British referee Harry Gibbs, the only official, scored it 59¼ points for Frazier and 58½ for Bugner. Under the British scoring system, the winner of a round receives 5 points and the loser 4¾.
Frazier put Bugner down with a left hook in a neutral corner in the tenth round.
Joe Frazier won his first fight tonight since losing his heavyweight championship last January. But his 12‐round decision over Joe Bugner may have done more for his opponent's reputation than for his.
Working from a glowering rage before the, fight and charging relentlessly, Frazier managed to knock down his taller, heavier oponent for count of 9 in the 10th round.
However, Bugner came up off his knees to stagger Frazier in the same round and close his left eye. The final minutes passed with the estimated crowd of 14,000 cheering Bugner as they used to cheer Henry Cooper, their heroic and oftenbloodied contender of the previous generation.
With the new champion, George Foreman, sitting a few feet below him, there was no doubt Frazier wanted to put Bugner away.

Bugner was one tough cookie, Frazier hit him pretty good for 12 rounds and he was still up on his toes, not many could take that kind of punishment.

I was at this fight at Earls Court in London, and was well placed to see the knockdown. If Joe Frazier had landed the second left hook which he had ready, Joe Bugner would have been seriously hurt, and his career probably ended. Both my companion at the fight and I immediately recognised the sportsmanship of a great fighter. Being an avid boxing fan, the raw aggression of Frazier was obvious on TV. It was only seeing him box live when you experienced the smooth aggression and co-ordination of his style. It was a privilege to watch him box. Bonus of the night was meeting George Foreman, in his massive Texas cowboy hat!! A marvellous night of sport, watching this video brings back those happy memories.

Checkout Joe Bugner vs Miguel "Angel" Paez, and Ralph Charles vs Jose Napoles for the world welterweight championship. I was at those fights in London, and they are on KZbin. Bugner fought competently, was a genuine challenge and got hit by some fuckin mack truck, soul crushing lefts to the body and chin and got up from a left to the jawbone that puts 90% of heavyweights into a coma and still fought aggressively afterward, respect Joe Bugner.

Joe Bugner never got his due in my view. He had a long career and took a lot of flack in the UK simply because he dethroned the much loved Henry Cooper. After moving to Australia he again climbed the ranks and as a quite old fighter took on the much younger Frank Bruno only to lose via KO. When one considers that Bugner fought Ali twice and gave Frazier all he could handle in this fight. Bugner seemed to always put up a good fight. Ali was so accurate with his punches in their 2nd fight but Bugner boxed beautifully. A real quality fight to watch. Bugner took to acting in Australia and seems to always play the bouncer type role which he well suited to do. Hungarian, English, Australian? Either way a great fighter!

Bugner was an incredible contender but the competition he faced was the best heavyweight roster ever and barred him from any world titles. And unfortunately that's how the public liked to keep it since he was vilified for that win over Cooper. But beyond that he is a living example of the talent of the Golden era, how he dominated the Australian scene in his mid 40s not dissimilar to what Foreman was doing at the same time. These guys could come out of retirement and bash guys who hadn't even been born during their prime, a testament to their legend.

I don't think Bugner was dis-liked because of his surprise decision over Henry Cooper, but more so, because of his subsequent loss against Jack Bodell, an old timer whom Cooper had beaten twice plus subsequent losses to almost every decent guys he ever fought, albeit, with some decent performances.

Joe's trainer - Yancey "Yank" Durham passed away about a month after this fight. The great Eddie Futch was there to pick up the reins but Frazier always said he felt most comfortable with Yank in his corner.

That was a pretty good fight. I've only ever seen short highlights. I've always thought Joe Bugner was a little underrated. Really good footwork. Pretty fast hands. Not always accurate though. Descent defence, and a solid bloke. A nice all round boxer. 👍

Joe fought out of my hometown St Ives Cambridgeshire trained by Andy Smith Joe always called him Mr Smith when Joe used to fight the town was buzzing with anticipation weeks before the event. Joe was a lot lot better than people gave him credit for there’s no way Henry Cooper could’ve went the distance with Joe Frazier. . But Joe didn’t have the killer instinct neither did Muhammad Ali but being better Joe Bugner he didn’t have to have it. That’s what makes Ali’s career so incredible.

Joe Frazier should have ended the fight earlier when he got Bugner with that left hook in the corner. Bugner was definitely out. All it took was one more hook, but he held back. What an empathetic sportsman. Another one will live Bugner fully dropped and cold. The commentator didn't even talk about this quality of Frazier's. Yet some people ask why the referee raised Frazier's hand at end of the fight.

