Imagine being in Will Smith's shoes in that moment: In one hand he has his reputation and career, and in the other hand the side eye his wife just gave him. Imagine what kind of mental and emotional abuse the man gets from his "loving" wife that would make him toss away his reputation and career just to fix his wife's disapproving glare. Jocko the story you told about Echo when he responded "That's a pretty fair assessment" makes me want to troll Echo to see what responses he comes up with. That was classic. Regarding the Chris Rock slap incident, I saw a body language expert who pointed out something interesting. If you watch the slap in Slow Motion, Chris starts to make a fist then immediately backs off. There was a split second where Chris was going to punch Will before he restrained himself. There was also another tell that Chris restrained himself as he probably had some insults ready to roast Will immediately after he responded to the yelling when he answered "I'm not going to.. I could... no.." then looks to the side for production instructions. Chris being known for off the cuff responses probably could have eviscerated Will Smith verbally but chose not to do that. This shows the professionalism of Chris and how strong he was in that moment. Chris Rock was the man on that night!!

Cris Rock has earned my respect by the way he handled this situation. I’m a small guy and bigger guys would always try and test how far they could go. My dad told me a long time ago, “There hasn’t been a man born that has won every fight they’ve been in. You don’t have to win but, the other guy better know he was in a fight too”. Big guys, I don’t think, understand that mind set. They assume because a smaller guy didn’t fight back it was because he “ate cheese”. Not necessarily. Cris Rock was covering himself and his family, like a man. He also covered Will and his family like a man. Will, by his actions, placed his future in Cris’ hands. That slap just meant, “I don’t care about myself, my family or, my career”. This fool committed a crime on TV with the whole world watching! The LAPD was chomping at the bit to have Cris arrest Will. Can you imagine?! Well, Cris said, “No” like a man and a friend. We have the luxury of time to analyze what happened and we still don’t realize how quickly Cris thought about and recognized the consequences and controlled himself throughout that entire situation. A true professional, a true man and a good friend. Oh, just one more thing. You mentioned how a slap can get someone’s mind right. That’s only if you’re a gatekeeper to something they consider a benefit. Same thing for buddy fights in the military. Not only no consequence but he still gets his Oscar and is allowed to give a whole speech? Wtf? So rich and famous people really just get to do whatever they want. If you or I did that, we’d still be in jail.

When Will yelled at him the second time and Rock says "Man I could..." and then just continues on - he's a professional comedian, he could have annihilated Will right there. I'm betting a thousand punchlines (lol) were going through his head. For comedians, comedy is often their way to defend themselves. There's a lot more underlying to this situation though. Wills's wife was disrespected and dishonored by having a relationship with one of his son's friends. And didn't even allow him freely express his emotions about it. She's clearly a narcissist and doesn't care as much for him as he does for her. He's probably so sensitive to her emotions running the show and knows how hurt she was about her hair loss, so seeing her reaction he felt needed to defend her somehow as she'll probably find fault with his response afterward making his life hell or using it to cheat on him again. So he's in a difficult spot.

Keep control of your emotions. I was thinking this after I watched this all go down. I thought - here is Will Smith talking about wanting to be a leader and he ruined all of that to get in a slap. Leadership capital - destroyed. Like Jocko said, he could have walked up there after winning, got the mic, and talked about his wife's struggle and making fun of it, and destroyed Chris Rock. But instead, he lost control of his emotions and all he got was a slap out of it. No only that, but this was the PINNACLE of Will Smith's career - this award, and nobody is ever going to remember that. All they will remember is he slapped Chris Rock. Bad use of leadership capital. The ONE thing i have learned from this podcast, and Jocko and Echo------ that I did not have a good handle on----- is you've got to keep control of your emotions at all times or you miss opportunities, destroy your leadership capital. I work so hard now on keeping my emotions in check all of the time, and taking note of the times and instances where I tend to let my emotions get going and watch for them. Thanks Jocko and Echo. Chris Rock insulting this woman for 25 years is not doing his job. Yes, the responses encapsulate this culture where BM, especially, have been trained to humiliate their women and are rewarded for it by the mainstream culture. See "Big Mommas House", "Everbody Hates Chris", Norbit, ShaNayNay, the list is endless, but because this seemed to have been done on behalf of his wife, whom Chris has been roasting for 25 years to Will's chagrin, the mainstream and BM incels push the lone argument that he's just a comedian. No. These people have known each other for decades and Chris Rock was told years ago when he did a hair documentary, how much he hurt the women group whom he humiliated, yet again, using their identities for mainstream humiliation, attention and $$$$. It was and is deeper than, "He is a comedian".

