Union workers in the United States were responsible for creating the highest standard of living, in the world that resulted in a middle class workforce. Until, the leadership of the Reagan Administration declared war on them in the 1980s. At that time nearly 35 percent of the the workers belonged to unions. After decades of right wing propagana that convinced the work force that unions were evil, around 10% of the workforce is unionized. Since that time, the standard of living of the workforce in the U.S. has decreased to the point were many of them have become the working poor. Their wages have remained basically stagnate for the past 40 years. With some common benefits being eliminated from their compensation altogether. This left many, some working 2 and 3 jobs dependent upon government subisides for the basic necessities of human existence, food, clothing, housing, and medical care. Not to mention the fact that in order to get a higher education for a better job, they become saddled with an enomous debt that financially cripples them. In the coming years with the increasing introduction of AI into the automation and advanced computerized process, there will be a need for a Guaranteed Basic Income to provide for those basic necessities, and share in the benefits of those labor saving devices. Fat Chance!

Well, thanks Howard for saving me writing essentially the same thing. I will just add that because we have a 'Middle-class' we still have a Democracy and the middle-class will continue to be essential in supporting our Democracy and the democracies around the world. The 40+ year attack on the middle-class may be coming to and end, but the challenge to it goes on by corporations and Republicans and corporate Democrats. They have enslaved us to a depreciating dollar and diminished wages and buying power. They are doing it again by applying excessive profits to products and services and blaming it on hard fought for raises in the minimum-wage and other wages/incomes And Sam, Joe Biden is sincere in his support of the Middle-class and Unions. Apparently you haven't been paying attention to US politics of late. Biden has been front & center in support of unions and increasing the living wage and employing Americans with good jobs. He knows that a sound and healthy middle-class is essential to preserving our Democracy and what that means to the rest of the world. Our version of the shining light on the hill may dim on occasion(GAZA/Ukraine & other situations), but it is still there so there is still hope for a civil progressive world.

As long as the auto executives keep earining outrageous millionaire salaries, the auto assemblers would think there is enough money for them if they become unionized. Auto executives need to shrink their salaries whenever the company starts to loose money.

@@autoselectricos-americalat9276 I don't understand your reasoning. Let me give you another example. NBA players get paid a lot. They didn't used to get paid much because the NBA didn't make as much money as it does now. But now a tiny difference in player ability can make a team win (and get lots of money) or lose (and lose a lot of money). If a team loses a streak of games, the players do not get a pay cut as punishment (which I'm assuming you're saying the GM execs should). If anything, the pay should be increased because that would attract better players, and the increase in pay would be earned back many times because the team would get much more money.

Right now you have protectionist policies in place putting barriers in the way of cars that aren't manufactured in the USA from the US market, and because of that, these workers think they don't have to worry about being competitive with workers elsewhere. And in the case of the Ford and GM workers at least, they figure those companies are "too big to fail", and if they crash and burn , the government will bail them out (again). But I think in the long term, that kind of thinking will catch up with them. I think companies will prioritise automating many of those jobs out of existence, I think they will prioritise investing in places with lower labour costs, I think eventually the protectionist policies will swing the other way, and they won't be able to compete. I hope they enjoy their short-lived victory though.

Beginning with the Reagan administration a vast propaganda effort began to convince people that unions were evil. With the decline of the the unions from 35% to 10% of the workforce. The standard of living for the American working class also declined. Wages and benefits remained stagnant, and failed to keep up with the cost of living increases. In 1981 the federal minimum wage was 3.35 until 1990, it was raised to $3.80. in 2009 it was increased to 7.25 where it remained. Until this year, 2024, when it was raised to $11.00. State minimums differ. However, 55 percent of the U.S. workforce works for minimum wage. That's why we need unions.

The same of course applies to American Car Brands in China. Given China is the 2nd or 3rd largest car market in the World it will decimate GM and FORD if they can't sell cars in China. What's with the anti union slant on this channel Sam? I get that you're a self made man so congratulations to you, but most of us have to work for medium and large organisations that continually push to keep pay and conditions as low as possible. Having a union is often the only way for workers to be treated fairly. Workers rights, pay and conditions are usually lower in China than the West. This fact is not a good thing for them, or for us. Do we really want to live in a society were workers go back to being working slaves?

The way Tesla workers work does not allow for specific roles. Today you might be putting on wheels, tomorrow you may decide to work on that line machine that's not punching parts correctly. In other words there are no defined roles per se at Tesla. Engineers are just as likely to be polishing a car as they are to be working on coding the robot that checks the luster of that paint. Unions have to define roles by there very nature. One has to be able to "rise up through the union ranks" or there is no way to have leaders in the union. Tesla's organization is that its workers self-organize to get things done. This is a 180 from how unions work as they enforce roles and define them.... this Tesla work method and unions are like oil and water. If a union was designed for Tesla it might be something like a randomly rotating workers safety council. No union member would be more important than any other member and there would be no ranks to climb.

The average tenure of a Tesla production worker is less than 6 months. That's how good the working conditions are. The Tesla worker does not "decide" what work they are going to do. Elon Musk would rather destroy all of his plants rather than deal with a union.

Very true. Tesla separates the wheat from the chaff very quickly. What is amazing is how many folks are long term employees given the fast pace that Tesla works at. There are a lot of folks who come into Tesla not understanding the pace and performance that they will have to hold themselves to in order to keep up with their coworkers. Those may leave or they may step up their game. Then there are a lot of people who want to pad their resumes by having Tesla on it. These go in for a short stent so they can do so. Kind of like saying you have gone through bootcamp. From all accounts Tesla is a very mission focused and enjoyable place to work but at a maddening pace. Because they do not have managers per se decisions to do something or not are almost instantaneous. This means from deciding something needs doing to just doing it is immediate.... there is no down time waiting for management decisions etc. This super fast decision making results in a fast pace work environment. Basically Tesla keeps A+ players who can come in every day and give their A game. Regular folks eventually leave and go on to less fast pace jobs.

But you can exercise those earliest in 2028. Tesla is trading 20-30% of their salary to quite a volatile bonus plan and at best (in the last four years) the employees got broken even-ish. If you were in 2019 and were still employed by Tesla in 2023 you had a great payday. So you have to survive the churn and corporate politics for four years, too.

If you were employed by Tesla 2018/2019 to 2023 you had a huge payday. Otherwise - not so.
