A few years ago, I was an aimless loser with a victim mentality. Everything was because of my circumstances. I grew up poor (no running water for years), my dad walked out on me when I was in 7th grade, my stepdad introduced me to drugs and alcohol when I was 15... Blah blah blah. I stumbled into listening to Rogans podcast, where I learned about Cam Hanes, Goggins, and Jocko. The biggest commonality? Discipline. I quit whining... I started buying books instead of drugs. I read Extreme Ownership, then Endure, and more and more. Since then, I've quit using excuses and escaping into drugs. I taught myself to drive a forklift, got a job as a material handler in a steelworking factory... I used my breaks and lunch to teach myself to weld. 3 months later I passed my certifications. A year later, I'm a welder fabricator, robot operator, and started a side hustle. This coming year, I get trained on yet another robot, and my seasonal side hustle will be a fully formed LLC. All of this is thanks to discipline. Constant discipline. It sucked so hard at first. Now, I wake up looking forward to the next bite of suck I get to get through. Thank you Jocko and Echo, for helping me to see The Path. And thank you Echo, for the levity we've all come to expect from you. Merry Christmas everyone.

Good for you!! Super awesome. You’ve unlocked what most people don’t understand: we use discipline to get to a better place, not just to suffer. I’m not religious, but I like this Bible verse a lot: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

Rushing is another form of going nowhere. I remember reading that in a small mindfulness book called 30 Days to Stop Giving a Shit by Corin Devaso. It was a wake up call for me; I was burning out, not being disciplined, because my mind was going all over the place trying to get stuff done without any assigned meaning or purpose. I had deeper things going on. Slowing down and focusing was the solution...I allowed my self to take on one thing at a time slowly, and doing it right, and then I started to build flow and momentum. I believe discipline starts with slowing way down, even stopping, and writing out what is the meaning and purpose of this task, life, job, goal, mission, etc. Once that meaning is found and believed in...you're unstoppable.

Potentially. Agile leadership encourages it, so does the AF. Fast to production prototyping of interim iterations will lead to impossibly fast evolution: when implemented professionally and measured under civilian terms.

@@JDirty-w-tha-30 I can relate. What's helped me is allowing myself to create any meaning and allowing it to change at any time. The meaning can even be to rediscover, search, or help people in any capacity. Helping people in our lives is a quick purpose to adopt.
@youtubebannedmymainchannel

@@JDirty-w-tha-30If you're unsure about your 'purpose' try to find out what's the opposite of your purpose, as an example: A few months back I hadn't found my purpose yet, I was working a shitty job with people whose existence I found humiliating to mankind. Then I decided that I wasn't going to live my life like this and decided to find a purpose. I wasn't sure what I wanted but certainly I didn't want to: Work a shitty job. Be around degenerates. Stay depressed. Always be busy. Get shoved into a bus with smelly random people like sardines in a box. Have unstable sleep patterns. Etc. So my 'purpose' was the opposite of these qualities. I wanted financial freedom, I wanted a good social life, I wanted to feel proud and happy, I wanted free time, I wanted abundance, I wanted health. My current purpose is to be, Stronger. Smarter. Faster. Healthier. Better. FREE. You don't need to pinpoint your end goal in life, you just need to decide its direction, and move towards it.

I’m not allowed to refuse orders by the way, I’m not allowed to have a mutiny, there’s no mutiny allowed, when the General says do it, you’ve gotta DO IT.’” - With that Mindset how can you NOT crush 2024! I'll start tomorrow. 4. It's too cold outside. 5. It's too hot outside. 6. I don't have anyone to work out with. 7.I don't have the right workout clothes. 8. I don't want to mess up my hair. 9. Jock is 100% correct about how hard you must work for any real success. The problem is the inspiration runs out really fast as soon as you begin. Most people can’t deal with the failure, struggle and boredom of getting to the top. They quit before they can even fail for the first time because theres no immediate reward.

Leaving this here as I do not see it mentioned enough : The scientific definition of intelligence includes the relentless and successful pursuit of difficult objectives. Part of this directly tell us that "giving up" is factually unintelligent. So too is never achieving the objective. Combine "never give up" with "fully understand the objective" and you have an intelligent formula for success in any area of life.

