I'm still confused about the connection of the Gentlemen's Agreement (1908) and the growing nativism in California. Does the agreement mandate the end of discriminatory laws against Asian immigrants in California and segregation in San Francisco? What motivated Japan to restrict the emigration of Japanese workers to the US?
