There's always fitment issues with the quarter and extension. Here's how I fixed it. There may be other ways, but this worked the best for me.
Dura Block: amzn.to/2MJQmDt
Round Dura Block: amzn.to/2Wzf8Wc
Best value Dura Block kit: amzn.to/2WBVHfu
Body filler: amzn.to/2MT2YIy
3/4" masking tape: amzn.to/31pAzwK
Masking tape combo pack: amzn.to/31vBQ5g

You, sir, are a craftsman! Your work is definitely better than the factory. I am old enough to remember the cars when they were new, and the panels didn't fit as well as what you've done. Remember, they cranked out Mustangs as fast as they could. They didn't have time for finess.

Nice work progressing. Have to agree with the filler vs. steel on the quarter. Whenever something strikes that edge, you're going to have damage, no matter what you use. The filler is easier to work with, so it makes sense.

I just went through this on my 69 Mustang. The match up between the extensions and the quarter panels was terrible and that's with all the original panels and extensions. So I did something sort of similar to what you did. I pulled the quarter extensions back away from the edge of the quarter panel so they matched up to the deck lid better and then I used about an 1/8" of Dyna-Glass to add material back to the outside of the extensions so they match the quarter panel contour. Dyna-Glass should have decent rigidity and durability to use this way. Then I finish it with a skim coat of Rage Ultra. We'll see how it holds up. I think it should do just fine.

I note that you never mentioned the use of a seal in the extension which may take up a bit of that difference to the deck lid. I was surprised to find the exact same body filler corrections used on my 66 coupe, but I found too much filler was used and filled in some of the contours of the extension on mine when only a slight touch is needed to smooth out the factory imperfections. It is a really nice piece to handle and shape though isn't it? These corners as well as the headlight buckets have such beautiful styling not seen in other cars.

The filler panel never fit perfect when new. You always have to make them fit unless you want it to be like factory. Door gaps hood gaps deck lid gaps were not perfect either. Even side to side everything is different. Nobody notices on them when new but bring it for repair and they see everything. Even now new cars aren't perfect especially US built cars. Imports have closer tolerance gaps. Your doing a great job. Ive did that on many old cars i build for customers. 👌

Great job Barry, need to do the final cleanup as well on my extensions as well now. Got them lined up great but will probably end up cutting a slit in the quarter panel to get the edges to line up properly. Does those extensions have any type of rubber gasket between the quarter and the extension? My 73 extensions call for a rubber gasket/seal between them and the quarter. Thanks as always for posting these videos, they really help us out.

When mig welding has it been your experience that the setting on the machines are close? I've been getting a lot of blow through trying to weld old to new metal. I see your settings are like 2/2, I'm using an Eastwood Mig 135, 3 setting on the arc volts & 3.5 on the feed. I keep turning it down, but it doesn't look like it's penetrating really well. So, metal work or filler work? Filler is a good idea if you want fast results that can be fine tuned with less effort. When money and time are short, in the real world, this is what gets done. But, metal-working that edge is what most people watching this want, especially if they have dreamed of having the time and money and space to do it themselves. Watching these types of videos is all about wish- fulfillment. Watching youtube videos is NOT about reality. Watching youtube is NOT about getting informed; It's about fantasy. It's about the viewer getting satisfaction that is just not possible for them in real life. They are living their fantasy through you and looking for the satisfaction they cannot get on their own. And they need to believe you, and believe in you to maintain that fantasy. For every person who might actually use what you show, there are 100,000 who will never remember anything but the joy or disappointment or frustration or satisfaction from having watched you do it. You, all youtubers, are entertainers. Of your viewers, 1 in 100,000 might learn something. 1 in a million might use what they learn. So the vast majority of the rest of us are just looking to feel better. To dream of something that is just out of reach. The vast majority of us watching you don't have the space or the money or the time or the skill. We just want that feeling of satisfaction we can't get at our shitty jobs and in our down-sized lives. You insult the vast (and silent) majority of us when you disappoint us with such an unsatisfying choice. This was our fantasy and you spoiled it with body filler. We watched you. All those episodes, all those satisfying details. We trusted you! And now you have cheated us! None of us would ever buy that car now. And none of us would ever want to believe that we would do this. YES, in reality, we might all fail even more tragically. But we don't want to see it. We don't want to watch someone do that. We want to applaud your epic and heroic struggle for our own selfish satisfaction! We crave it like a drug. And we craved it from you. At least we used to. But now you cut the purity with plastic filler. And all you have to do is fix it. Make it right. Gouge out that shit and get welding! If you do this we (the vast silent majority) will weep with tears of joy. For you will be the one in a billion who understands what you are to us, especially to all of us who could never find the words to say all this and just mash the "thumbs down" button instead. This is what it is to be an entertainer, to step out in front of a faceless and empoverished mass of suffering human life. If you step forth into that light you had better be tough and heroic and sensitive to our selfish and painfull yearning. We need you to be better than us so we can feel hope. If you can't maintain that (and not many can), we'll turn on you with an anonymous and cruel contempt. This is why you have so many down votes on this video.
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Moe, Thank you for the comment. I'm sorry you're disappointed with this video. You make compelling points, and I commend you for that. Few will take the time to type out what they may be feeling. I understand your opinions, but I also have difficulty with considering myself an entertainer. That would devalue those that are actual entertainers in this vast universe. Implying that people are here just for the fantasy escape from their daily lives also implies I have an obligation to provide that for them. I guess I don't feel the same way. I try to make it a reality for the viewers. I try to make my videos in such a way that everyone can learn something from them. I try to take into consideration that not all have the same experience, or tools at hand. I make every effort to keep my videos "clean" so no one has to worry about what words I may use. I spend hours recording, editing, and like this, responding. I understand the frustration of unanswered questions. I have helped countless people with emails, texts, and actual phone calls. I have talked with people in other countries to help them solve problems. I doubt there are many other youtubers that actually do all that. Or at most they have a hired hand or two to handle it. Perhaps the fantasy of perfection has been created by misleading reality shows. They rarely show their actual work, and for good reason. They are in it for the profits. They are skimming the surface for the production limits required by the show. In this case, I stand by my choice. Again, thank you for your comment. Take care, Barry

I strongly disagree with the statements made by this viewer. Not looking to get into a fruitless pissing match but I see youtube and in particular this channel as a chance to make my dreams a reality. I come here like many others to get the information and inspiration I need to tackle the jobs I would ootherwise not have the confidence for. Not only is Barry knowledgeable he is in this for all the right reasons. Its not about making a buck or becoming a famouse entertainer. To me people like him are rare and priceless. I guess it comes down to choice. You can be a dreamer or make dreams reality. I have learned to plumb, lay tile for my dream shower and even fix my dryer among other things all because of people like Barry and KZbin. Filler has a place and he uses it the way it should be used. I have been to fabrication shops where panels are made by hand by masters of the trade. They finish with filler as well. Keep em coming Barry. I am sure there have been many costly mistakes made to get you where you are today that might have slowed us or even stopped some from completing their projects. Because you pass this knowledge on to your followers we can avoid this pain and bring us closer to a finished product.

Not all of us would have the tools and more so skill to to weld additional metal on and grind back off to form the crease. That would take a lot of time and patience. Keep up the good work. Wish I was heading down there for the super bowl , I would love to meet you and pick your brain on my mustang project. In the meantime I will continue to learn from your videos. Keep them coming, I can’t wait to see it finished.