Here is a list of ten excuses for not working out today. Jocko is right; I get these in my head: Physical Recovery: "I'm giving my body time to heal and recover from a recent illness or injury. Pushing too hard could set back my recovery." Mental Health Day: "I'm taking a day to focus on my mental health. Sometimes, mental rest and relaxation are just as important as physical exercise." Lack of Sleep: "I didn't get enough sleep last night, and I know that exercising on too little sleep can be counterproductive and even harmful." Overtraining Symptoms: "I've been feeling signs of overtraining, like persistent muscle soreness, fatigue, and decreased performance, so I'm taking a break today." Family Priorities: "I need to prioritize family commitments today. Spending quality time with loved ones is important for my overall well-being." Work-Related Stress: "Work has been extremely demanding lately, and I don't want to add more stress to my body by pushing it too hard in the gym." Listening to My Body: "My body is telling me it needs rest. Ignoring these signals can lead to burnout or injury, so I'm respecting its needs." Scheduled Rest Day: "Today is a scheduled rest day in my workout plan. Rest days are crucial for muscle growth and overall fitness progress." Emotional Exhaustion: "I'm emotionally exhausted today and need to conserve my energy to manage my emotional well-being effectively." Balancing Life's Demands: "I'm trying to find a balance between exercise, work, family, and personal time. Today, other areas need more attention."

I find when I have something to aim at (eg. "I have spent a lot of money on travel to do technical diving courses, I want to be physically prepared for them and look good while doing it") then I can actually execute a daily regimen and then some extra for good measure. But after the goal (the course) has passed it's hard to resume the training at even a more relaxed pace... There are all sorts of excuses such as "I don't have that pull-up bar so I'm bored of my routine" or "I'm under the pump at work, I can't really fit in the workout during lunch time today". Was I running on motivation, or was I using self-imposed discipline that ended up falling apart later?

This is super random and might sound “woe is me” but is there anyone here that was at a similar point in their life to what I’m about to describe - friendless, starting life over at less than 0 (mountain of debt, no career, no idea wtf I want to do) I just started the biggest part of giving myself a fighting chance, got clean from drugs. Now I’m just struggling to find any direction. I have built some horrendous neurological pathways of thinking of all the ways any of my ideas are impossible. If anyone reading this lived through something similar, what steps did you take to rebuild your life?

I was in somewhat of a similar situation but not as bad. So I don’t want to compare. But I’ve been through some hellacious shit. I can tell you this: focus on improving your life 1% every day. It’s small enough that you can do. And every few months you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. The mistake we make is thinking that we can do ALL THE THINGS, now. Humans rarely change that much, that fast. You won’t have everything figured out at once, and that’s ok. Focus on your diet, and physical fitness. Read and listen to good content by people smarter than you, every day. If you have some baggage from the past, deal with that and get your behavior in a good place. Create a budget and a plan for your financial future (I recommend listening to Dave Ramsey). Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) is a great example of a good common sense man who talks a lot about work… from what you wrote, I think you’d find it interesting. We don’t always have to find this amazing, 7 figure income that is “our passion”. Good, honest work is where it’s at. I promise you, whatever you do, if you give it 110%, people will notice and opportunities will open up. Just working hard and having a good attitude will get you very far. Don’t focus on what you don’t have. Don’t focus on your mistakes. Focus on what you have now, today. Today is day 1. Ground zero. Wrap your mind around the fact that it won’t be easy, and it won’t be fast, but nothing in life worth a damn is either of those things. Your path will unfold as you move forward. You’ll be amazed at how life unfolds and your mind expands once you start. Just KEEP MOVING. You do have to have dreams and goals, but you’ll figure those out soon enough. Best of luck.

Love the message except the personal trainer part. Maybe the average person "needs" a trainer to be discipline but not all. For myself I have been working out since my early 20's, I'm a 47 yr old female. I still go to the gym 5 -6 times a week for 2+ hours. I have a trainer because I want to learn more & believe one can always learn and as an introvert I really love the deeper conversations. My dad was in the military and I learned at a young age to be independent, get up early, always make my bed etc. So I think that statement isn't accurate. A personal trainer is a luxury not a need for myself.