Bugner is a tough fuckin guy. Its not an easy thing to back Frazier against the ropes and he did it several times and won some rounds in this fight. Even as Frazier took complete command later in the fight Bugner was still landing solid shots while Frazier was coming in. He also lasted the fulll distance. Something that only 3 other men did. He very likely would of stopped him if he kept unloading after the left hook that dropped him. As aggressive and dangerous as Frazier was there were several incidents in his career that were similar to that. The second Quarry fight comes to mind and I do believe he may have taken it easy on George Scrap Iron Johnson who was a sparring parter of Joes although there is no film of that fight to confirm that claim.

A lot of these fights were broadcast over radio in these days. On closed circuit television and on public radio so the commentators of that time would have to audibly portray the action to people who were listening radio. Your comment is valid but it was different times. I hope this helps

Musburger was never a radio guy to my knowledge, but started in print media. and he was short sighted journalist at that. His reaction to John Carlos' and Tommie Smith's political statement at the 1968 Olympics speaks volumes about his perspective and vantage point, making himself an expert in areas he knows nothing about, including how to analyze a boxing match - that's evidenced from his meaningless blurby lack of analysis in the above fight.

Most boxers are born with power some boxers have to work hard in the gym to work on there power bugner was a boxer so his style was speed he could bang as his record suggests but he didn't have fraziers natural power in both hands that was the only difference in this fight.i personally think bugner fought the wrong fight more movement around the ring working off his jab would have set the big shot up especially with bugners reach advantage. instead he stood toe to toe cracking fight but a good boxer should always beat a good brawler if they get on them toes

Early in Bugner's career, if my memory correct, an opponent did die after fighting Bugner. Bugner is a tall guy who had the skills that would have made him a world champion nowadays. Frazier was frightening even during sparring sessions. No mercy.

Joe Bugner was a city boy. Sure he threw a lot of punches,..but he was weak minded compared to Johansson or Eckland. There is a reason why people become more aggressive and less athletic as they grow older.

It's a could style, since you can see his way of pressuring opponents repeated in modern fighters like Canlo Alvarez, but he just couldn't adapt to other ways of fighting when other ways were needed. I mean, he just charged in head first on Foreman of all people. Sure, you can take a shot or two from Bugner on the way in, but not Foreman.

It's the way he fought Josh. Frazier knew one way to fight and that was it. Remember Foreman was a huge man compared to Frazier.

Fighters don't really change their fighting styles. It's called muscle memory. Joe wasn't physically great but he was the toughest SOB of all time. He was physically outgunned by everyone but they didn't have his heart.

Yes, I agree completely. Frazier-Foreman 1 was the most clear example of styles make fights but I find that the second fight really highlights how Frazier could have won against Foreman. Imagine 1973 Frazier (pre-Manila, better eyesight, more power) when he first fought Foreman in the sunshine showdown but with his 1976 stick and move style, especially if he hadn't bloated himself to 215 (or even worse, 225 in the second fight) and kept to his prime weight of 205? I feel like had he just managed to get into those later rounds like Ali did (bearing in mind, to be fair, he didn't have the reach or size of Ali), he would have become a greater and greater threat to Foreman. And I say that with every respect to Big George, who I consider boxing's hardest hitter (I see Earnie Shavers and Liston as very close to him) and one of the top 5 greatest heavyweights to ever do it. But we clearly saw in this 2nd fight how Frazier got to round 5 (fair enough, not a later round by any means but far better than round 2 he and Norton reached and his performance was far more even here than in 73) with Foreman when he was right at the point of retirement, was weaker, was older, was post war in Manila. I genuinely believe younger, closer to prime Frazier, had he been at his prime weight, but approached it with the stick and move style that bit closer to Ali in Rumble (although Big George was instructed not to pull and push, if he had, this style would have seen Frazier more out of the way and unavailable rather than his typical phone booth style, although even in reflex there's the odd instance where Foreman does still manage to push and pull Frazier here) he showed in this 2nd fight, that he could have got the job done. He clearly had the chin (got up 6 times after being knocked down 6 times by boxing's hardest hitter), had the power in his left hook (although Big George is admittedly one of boxing's greatest iron chinned heroes) and had that unbelievable cardio that, if he'd just made it to the later rounds with the kind of change in style that wasn't absolutely tailor made to leave him purely vulnerable to Big George (as seen in this rematch), I truly think Smoking Joe would have had a chance get his man. Love them both though.
