Bob Foster lost to Joe Frazier by KO at 0:49 in round 2 of 15
Date: 1970-11-18
Location: Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan, USA
Referee: Tom Briscoe
World Boxing Council Heavyweight Title (1st defense by Frazier)
World Boxing Association Heavyweight Title (1st defense by Frazier)
Frazier was a 5-1 favorite.
The fight was televised in 27 countries.
The fight was shown on close circuit television in 110 locations in 91 U.S. cities.
A crowd of 18,036 at Madison Square Garden paid $196,026 to watch both the closed circuit telecast from Detroit and a live fight between George Foreman and Boone Kirkman, which Foreman won by a second-round knockout.
Frazier was guaranteed $150,000 against 40 percent of the gate, and Foster was assured 22½ percent of the net gate.
There was an estimated crowd of 5,500 in the 12,500-seat Cobo Arena. The $3,800 $10 seats were filled, but there were numerous vacancies in the $50 seats and hardly anyone at all in the $100 ringside seats.
Frazier was the aggressor in the first round as Foster moved and boxed. In the second round, Frazier sent Foster to the canvas with a left hook to the jaw. Foster struggled to his feet on rubbery legs and was allowed to continue. Frazier bored in and put him down again with another left hook to the jaw. Foster was counted out 49 seconds into the second round.
After Frazier knocked him out, Foster went back to his dressing room in a daze. At one point, he began putting his boxing shoes back on.
"What are you doing?" trainer Billy Edwards asked.
"Getting ready to fight!" Foster said.
"Nah," Edwards said, "the fight's over, son."

Joe was actually jabbing very well here. He threw a couple of good right uppercuts, but if he'd used his right hand more for power shots e.g., body and head hooks and more uppercuts, he could have taken him out sooner. His defensive was also stellar. Between rounds (per Joe's bio) Durham yelled at him "I told you not to give that skinny bastard any punching room! No go back out there and get rid of him." So you can see Joe turned up the burners even more for the 2nd. Foster had Foreman's height and reach, but alas not those extra 35 pounds and parallel strength, so no case here of leaning on Joe, pushing him back and then teeing off. The other major style factor is notice how Foster punches down with just straight shots, versus the uppercut hooks from down under George threw. Joe was great at bobbing and weaving under straight shots from taller guys, but the from under shots would catch him b/c he was already down there. I ran a mile with Joe in the winter of '78 and we shook hands afterward so I could perceive his height with accuracy. I'm 6'0 even and he was at least two inches shorter and we were wearing the same kind of sneakers (minimal heel on those old converse). As Foreman said "Joe never saw 5'10" Like Tyson, he listed at 5.11.5 but was in fact just 5'9. Check out any pic of him standing with son Marvis (6'0+) and you'll see the dramatic dif.

Height,reach, has always been overrated in boxing. It's matchips,skills & styles. Frazier & Tyson had no trouble reaching bigger fighters in their primes. Dempsey bludgeoned Willard. Dwight Quawi dominated a deep, talented Light heavyweight division at 5' 7".

"The one man who never takes a backward step in the ring." Goddamn right. Thank you very much for posting this fight! As a die hard Joe Frazier fan, I'm very grateful. Was Joe Louis drunk when he made his prediction lol? Frazier had 20+ pounds on Foster and was at the height of his powers. No disrespect to the great Joe Louis, but some of his predictions were really atrocious during these years.

Joe was just too big for Bob Foster. I don't know what the official weigh-in was for this fight, but Bob Foster doesn't look like he weighs more than a 185-190 pounds at the most. Joe usually came in around 210-215. That's just too big of a difference to overcome. I would have liked to have seen Dwight Braxton against Bob Foster, both of them and their prime, and both in top physical condition.

Many people were duped into thinking Bob had a chance against Smokin' Joe...he simply was outmatched. Joe Louis...the Brown Bomber...happens to be my favorite in History. But yes...he sure was wrong here if he predicted Bob would win, however, he's right about the strategy needed for him to have won. Sure miss these days when Boxing was still great.

I actually thought Bob Foster had a good chance with that long stiff jab and height advantage. The reception at the closed circuit venue that night was horrendous..pretty much unwatchable..not uncommon back then. These were two great fighters. Joe was just too much for a great light heavyweight. I can’t believe this was 50 years ago😬. Thanks for the upload.

Cosell was wrong at the end when he said no light heavyweight had ever beaten a heavyweight for the title. Bob Fitzsimmons accomplished that feat at 167 pounds against Gentleman Jim Corbett back in 1897.
@BrotherPatriot
@BrotherPatriot Жыл бұрын
Corbett was 184 lbs (cruiserweight today)...Fitzsimmons was 167 (super middleweight today)...with Fitzsimmons winning in the 14th with 15 scheduled. True that the lighter man won but at that time BOTH were considered a Heavyweight and a Light Heavyweight, respectively. (John L. Sullivan claimed the world heavyweight championship in 1882 under the London bare-knuckle rules, and in 1889 he defended his title against Jake Kilrain in the last heavyweight championship bare-knuckle fight in the United States.) The Queensberry rules, which were established in 1867 was where the first weight classes were established but it was some years before they fully replaced the previously established London rules. However, by the time our fight that we are talking about came along, they were established. As mentioned, both Corbett & Fitzsimmons were considered a "Heavyweight".