Yes, people have a twisted sense of justice today. It would always be the ones that cries/angry/ gets offended that's "right". All other moral compass fails in front of it. E.g. Doesn't matter that Palestine was the one that shoot missiles to civilian suburbs in Israel. Its always poor palestine, israel the big bully. Just because israel doesn't use their own civilians as body shields.

The thing that I think is missing from the points made in this talk is the unspoken granting of permission. As stated if fellow platoon members get in to a disagreement, they step behind the shed and, with permission, go at it. Same thing in a family dynamic. If a brother is teasing another, and the other is beginning to take offense, usually a warning is issued. The teaser understands that if he keeps going, the unspoken permission is they go at it. Same thing in a dojo (or such). If members are getting on each other's nerves, they can go on the mat and go at it (as the bow signifies permission). For an event such as the Oscars wherein the primary host is a comedian, it is accepted that jokes may be made that you disagree with. BTW...Other comedians that spoke to Rock later that night stated that that joke was handed to Rock by one of the writers - source KZbin Channel Joke WRLD - and I suspect the writers were going for a Ricky Gervais vibe with it). At a comedy club you have the right to leave. You also have the right to engage as a heckler. However, if that escalates, security usually gets involved and you are ejected as you do not have the right to get physical. What Smith did not have here was permission to walk up on stage and slap Rock. Which is why the police were involved as they deemed it "Assault and battery". Also note Smith is the larger build by far. That's an important POV. I doubt the fellas in the talk would walk up to a guy a 1/3 their size and slap them for that joke, I suspect they would have issued a warning. Seems honor would dictate that behavior. So...Permission...there was none in this case. My $0.02. Thanks for coming to my TedX talk!

First i just wanna say i very much respect and appreciate and like the perspectives you(Jocko) and Echo have of this scenario and the feedback of what to do and how Chris Rock went/shoulda went about it, also how Echo explains the scenario of making a joke to a female with the husband/man there is smart and something to think about too. How could Chris have any clue that he would be smacked while standing on stage at the OSCARS! No chance a single person ever would think they needed to change their stance to account for someone hitting them while they were on stage at the academy award show. It’s absurd to apply any normal-life logic to this situation.

Everyone is over thinking this. Will Smith laughed at a joke, turned to his angry wife and saw her disapproval, walked up onto the stage and sucker punched a guy half his size. THAT was a "Bas Ruttan" style strike, more than a slap. Will Smith was so "Hollywood Royalty" that he didn't even get asked to leave. Other A-list actors consoled HIM for it.

Yeah, but shit had clearly been building up for a long time. People have been clowning on Will Smith for years because of him and his wife’s (one-sided) open relationship. Will is emotionally and mentally fragile from years of being emasculated by his wife. He is not a tough guy even though he may act as one in the movies. He laughed and when he saw his wife was upset he ACTED what he THOUGHT a tough guy would do. And he missed the mark. A tough guy would have remained in control of his emotions, waited til after the show and met Chris Rock in the back and dealt with it, now that could have just been words or physical but that's how it would have played out. But he was desperately and pathetically trying to gain the love of a woman who will never truly love him. And he thought by acting that way she might love him.

Not many people have this take but I agree 100%. Jokes are jokes and dudes been through alot publically. They can feel however they feel about it but men settle differences with words and sometimes with action but it's always done personally. Not on stage or in front of friends or to grandstand. This was wills insecurities portraying themselves as what a man would do. When a man would laugh at it in the moment and head to the back after to talk it out.

The real problem is the way everyone at the Oscars reacted (or didn't react). If someone starts a bar fight, you can talk all day about the moral ins and outs, show empathy to them for having a bad day, etc but at the end of the day that person should still be escorted out of the bar and made to calm down. He shouldn't be given a standing ovation later that night for talking about spreading love. At that point, everyone else in the room has made themselves complicit in agreeing to violence as a response to words.

Will smith's best slap couldn't stop a comedian from laughing it off and continuing the show in the most graceful composure I have ever seen in my life. Wasn't even sufficient to solicit the combative reaction from Chris and maybe this is the reason why wifey plays yoga with young boys. He laughs his behind off when jokes are cracked about other people except when the barrel points towards him and play victim later on the podium Problems stem from far way back, 2pac till now. He has been mounting a whole lotto accumulated belittling issues and he sneaked an opportunity to select what he thought and deemed to be a weak prey (Skinny Chris and Old) to make a demonstration by and again prey outsmarted the weak predator and it's going to be bruised for life Then he continues to speak about pain (non-life threatening condition called Alopecia) as if he knows the atrocious struggles that an ordinary African child in Africa has to endure every day for multiple years of lack of basic needs like water and food. Pain from hair loss of his wife joke doesn't even measure to real pains of life Guy is an emotional catastrophe, went from laughing, slapping, profanity, crying and dancing at the after party
