I love Joe Bonamassa, but Greg inhabits a higher plane of existence to almost every other guitarist I've seen. I've never seen anyone as good at improvisation; he seems to live his whole musical life outside his comfort-zone, but you'd never know. Inspiration bypasses his brain and flows directly out through his fingers as beautiful music in whatever style he decides. Greg Koch and Guthrie Govan are the two most inspiring and inspired guitarists that I've come across so far.
@chingasofarkaso9 жыл бұрын
+Peter Marshall I totally agree. I love Joe and there are plenty of other guitar players that I'd put higher on a list who have been an inspiration to me when it comes to playing.....but there is no doubt that Greg is the best, most smooth, soulful guitar player on the planet. I feel luck to have discovered him through this channel because his playing just never gets tired.

Greg Koch, the most talented, and unfortunately, under-rated guitar slayer on the planet. I'm a big fan of Joe's, seen him multiple times in concert, great player, one of the best blues artists for sure! HOWEVER, I finally got to see Greg in a hole-in-the-wall bar in Tulsa, got to sit 10' feet in front of him with about 10 other people, and it was the most entertaining, incredible performance I've ever seen. Amazing, enjoyable and down-right mind-blowing. I've seen about all the greats, and played myself for 40 yrs, but Greg has the biggest guitar vocabulary of anyone I've ever seen and the creativity to use it! Guess I'm done, going back to work now...

I think the reason Greg is not as popular as other guitar players is that he doesn't fit into any one category of music. He's not blues, he's not country, he's not rock, he's not jazz...he's all of that! I have been transcribing some of his songs and just marvel at his chord choices. I find myself asking "who does this and why does it work so well?" Greg has become my favorite guitar player and youtube personality. All hail the Gristle!!
@sgtcaco Жыл бұрын
It’s kind of like those diminished 7 runs he does that sit just off beat, he can get away with a lot of dissonance when bringing the notes back home, he has mastered that, also helps when you no all the extended jazzy inversions. True Master, I have played all my life and heard all the greats, Koch is the player of all players, there is one guy that comes close but I forgot his name, very similar.

What I like about Joe Bonamassa is he's not afraid to showcase and jam with other great guitarist ! There's this running discussion with Prince fans that believe he was the greatest guitarist ever but how can you determine that if he never got in the ring with other great guitar players ! I know it's not a competition but when someone carries themselves with a certain arrogance and claims to be the best without cutting heads with the best available guitarist then I feel it's bs.. When Joe and Eric Gales traded licks on that blues cruise video that was one of the best trade- offs I'd ever seen between two guitarist.. They both had fun but were pulling off amazing passages... Never seen the purple dude do anything remotely close to that !!!
