I live with Joe Louis son . not the not the son he had with his first wife . but the son he and his 3rd wife Martha and Joe Louis raised, who I officially consider my forever family .I currently live with son of Joe Louis junior owner of Joe Louis southern kitchen restaurant located in Detroit Michigan. Didnt know how much his father held such an amazing title and had such a big impact on society(when i first met him ) till he told me , to look up some documentarys on KZbin about his father and to really do some research about it . and boy I could definitely assure you how impressed and feel inspired and touched by his fathers story. You dont come across a famous boxer son that held the champion title for almost 20 years, advocated for the army as far as investing inn supplies and equipment to best serve our lovely country during hardship war that was going on . he was the first African American that was basically allowed to participate in golf and made it accessible for other African Americans to compete in golf tornamets which is also very inspiring . also to mention he first came out in the 30s -50s , I was born in 1999 and let me tell you, alot of my generation lacks the history within sports , life events, not understanding the hardship hurt and pain and lacking the knowledge of what was goimg on during that time in America . Society was so different back then you could tell by the authenticity of one who was raised during this error rather verses someone raised during this time error ) this generation lacks authenticity, growth in knowledge. And I could go down the list forever and hell u could even include the music on top of everything my generation lacks. My roommate, Joe Louis BarrowJr. Has mentioned to me one day to watch this documentary and wow I am impressed with how his father was such a role model and inspiration during the time he boxed and held that title and made other opportunities possible for him , "in a white mans world". . Joe Louis story shoould be taught in school as far as being bought up durim black history month and much to be mentioned and told about his story to this generation of children . I know he has a street named after him in Manhattan . but there should be a holidat for Joe Louis to honor his legendary legacy. maybe then kids now a days ; they could Learn somethin. But anyways shout out to my roommate Joe Louis Jr . and I advise everyone to go check out his restaurant in Detroit. They serve delicious food and its almost impossible to get in always have to make a prior reservation. Lucky for me, I know the owner of Joe Louis southern kitchen located in Detroit and is in charge of his father Joe Louis estate. Not much is mentioned about his son ( my roommate ) but he sure is making his come up and making his way up to success, a lot of opportunities is opening up in his life for success currently. He has a great amount of perseverance and drive to his goals in life Joe Louis Barrow Jr. ( Joe Louis son) my roommate , Is such an outgoing individual always business oriented, always ten steps away from his original plan and overall a great father and friend of mine and I will always appreciate the fact of meeting Joe Louis Jr. And learn about his father's legacy and trials and tribulations he had to face during his time living . I can't say it enough , like I've mentioned earlier ,Joe Lois story should be told, preached, taught , or celebrated, his story is very inspirational .

Joe Louis was the most powerful and fastest punching heavyweight boxer in ring history. His great hand speed, especially in combination, was awesome to behold. He had a powerful jab, threw every punch perfectly and with wasteless accuracy. His right cross, thrown short and straight, was sheer dynamite. The "Brown Bomber" never ducked anyone as his record 25 title defenses attests to. Of those 25 successful defenses, 21 were won by knockout, 17 of those were ten counts! 5 in the first round! He also knocked out six men who held the Heavyweight Championship of the World. From 1934 to 1949, when he first retired as champion, his record was 60-1 with 51 knockouts. He held the Heavyweight Championship for a record of nearly 12 years.

You echo the words of Emmanuel Steward who knew a little about boxing. He said that Louis was the greatest champion. But because Louis had trouble with fighters who could move (example as a 169 pound light heavyweight Billy Conn almost beat him), Steward stated that Ali was the better fighter. Any doubts about this watch the first Conn/Louis fight. But yes Louis because of the times earned the status given to him.

Truth Hitman I was exaggerating, as the statement itself is ludicrous. I believe he would have gotten to Ali. People don't realize Louis moved only as fast as he needed to. By making Ali take 2 steps to his 1 he would have gotten to him in the late rounds IMO. Tyson at his best just might have been the best with his power, speed, and upper body movement he was vey hard to hit. His career is another matter. I think George would have been nothing more than a punching bag for Louis, even though George wasn't the slow lumbering fighter many make him out to be, Louis was just devastating when a fighter came into him, and George would have done just that. Louis doesn't get the credit he deserves for facing hard experienced fighters and being the great boxer puncher that he was. A good analogy is James Toney a middleweight who ended up fighting and winning in the heavyweight division just on the experience he acquired over the years. That's what Louis's opponents had that Louis doesn't get credit for, except by the professionals. Have a good day.

And Lewis reach was an 85, so that gives you an idea on the kind of leverage liston who was 6'0 could get on his punches. His jab came at a funny angle where it looked like it was at its full reach but then it would extend about another 6 inches, and it knocked out alot of guys. Louis used the jab to set up left hooks, and when he fought taller guys he would tire them out by picking off all their shots until there hands got tired, he would also beat their bodies on the inside.

