As an older player myself, I am very impressed with how respectful Joe is towards these old legends. He doesn't try to shine or dominate, instead he tries to make them shine. It's wonderful to see, and it warms my old heart. Never change Joe!

Eric is absolute guitar royalty. He's an old timer now, but he's still a competitor. Guitar players, especially high level players are viciously competitive. This young kid comes in and he's polished. This makes Eric feel like a young guy again. He's always seemed very polite and proper. That's because he's always as good or better than the other players. He's never threatened. A killer comes in and he's gonna sit up in his seat and drive with both hands. Love to see that dynamic.

I never tire of hearing this song and watching Joe & Eric play off each other! I read once that Joe said he played it pretty much exactly as he had learned it as a child from Clapton’s recording, and he was somewhat wishing he had improvised something new for this performance with Clapton. But not so fast.....I think Clapton is really enjoying this tribute to his own work…and I’m sure it was an honor for him to hear Joe play it perfectly! Clapton looks very pleased.

At the same time you can see the smile and glint in Eric's eye as he recognizes the huge talent that is Joe Bonamassa unfolding before him. Joe tells a story about this where he was little-kid-nervous about inviting Eric to come and see him play at Albert Hall -- not because it was Albert Hall, but because Eric had done such an ep[ic performance there. He said he would have played at some pub if Eric had playered there as well. Eric accepting the invite. Joe said Eric's support essentially endorsed Joe as a player. Joe was sop gracious about Eric, and Eric was gracious in return. This is what sports calls sportsmanship. We all stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us.

@Torrie Seager I'm glad you are confident in your opinion, as I am in mine. Cheers, :) By the way, the term "overrated" is a slippery one. Who is doing the rating, what is the criteria? Really, it is simply individual opinions that can not be measured, or rated at all. They are just observations based on our personal feelings, informed or not. No big deal.

A classic. I loved Rovin Trowers version with James dewar on vocals. This is great. Love the blue color of Clapton's guitar. It's translucent beautiful. Great trade off between the two. Complimentary not competitive. Nice and in the pocket like it should be. Not easy for two greats to do. Sometimes one overdoes it or they both lay back too much. This is solid.

Two guitar greats who always make all the other musicians sound great. They serve the song. Egos aren’t at play, it’s “how can we make this sound greater than ever?!” Like when I listen to Joe and Beth Hart, I have to go back and re-listen to the guitar playing because he sublimates into her singing. It’s like, “Oh yeah, that was some smokin’ FIRE guitar!”

When they start playing you can see Eric is just a little unsure of how they are going to work together. But, as they go through the song, hand the ball back and forth and start to jell he relaxes. By the end when they are jamming together he has a smile on his face and they are just so in tune with each other. As Mark, my brother by another mother God rest him, used to say. Cool beans.

I've grown up with Clapton's music and his imprint on my preferences and tastes probably disqualifies me as an objective critic of his work. His playing style and sweet sound are foundational for me and for a long time now, his voice too. I don't like ranking top musicians so I won't. I'll just say that he and B.B. King developed the blues vocabulary most eloquently spoken in their overlapping eras. What a legacy they've left. Without personal envy, I wish I'd learned to make music competently when I was young. Of all the arts, it's the most expressive, direct and the easiest to share with others which is what we're doing right here.

Joe I know from your interview that you were amazed that Eric not only knew who you were but was happy to play with you,, I suspect that Eric was thrilled that you asked him and had been hoping for some time that you would cause he looked to be in his happy place playing with you,,, As a guitarist im nowhere near your league but I sure hope that one day i get stuck in a room full of guitars with you !!! I was lucky to see you last time you came to Auckland, I will be first in line for tickets if you ever get to come back, maybe you will surprise us all and sneak down to Hamilton on blues club night when you finally do get back here !! Thank you for inspiring me to keep playing !!
