. You feel angry. You feel afraid... It's perfectly normal and natural, and tells you something if you search yourself for whatever it is that you FEEL afraid of. Investigate that. Learn it. When you know all you need to know about it, and come out the other side, you may still have a healthy respect for it... BUT you'll no longer have that great unknown to be afraid of. Fear is for self preservation. You SHOULD be afraid of walking into a fire (for instance) because it can injure you horribly and permanently if not kill you horribly and outright. It's going to hurt... BUT what do you fear that you shouldn't??? Snakes? They're plenty dangerous, sure. BUT even the venomous ones don't generally desire to waste venom on you, because you aren't part of their menu. That shit's expensive for them to make and it doesn't make itself. It may take days for a "full load" of venom to be produced by a snake. The primary use is hunting/food, and snakes only generally have to eat once or twice a week... Some go considerably longer between meals. SO a healthy respect is appropriate, but outright blood curdling fear? No... not so much. I've wrangled most varieties, by hand... myself... with no more than an ordinary walking cane and a bucket as tools. They're really not so big a deal. Think it through. Whatever you're afraid of... It's probably more about what's unknown than the actual target of your fear, itself. The fear can only devour your soul if you sit idle and let it. ;o)

to me, understanding of the world around you, and particularly the understanding of the level of control you have, is what impacts fear. Understanding what no one controls, and what you control, helps you take control of your life. the most negative people, are usually also those that do not grasp this. As a consequence, life happens to them, in stead of them being in control of their goals, happiness and progress. this equates to fear. Being physically capable is a small part of this, especially in a society where there are laws and bureaucracy to protect you. (yes, I say bureacracy is a good thing, happy to argue the point if someone is interested)

Great topic, and very timely. Perfect love casts out fear. This is not belief, but knowledge. The love of the Great Spirit is revealed to those who will humble themselves to trust our Creator with gratitude for life and everything that makes life worth living. That is very reassuring and convincing, to know that the worst that the enemy can do is to kill me, but I know that the One Who gives life is also able to restore it, and has promised to do so. And if my life is not restored, then it won't matter to me anyway. The dead have no consciousness whatsoever, despite the horrendous lies of the church.

In my experiences living in today’s world, I found that myself at times as well as numerous friends were not living in fear necessarily due to a false sense of security to begin with. Although my situation was quite different than that of many friends. I made fear an auto response out of the necessity to survive in a home with domestic violence. It took me decades to understand this and I’m finally at peace with it. However, it did engrain a hyper awareness and mindfulness that I have taught myself how to switch on and off depending on my surroundings and or environment. It took a lot of work to acknowledge this and even more work to turn it into a useful tool. However, this new found knowledge engrained a sense of self confidence that I never knew I had the possibility of carrying without any effort. You, Jordan Peterson, Eckhart Tolle and most importantly God, had a big roll in helping me achieve this. So I thank you for that. 🙏🏼 @jockowillink

I have never specifically been successful in any fight that I've been in. But I have been challenged, and realizing that fear no matter where you're at conversation, physically, financially, can and will affect your ability to make the best rational decision even with pain as a possible best outcome. Fear doesn't allow you to make any rational decision, because fear is always perceptual. I have to constantly keep myself experiencing what is actually happening. And ask myself, what are my outcomes, and am I really working towards my best solutions versus trying to avoid my perceptual fears.
