Even way back then at such a young age you could see the incredible screen presence of this great actress ..... when she is on screen nothing else matters ....... simply amazing. If I were the head of a movie studio I would have already signed her to a multi-movie deal. It's pretty obvious that Jodie Comer can do anything.

this whole movie is too good for hollywood and the message is strong, its prob why its not listed on imdb :( Letita wright and Jodie Comer are both extraordinary int his movie, and its not listed for either of them, they deserve so much credit here! Just saw Letita again in an episode of Black Mirror, she was great in that one, and ofc Jodie is amazing in whatever she makes as well! Loewe!

@shawn bla I think the main theme of the film is the sexist education girls receive regarding sex, and the impact this education has on their experiences and identity. That's where Hanna's suffering comes from seeing her best friend lose her virginity to a random boy; Ideas such as female virginity is sacred, or the criminalization of female desire and pleasure (a girl is a slut if she enjoys having sex) are the trigger of the conflict which both protagonists struggle whith, particularly Hanna. That's why is so meaningful Gemma lose her virginity, it helps to illustrate the all conflict.

I just watched this twice through and I believe the reason Hannah is returning to Sierra Leone is for the coming-of-age tradition/ceremony of female circumcision. There is that one scene where her mother is telling her that her grandmother's mother, her grandmother, and she had had it. Then Hannah asks if it hurts and she said "a little bit." I think this is the reason for the title "Big Girl."

Why do I feel like Hannah was secretly in love with Gemma? Does anyone else feel that? And I get the sense that there was this silent acknowledgement between the two of them that Gemma knew, or at least thought that it could be the case. Hannah was upset with her, and I don't think it was simply for Gemma getting her into trouble at school. There must have been a reason why she mentioned that she was a lesbian and seemed so hurt when her friend had sex with a random boy just for the sake of it. She was jealous and she also hated the fact that Gemma didn't seem to know her own worth. I think that in the end, Gemma realised that the feelings weren't one-sided. She was forced to acknowledge her own feelings when faced with the reality that Hannah was leaving. That's just my initial reading anyway watching this through once. I could just feel so much tension between them, something heavy....