Louis technical skill was so great that he could often work his way in against a taller guy through other methods like blocking, parrying, bobbing and weaving, and once he got inside he prefer to through hooks and the right straight because they have more power and can knock the guy out better than a jab. Further louis had a reach of about 76, there was no benefit to trying to jab a taller guy with a longer arm when he could use footwork and duck the jab and ko the guy with a left hook

Joe Louis is the best boxer for one reason above all others --- 1. He could beat you any way that was possible. Joe Louis took people the distance multiple times and won decisions. Joe Louis had several first round KO's Joe Louis had several middle round KO's Joe Louis had a few late round KO's (13th round and later). Joe Louis could out point you, out slug you, out hand-speed you, and KO your as.s. There are very few heavyweight champs that have done all that. Muhammad Ali mostly wore people out. Ali did not really have a Knockout punch, and mostly had KO's with the right hand. Joe Louis Ko'ed people with either hand, and with very fast combinations that alternated head and body shots in rapid succession. I challenge anyone to watch the Joe Louis Vs. Walcott Knockout from their second fight, or the second Schmeling Fight. Joe was a very intelligent fighter that lost to those two guys the first time , then adjusted his strategy and came back to win the second time. The closest thing to Joe Louis that we ever saw after him was the 1985-1988 Mike Tyson. Now imagine if Tyson had his head on straight and had maintained his skill for 15 years like Louis did?

Yes the Ali vs Louis match up is every boxing's analyst wet dream. It really depends, if Lewis can use his technical skills to corner Ali and hit him with more than a glancing blow, or would Ali hit a prime Louis with one of those backwards straight rights like he did to sonny liston. Joe Louis was the first black champion to open the doors for other black boxers [unlike jack johnson, Archie Moore himself said that Johnson left a terrible burden of black boxers after him]. Joe Louis also opened the doors for blacks in golf & he was part of the cause that gave blacks better treatment in the military. The greatest heavyweight of all time from my point of view for more ways than one but with all due respect they are being dismissive of Joe Walcott by saying joe louis should've beaten him no problem. Walcott was an all time great as well with much better footwork than Louis and a much slicker defense. I honestly don't think any version of Louis beats him without trouble. A slick defense and great boxing is why he had so much trouble with Billy Conn and Walcott was just as good of a boxer as Conn but with better footwork and he was a good 20lbs heavier and stronger than conn.

Louis was known for throwing very hard hooks to the head, could knock you out with either hook, left or right, or with a straight right. Those were his main ko punches, but he is considered to be the best technical boxer in all of boxing and the textbook on boxing, so although he can knock you out with pretty much any punch, it just depends on what was best in the particular situation. Ie. if he fought a smaller guy he could knock them out when they were bobbing with an uppercut, tall =right

Louis was to a large extent a great technical boxer who made opponents miss or make techical mistakes,if he fought a large man, he'd let him throw the jab and counter with the left hook or a straight right. The jab is not normally a knockout punch in boxing, it is normally used to create openings or distract an opponent from other punches

mmm, joe was not dancing around the ring but his hands were fast moving and known to be quiet explosive when he was trying to knock you out. It is really a tactic, you go in see a slow moving guy, and then he explodes on you with a fist to the chin. You make a good point. To be completely honest, I sided with Liston with reluctance. I'm a pragmatic guy, I look at the evidence at hand and judge to the best of my ability, while leaving favoritism at the door. Don't get me wrong, Joe is in the top 2 of all-time heavyweight boxers. I just have difficulty seeing him KO Liston. and when I said 'slow' I meant foot speed, not hand speed.

Whites loved Louis, they rooted for him in all of the fights where he was an underdog, people like underdogs regardless of race. Ali & Johnson flaunted their wealth and mocked their opponents, people don't like that from fighters or people. Whites cheered for Frazier who was blacker than Ali. Race doesn't matter, Cooper was whipping prime Ali ass if it wasn't for his easily cut face, in the first fight Alis corner cheated, it should have been counted as a ko.

Joe Louis had 1 of the fastest combinations in boxing history, he wasn't slow, he was patient. Research Zora Folley, his style was like Louis [patient], he didn't waste punches, he also out-boxed a prime Ali for the first few rounds [until he gassed out because he was old]. Not wasting punches & being slow are too very different things. A

Many fighters have always had fast foot speed but Robinson was the first to be great white using his fast feet. Ali & later SRL styles themselves out of SRR. They thought that to be great you had to be like them. Fast feet is good for avoiding sluggers power. Many sluggers, like Foreman, tend to have power but not to great boxing know-how. They also miss allot. None of todays greatest boxers have fast feet. It's not very efficient, you can only get away with it with great athleticism.

I watched the carnera fight and I have his book. He actually doesn't have that kind of powerful jab. His stance lends it self to be able to hit a guy with powerful hooks. Liston was shorter, weighed more and was clearly more muscular than probably any boxer until Foreman or Tyson. Liston had a 15 inch fist, largest fist in pro boxing history, he had an 84' reach and likely suffered from stunted growth, he had to have a special boxing glove made for his large hands. Lennox Lewis was 6'5 1/2

From what I have seen, I think Liston could take about everything Joe could throw at him. Joe was also a slow moving guy, and I just don't see him getting inside Liston's range long enough to do the damage he wants. Even if he did, I think Liston wouldn't be fazed that much(Just watch his fights with Cleavland Williams). Liston would probably keep him at bay with his jab, and back up when Joe tried to advance on him. If Joe douse get inside Liston will smash him with his hooks.

With all due respect to you and Joe, I am think Liston would be to much for him. Liston has the intimidation going for him, a long reach, a strong jab, and solid technical skill. Many people think he was just a slow-moving, dumb brute that always went forward. Liston was actually pretty smart in the ring. He could back off when he needed to, and STILL hit you with his jab. He could go the full 15 rounds, take a lot of abuse, and still keep up a good defense.
