With exceptions, it was just as much simple bars, about shooting, drug dealer/ drug taking and similar beats back then. In fact Em was so big in part because he changed a lot of that. EVEN though he rapped about drugs all the time, it was about taking typically white trash or suburban shit shit like xans, oxys etc. I know he didnt invent that shit, ThreeSixMafia and others did it too but still. And EVEN though he rapped about guns and murder etc, he did it in a jokey way. I watched a doco recently that made me think of him REAL difference too. Referred to a bunch of fvxked up lyrics in his old funny songs that I assumed were pure lowkey horrorcore. 'It all started when my mother took my bike away, cos I murdered my guinea pig and put him in the microwave..' That actually happened. He was like 5 and not tryna kill it, just a dumb kid tryna warm it up but still made me really think about even some of his ridiculous stuff having truth in them. And there are Last thing, some dudes that are really looked down upon as being borderline retarded: ie Kodak Black, NBA Youngboy, those guys are truly talented with deep lyrics. Not Em, Nas, Jay deep but more so than most big name new york rappers out in the late 90s, 2000s. And the biggest rappers in the world are still really your Kendricks, Coles etc. Basically consious rappers. Theres just a lot more diversity now. You have to hunt a litte bit.
