Jaranis927 LOLLLLLL, I respect Mayweather’s accomplishments and he is pretty smart in the ring but he is nothing compared to the greats such as Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Liston, Holyfield, or even Holmes. Ali was definitely in his prime in 66 Ali didn't even leave first gear against chuvalo in the 60's and was letting him hit his body and still won almost every round without sticking and moving go watch how Ali actually started trying in the last couple rounds against chuvalo shit man he could've turned chuvalo face into hamburger way worse than he did ...same with Floyd Patterson in the 60's Ali didn't turn up the heat till round 12 and look how that bout ended .Ali in his prime didn't leave first gear most of the time but in the 70's he had to dig deep to get those victories ..Ali wouldn't have been cought with all those hooks in his prime , notice in the Ali Frazier rematch Ali was trying to relive his prime ..

Its sad how these guys struggle to speak now days, the referees allowed fighters to fight bloodied and beat-up till they couldnt stand-up anymore, 15 rounds and all that, now days they stop fights alot faster, they learned from the brain damage that these true legends have suffered from. For me, the most exciting fighter ever. In addition to letting fights go too long in his day, training for fights was destructive as well, with guys beating each other up in the gym for weeks ahead of their bouts.

Joe was a great champion with a huge heart. There was no quit in him. Wish we could have seen him and Ali fight before Ali's 3 1/2 year suspension. That's a long time out of the ring. Both would have been in their prime then.

Joe would never be an easy fight for Ali. I'm always amazed that people missed many of Ali's flaws as a boxer and when these flaws were exposed by Frazier, Norton etc. these people pretend his 36 month rest was the cause of his shortcomings. No that's not true, Ali was simply exposed as time went on and the competition grew

I'm one of those people that pretend that Ali's 42-month layoff was the cause of his flaws as a boxer. The reason I pretend to believe that is because I actually believe it is true. The layoff was the great equalizer that allowed lesser fighters to have the opportunity to compete with him. For, as great as Frazier, Norton, and Foreman were; they were lesser fighters when compared to the pre-layoff Ali. I don't believe they would have offered Muhammad any real competition at all if not for the layoff. Things did work out for the best, however. The layoff leads directly to the Fight of the Champions, Super Fight II, the Rumble in the Jungle, the Thrilla in Manila, and all the other great battles of this amazing era. No layoff and Muhammad (flaws or no flaws) walks over all those guys. It would have been far less exciting and Muhammad would most likely not be the world-wide icon he is today.

Are you aware that Ali sparred with novice professional Ken Norton in a boxing gym packed with on lookers in Los Angeles in 1967? Norton manhandled him just as he did twice in 12 rounders during 1973 and again in NYC, during 1976. And how about George Foreman, people forget he retired from boxing for 120 months and then it took him nearly another 90 months to regain the title. George's hiatus makes Ali look like a weekend off from the job.

The public missed the best of Ali during his layoff thats a fact and to come back and fight a guy like joe after a couple of fights shows how great he was. Joe is my second favourite fighter was as tough as they come.

There is no way Dundee would have let him quit. If you watch the end of the 14th, up until when Futch called the fight, Ali was being rubbed down, with his gloves firmly on. Remember, he wanted Dundee to cut his gloves off the the fifth round of the first Liston fight after being blinded. Dundee refused and pushed him back out.

When Ali came back after the long layoff he lost his legs which was his first line of defense and a big reason why he started getting hit more often. In the 60's when he had his legs he would hit you and his legs would take him out of range before you can return fire. He wasn't as good at doing that in the 70s but still was plenty great enough to be either the champion or number one Contender for the better part of 20 years

@arabion knights Ali may have had bad "habits". as you say, but he was far more talented than any of the others, which enabled him to get away with it. As he got older, his style changed, though it wasn't done overnight. His style evolved over the remainder of his career.

Sadly, I don't think Joe remembered the Thrilla in Manilla at the time of this interview. Notice his answers are very generic, and he says he doesn't talk about individual fights. Pretty sure that's because he can't remember them. Frazier and Ali literally killed each other.

Rocky fish bullshit his eye was for a lot of the fight closed halfway, these days it would have been stopped Frazier eye was closed for the last round and the doctor wouldn't let him out for the last round you really think Ali was anywhere near going down. Doctor choose to stop the fight than let Frazier go through 3 more minutes. Both these fighters were all heart and would never stop until told to

Let me preface this by saying that Joe Frazier was a great heavyweight champion and certainly was as tough as they come. But that "legend" that Ali was about to throw in the towel at the end of the 14th round of the Manila fight is a flat out myth that was perpetuated by that propaganda HBO documentary Thila in Manila, but it was total bullshit. Ali may have have been exhausted by the end of the 14th round of that fight, but no way would he had forfeit the world heavyweight title with just one round to go against an opponent that was for all intents and purposes already defeated. Contrary to the lie told in this "documentary," Ali had a commanding lead going into the last round of that fight and Joe by that time was blind and defenseless. Futch wisely decided to end the bout because he knew that the risk of Joe getting seriously hurt far outweighed the remote likelihood of him KOing Ali, which at that point was what he needed to win that fight. At the end of the 14th round, the ring doctor came in the ring to examine Joe and this too was what prompted Futch to end it.
