Thank you Barry, this information is priceless to anyone trying to restore one of these cars. After 50 years on the road each car is unique especially when you try and marry old with new... I ended up doing the exact same thing to the front extensions. had to cut the welds all around the headlight bucket so I can manipulate the fender to match the extensions. Wally

Great videos. Definitely reminds me of my pony that I restored 20 years ago and stupidly sold to pay down college debt. now that I’m nearing retirement I’m looking forward doing this again. These videos will be a big help in expanding my technical skills. Thanks-keep up the good work!

Great video Barry, when I was fitting my extensions, I had to slightly enlarge the mounting holes on the rear panel. When they were drilled at the factory, they were off by about 1/8 of an inch or so. After enlarging them, the extension positioned a lot better and I got lucky and didn't have to add any filler there for the transition. Good luck and keep the videos coming. Thanks.

It was good to see Jade! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the tig segment. I could relate lol. You DID look like a rookie for a minute. 😉 Great video.

The conclusion from your discovery of panel shape is to check profile of panels and then unpick spot-welds to correct profile panels.Great video 👍

i feel your pain Barry.. just attempted to do my stainless headers yesterday and made a horrible mess of things.. instantly went inside and started watching youtube videos to refresh. stainless is a pain. i can't even imagine titanium... i'm not that great, but a few huge tips that affect more than you'd think.. the metal must be super clean.. wipe it with acetone... just like you pop quick mig spots, you have to do it even more so with tig.. don't hold an arc long. the metal will heat soak. and if you dip the tungsten, resharpen it.. don't try to keep welding. in reality, body sheet metal is best mig'd. now frame work, tubing, etc.. tig is prettier, cleaner, etc.. i like the effort though. i think you'll love that tig for welding things other than that sheet metal.

Another great vid and information! Thanks! And keep going with the TIG! I just bout one myself and have yet to try it so I'll probably be dipping my tungsten too!

For TIG welding sheetmetal I use MIG wire for filler. Try to keep your filler wire the same diameter or smaller than the base metal. Especially for thin material like automotive panels.

i have seen a few videos now on "modifying sheetmetal" and what comes to my mind... often they are bend nearly correctly but forced and then welded into a wrong spot.... not always. but often just relasing the spotwelds seems to make a big diffrence... then a lil bit of "massaging" and they seem to fit pretty decently

The quarter panels and the extensions on my ´67 are original. The outer, larger curves follows the quarter panel nicely. The shorter concave curves, where they meet the decklid, do not match. I'm still debating wether to break the spot welds loose on the quarter panel or just leave it as it left the factory. I need a new decklid as well and need to have that in place before I make a decision. But that will have to wait until I've installed subframe the connectors that are lying on the garage floor. There are cracks in the quarter window area and dimples in the roof, above the rear glass from the vehicle twisting and flexing all it's life.

Factory quarters? I would leave them the way they are if it's not too bad. I would likely use filler to shape them together.

Love the vids, been following the pony for awhile now been whatching another guy also, Peterson Restoration ... But I like the detail you cover so much more of the process. I've got a 69 falcon coupe, needs some front torque box and rail repair. How similar to a mustang do you think that is???
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I believe they're almost the same as the Mustang. You will need to see if the 69 is the same as the 69 mustang.

So is the lesson from Brooklyn, Jade and Wally’s that I should bring the qtr extensions in as part of the quarter fitment before weld the first time?
@JoDaddysGarage2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea for sure.

MiG is less heat! Try moving the tungsten in more and putting the cup on the metal and rocking it back and forth. I have a question with all the Different panels and manufactures of said panels do you leave on the factory primer or do you scuff them up before you paint primer on the panels ? Thanks for all your videos!!!! 👍🏻
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the material on the panel. Some coatings are temporary. I've heard a simple test is to wipe the panel with lacquer thinner and see if it comes easily. If it does, it all needs to come off. With my experience, I will sand it off and spray with epoxy primer.
@acoow4 жыл бұрын
TIG isn't a very good option for sheet metal anyway. Too much heat for too long. With TIG, you need to treat it kinda like oxyacetylene welding. Build a puddle from both parts being welded, then add metal with the rod in your other hand. Keep that rod close so that it is slightly molten at the tip. Dip. Move. Dip. Move. Dip. Move. Dip. Move. Dip. Move. Dip. Move.

I have been oxy welding and mig welding even mma /stick for years more as a hobbyist than professionally but got to say Tig welding is for Martians as far as I'm concerned!!! stay well and be safe

I really enjoyed watching you teach yourself to tig weld I've been looking at the vulcan tig machine that does aluminum for $999...do you think the tig 165 you have was worth the money?
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I do. I just need to do learn more, and take my time. I do love my mig though.

Thanks for these videos. I am working on a '68 coupe. It looks like you don't use the rubber gaskets on the extensions - is this true? I have new gaskets but can understand they modify the look somewhat. I've already had to correct the height of the new quarter in the back by drilling the spot welds and adjusting. The repo sheet metal requires a lot of attention and I've learned a lot from your videos.
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I don't like the gaskets. I won't be using them.

wire is to heavy try .045 or even.035 keep that tungsten sharp and turn down your gas.Also make sure the metal is clean no paint to nothing.Tig hates dirt paint rust oil ect.

Did they line up all that great from the factory?
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
They were likely a little off. Even from the factory, there were issues. Of course all the aftermarket panels have issues.
